Reception - Madelyn, Kurt - Saturday afternoon

Kurt seeks out Madelyn for a chat and a dance for the first time since the disastrous talk in her office. Weddings make people happy.

The ceremony was over and the reception in full swing. Kurt had spent most of the intervening time talking to Moira, Nathan and people from the clinic, but now conversation had died down as the guests turned to eating and dancing. Madelyn, he saw, was sitting with two of the clinic staff and on an impulse, he approached them.

Hank had wandered off with Dr Connors, no doubt discussing some of the more esoteric points of mutant powers. Ordinarily she would have joined him, but she figured Hank could do with the male doctor bonding, given the way he was outnumbered by women at the mansion. She looked up as Kurt approached, a brief expression of surprise crossing her face before it was eclipsed by the welcoming smile. Excusing herself, she rose and met him half way, unconsciously smoothing the dark blue velvet of her dress as she did.

"Having a good time?" she asked, perhaps a little awkwardly. She hadn't spoken to, or even seen that much of Kurt since that horrible night in her office.

He nodded, with an honest smile and only a slight hint of the undeniable - and fleeting, he hoped - awkwardness. "Very much so. It is always a pleasure to see good friends so happy."

She raised her eyebrow a little at that - it could be taken any number of ways, but she wasn't going to presume. "Especially after everything Moira and Nathan have been through - it's wonderful to see them so happy." Her face softened as she glanced across to where the happy couple were laughing together over some joke. "It's almost hard to believe we've gotten to this point, really. I thought they'd end up eloping in self-defence."

Kurt chuckled. "I think if they had, Lorna would have hunted them down and brought them back, rather than let them deny her the chance to organise a wedding."

"Well, if you'd suggested it to her the middle of last week, I think she would have packed their bags for them," Madelyn said with a laugh. Certainly the green-haired chef was relaxing now, but earlier... Not to say she didn't enjoy the stress on some level, 'though.

"Also possible", he agreed lightly. "But she would have regretted it later."

"Probably," Madelyn said. "I know we would have - food like that is a once in a lifetime thing."

He nodded, lapsing into more comfortable silence for a few moments, then looked up at her. "Would you like to dance, Madelyn? As friends?"

There was only a briefest fraction of a second before a brilliant smile crossed her face, relieved and happy all at once. "I'd really like that, Kurt."

He smiled back and held out a hand. "Shall we, then?"
