Jubilee, Amanda - Tuesday morning

Finding herself at loose ends in New York, Amanda goes out to seek Breakfast. Her life being what it is, of course she picks the diner Jubilee works at. They have a good catch-up.

After the weeks of frantic work finding Romany, Amanda was finding the downtime of being in New York with nothing specific to do undid her in some way. She'd gotten used to routines, having tasks, aims... funny how it went. So it was that she was awake bright and early, sitting on the couch in the hotel room they'd booked, flicking through channels on the television idly. Nothing on. With a frustrated noise she flicked the TV off again and dropped the remote on the coffee table as she got up. It was a nice day and the city was calling.

Once she was outside, Amanda realised this was a good idea. New York was like London - they both had the same buzz, the sensation of power that somehow felt right. It gave her a sense of purpose, even when she didn't really have one right now. Abruptly her stomach growled and she realised she hadn't eaten yet. Hmm, time for breakfast. She remembered seeing a diner or two down the street nearby...

Jubilee impaled her newest order onto the spike hanging from the alcove that led to the kitchen and pressed the button once. "Eggs over easy, crispy bacon and a coke!" she called out before turning to head back out to her set of tables.

It took her a second to recognise the person sitting by the window.

"Mandy?" she asked, surprised to see the other girl.

"Jubes?" Amanda blinked and then broke out in a broad grin. Sometimes the coincidences of her life coughed up something good. "Bloody hell, what're you doing here?" Then she took in the uniform. "You're working here?"

Jubilee grinned but rolled her eyes at the question. "Mandy, my hat has a cow on it. Even with what Betsy says about my fashion sense, there's no way I'd be caught dead in this if it wasn't part of the torture that is retail work. What are you doin' in New York? Last I heard, you were still in New Orleans."

Amanda poked her tongue out at Jubilee. "With you, you never know. And I'm here on holiday, I s'pose you could call it. Remy and Pete had business here and I tagged along... 'S been a weird month." She rolled her eyes slightly. "Before that I was at Muir. Um... sort of a powers issue." Leaving it for Jubilee to ask more if she wanted, she asked a question of her own. "So what's with the waitressing gig? I thought you were at the police academy or something?"

"Give me a sec, I'll just see if I can get a break and we can talk more." Jubilee replied, looking over her shoulder at one of the other waitresses. "What did you want to eat, by the by? I'll get them cookin' on that too."

She had a lot of questions, and answers to give. They hadn't seen each other in awhile. It would be easier to do both those things if she wasn't worried about people nagging at her for things like drinks, and food.

Glancing over the menu, Amanda made her mind up quickly. "Give us the basic breakfast," she said, pointing at the 'eggs, toast and bacon' special. "And if you could find me a decent cup of tea I'd bless your name to Jeff the God of Spoons."

"Basic breakfast coming right up. I'll see what Rube can do about the tea." Jubilee replied, heading back into the kitchen.

After a few minutes she came back, holding a tea pot and two mugs, sans the apron she'd been wearing.

"He'll have Sally bring your breakfast out when it's done. Now, what's this about Muir? Enquiring minds, Dude." Jubilee replied, setting the pot and one of the mugs in front of Amanda.

"Jeff smiles upon you," Amanda said with a grin, making herself wait before pouring the tea. It needed to steep. "As for Muir... you know my powers were burned out by what happened at the Hellfire Club, yeah?"

"Yeah, I remember that." Jubilee replied, sitting down in a chair across from Amanda and eyeing her. She'd wait till Amanda had poured herself a cup before getting her own, it was only polite. "Not so burnt out now, I take it?"

"Not exactly. But they're not the same as they were, either. And they made a right pain of themselves coming back." Amanda picked up a teaspoon, fiddling with it since she couldn't smoke in here. "One part normal manifestation, one part me being a stubborn bitch about them coming back. I nearly made my brain explode. Again. I was at Muir for a couple of months recovering and getting used to things."

"You know, one of these days I'm going to have to get you one of those little bracelets. Only, instead of 'What would Jesus do', it'll have 'What would a sane person do'?" Jubilee replied, winking to take away the sting. "Either that or I'm going to have wrap you in cotton wool. So, as to the other thing I completely sidestepped. I'm still doing the cop thing. Just working mornings to afford rent on the student place David and I have. He gets to work night shifts as a security guard, since I totally need my beauty sleep and I think I'd get arrested trying to use my powers doing guard duty."

