Friday afternoon on the road: Jamie, Kitty, and Lockheed
After visiting Akron, Ohio's Mechanical Barbie and the Band of Many Kens (second from the bottom), Jamie and Kitty return to the car to find that not everyone is happy with the whole "road trip" concept.
Jamie grinned at Kitty on his way back to the car, craning his neck to make sure 'Yana was out of earshot. "You'll notice I was good, I didn't make any remarks about Limbo Queen Barbie the whole time we were in there."
Kitty almost choked trying to cover the snort of laughter. "Oooh, you're mean. And very good for not doing so, cause I'm fond of you and don't want to see you dead."
Lockheed was curled up in the backseat of the car, and he'd be sulking if he could find the energy. It was HOT. Hot and stuffy and he wanted to GO OUT. Everybody else got to go out. Even The 'Yana, who was clearly insane, was allowed to go out, and he had to STAY IN THE CAR. And they rolled the windows down a little so he could breath, but not enough he could get out and it was STILL hot.
"I just about ruptured something keeping it in this long, let me tell you . . ." Jamie glanced through the rear window as he unlocked the car and winced slightly. "Aaaand, it looks like it's time for full blast on the AC when we get going again."
Kitty peered in, and quickly opened the door as soon as the lock clicked, getting some fresh air to circulate through the car. "Lockheed, you ok? Sorry we were so long..."
The rush of air gave him more energy, but all he did was lift his head up to glare at The Boy as he climbed into the car. He ignored Kitty entirely, being unable to actually be mad at her, but not at all happy.
"Hey," Jamie protested, starting the engine and cranking the AC up to full. "If it was up to me I'd let you wander around, little guy, I always hated being stuck in the car when I was little. We just don't have dragons here, y'know?" He glanced at Kitty. "Do we still have any water or pop or something in the cooler? That stuff might still be at least a little cooler than the air in here . . ."
Kitty was already digging through the mostly melted ice until she found a bottle of water. "Come on, Lockheed," she said, finding one of the cups that were small enough for his paws, "you knew it'd have to be like this before we left. You won't have to hide from Uncle Harvey, of course, but strangers... They wouldn't take well to you. It would be dangerous." She handed him the cup, stung by the way he continued to ignore her, just burying his snout in the water. "Lockheed..."
"You don't want somebody trying to take you away from Kitty, do you?" Jamie asked. "That's what they'd try, y'know. C'mon, don't be mad at her, she's just trying to keep you safe." Jamie's hand found Kitty's and squeezed, then he arched a challenging eyebrow at the little dragon. "Besides, I'm the one with the big steel sports car that turns into an oven when the sun's out. I could've painted it white, y'know, and it'd reflect more heat that way, but noo, I had to go with dark green. I'm horrible."
Lockheed snorted, the water at the bottom of the cup he couldn't quite reach splashing a little bit. Like he was going to argue with the fact that The Boy was horrible. But the air conditioner was rapidly cooling him off, and The Horrible Boy was holding Kitty's hand, probably just trying to provoke him. Well fine, be that way, he thought at The Boy. The thought lasted about two seconds before he was clambering his way into the front seat to curl up on Kitty's lap, wrapping his tail around her wrist to tug at her hand.
Kitty let go of Jamie's hand to reach over and scritch the little dragon behind his wings. "It'll be a while before our next stop, too. And we'll find somewhere in the shade to park, even if it means we have to walk farther to the rest stop or whatever."
Jamie nodded. "Absolutely. And if you swear you won't splash all over the upholstery, I think I have a bucket in the trunk I could stick in the back seat with some ice in it, if we're gonna be as long as we were here. I should've thought of that before--didn't realize how hot it was getting."
Lockheed wasn't sure he was prepared to make any concessions to The Boy yet, but privately he agreed to leave the upholstery alone. Even if it did smell like tasty. For now, though, he just latched a claw into Kitty's shirt, unwilling to let her go yet.
"Maybe offer again later?" Kitty suggested, petting the little dragon. "Lockheed, you're being silly, you know." There wasn't any censure in her voice, though.
Jamie snickered softly, pulling out onto the highway. "Silly?" he said in highly mock-offended tones. "Dragons are never silly. Everyone else is just uncooperative." He shook his head. "Seriously, though, I sympathize with the little guy. I hate being too hot."
Lockheed grunbled softly. He was being mocked and pitied. Dratted confusing boy.
"Well, it's cooler now," Kitty said. "You're fine, Lockheed."
"Plenty of opportunity to stretch the ol' wings when we get there," Jamie assured the dragon. "Uncle Harvey said he got marooned on about the most deserted stretch of the Ohio Turnpike he's ever seen." He grinned at Kitty. "Good thing you're impossible to stay mad at."
Lockheed grumbled again, squirming about to find a good spot for a nap, and Kitty laughed. "Ten will get you twenty that translated to, 'Yeah, but you're not'."
"I know better to bet against the lady who holds the book. Wanna sound out 'Yana and Alison about hitting Dairy Queen next time we stop?"
"Sure," Kitty said, pulling out her cell and hitting the number for Illyana. "And hey, if you want a change of scenery, Lockheed, next time you can ride with them."
Jamie snickered. "Or hey, Lockheed, I think 'Yana's gonna be riding shotgun next time it's my turn to drive, you could ride with the two of us. Wouldn't that be fun?"
Already ninety percent asleep, Lockheed just mumbled a little. "Mrr."
Jamie grinned at Kitty on his way back to the car, craning his neck to make sure 'Yana was out of earshot. "You'll notice I was good, I didn't make any remarks about Limbo Queen Barbie the whole time we were in there."
