Kurt in Germany: two vignettes
He visits his old nurse, then spends some time with the clan's children. Thanks to Ali for socking.
It really was far too long since he'd been home, Kurt was coming to realize as he spent more time in the camp. He fully expected to be scolded for it, when he made his way to Rosamunda's caravan - his mother's dear friend, who had watched him and the others many times as children.
"Kurt!" Rosamunda herself was waving at him, hustling over from where she had been straightening out what appeared to be a small disagreement between some of the caravan's children. "Your mother told me that you were home," she said, reaching up to take his face between her hands and planting a kiss on each cheek. "You look thin. Have you been eating?"
Kurt laughed, leaning down so she could reach more easily. "Hello, Rosamunda. Yes, I promise I have been eating enough. How are you?"
"Busy. Always so busy. So many children these days," she said, casting a fond look at the small group she had just left as they ran off to play. "Come," she said, tugging his arm. "You are thin. Have dinner with me!"
"It is good to see the clan thriving so", Kurt said with a smile, watching the children go. He didn't resist her pulling him towards the caravan. "I would be glad to eat with you."
"Of course you would. You always appreciated my cooking," Rosamunda said with a laugh. "Even when you were tiny. You ate all your vegetables."
"Naturally", he responded lightly as they walked up the steps. "How could I not, when the meals were so good?"
"Flatterer! Do you talk to the women at your school like this?" Rosamunda teased, hustling him inside. "How many dozens of them have you charmed?"
Kurt shrugged, still keeping things light. "That depends on how you mean it. I consider all of them friends..."
She patted his arm. "I'm glad you have friends," she said, apparently relenting with the teasing. "I worry about you, so far from home."
"I know. But really, I am fine. And I promise I will return more often."
"You will," Rosamunda said, urging him towards a seat. "Or the mountain will have to come to Mohammed, and wouldn't that be awkward..."
Kurt laughed. "I would not mind it so much, perhaps. It would not be bad, for you to see where I have been."
********************
Some of these children had been no more than babies on his last visit of any length. A few didn't remember him, even... but most did. He was memorable, after all - and he had been mobbed when he appeared in the doorway to the children's place.
He braced himself, laughing, as the first of them jumped on him. "Hello! Yes, it is nice to see you too."
"Kurt! Are you staying, Kurt!"
"Kurt! Do some of your acrobatics, Kurt!"
"I will be staying for a time, yes." He detached one of them gently from his leg. "And I will do acrobatics, but I cannot unless you let go, you know."
"But I'm just little!" the girl protested with perfect logic. "I don't weight very much!"
"This is true." He considered. "Well, perhaps I could manage something and take you with me."
She giggled happily. "I'll hold on very tight?"
"No fair! If Liza gets a ride so do I!"
"I cannot take two of you at once", he pointed out, laughing. "After Liza has had her turn, you shall have yours."
"You promise?"
"Then me, Kurt?" a third child asked eagerly.
"Then you, yes. All of you who wish it", he promised, aware that every single one of them would want a turn.
Liza immediately attached herself to him again. "But me first!"
"Yes, Liza, you first." He adjusted his grip on her, moving her to where she couldn't be hurt during his acrobatics, and began.
"WHEE!"
Kurt laughed, relaxing completely for the first time in some time, and happy. Yes, he would definitely have to make time to visit more often.