"Show me a sane person and I'll copy 'em," Amanda said playfully, finally giving in and pouring the tea. One for her and one for Jubilee. "And I'm fine now. Still working out what it is I'm absorbing but we'll get there. And with the magic gone for good, there's no worries about me blowing myself up again, so you can keep the plastic bubble." Sipping at her tea, she sighed. "That's the stuff. Only things I really miss from home, decent tea and decent beer. So you and David are still going strong, then?"

Jubilee grinned, as she started spooning way more sugar then would have been healthy for a normal girl into her tea. "Yeah, we've been goin' real strong. Got an apartment together so I could do the Academy training and he could go to college here as well. Been visiting the mansion every so often though, keeping in touch with people. You going to be in New York long?"

"Right now I have no bloody idea," Amanda replied with a slight shrug, spurning the sugar but adding a little milk. "A couple of weeks, I think. I sort of want to see how things pan out with whatever Pete and Remy are planning."

"Well, guess I'm going to have to show you the town then, make sure you get to see the cool bits. What would you say to dinner? David's such a better cook then I am." Jubilee replied, taking a sip of her tea.

"Considering when you cook you set yourself on fire, that's not hard, mate." Amanda was teasing. "But yeah, that'd be nice. I'm catching up with Angelo tomorrow, but I'm really at a bit of a loose end at the moment. Strange after being so busy that last six months. I finished school, did I tell you? Did the rest of my courses down in New Orleans."

"Dude, that's so cool. We have totally be out of touch for way too long. Definitely making this a celebatory dinner then. Complete with cake!" Jubilee replied, grinning and reaching over to give Amanda a brief hug in congratulations.

"Now, who can say no to celebratory cake?" Amanda laughed, hugging back before Jubilee plopped back in her seat. "Here's to us, huh?" she said, raising her tea mug. "Out there living the normal life. And people said we'd blow each other to bits before we graduated."

Jubilee raised her mug and clinked it against Amanda's, grin evident on her face. "Either that or the mansion itself. Do you remember how much Cain yelled at us for the front room?"

"I think I'm still partly deaf in one ear," Amanda said, grimacing theatrically. Her breakfast arrived and she thanked Sally as she set it down in front of her. "Cheers. And yeah, I thought we'd never get that mess fixed."

"We did though. Did some fine work on it too. So, you heard from any of the others yet?" Jubilee asked, taking a sip of her tea and sitting back with a contented sigh.

"I saw Doug and Marie-Ange back in England," Amanda said, through a mouthful of egg and toast. She was starved, now she thought about it. "Pete had a patch of bother with Rom going missing, so we ended up helping out. Even got to break someone's nose," she added with a faint amount of pride. See! Not useless! "I dropped Ange an email, we're catching up soon."

"Cool. I gotta go back this weekend, mostly just for a visit. Works out well, since David usually spends the weekend with his college buddies. Which makes me happy, since all that sittin' around goin' on and on about philosophy and the state of the government in this country bores me to tears. Would much rather be out doin' something, then talkin' about it." Jubilee said, and then blushed slightly. "Can you tell that's somethin' David and I totally don't see eye to eye on? He's all about the politics. I kinda prefer the black and white stuff. Least I know what I'm fightin' against when the bad guy is the one lobbing crap at me."

"Mate, you're allowed to disagree with your boyfriend sometimes, whatever you might get from the lovely dovey types at Xavier's," Amanda said with a snort. "Tho' I'm probably the last person you should get relationship advice from."

"I know, just still in the honeymoon period, I guess. Even if it's been awhile. It's weird gettin' used to living with a guy. Soo many things I had no idea about. Even knowing the guys at the mansion."

Amanda choked on a piece of bacon. After the coughing had subsided, she managed: "Mate, the blokes at the mansion are in no way something you should be using as an example. Don't get me wrong, the school's a good place, but seriously? The people there are kind of fucked up."

"Well, I wasn't gonna say it, right out loud like that, but yeah." Jubilee replied, snickering. "Just knowin' David for awhile, it was a bit of a surprise how normal he is. No neurosis to be seen."

"Well, that's me, saying what most polite people don't." Amanda was unapologetic. "There's a whole world of people out there who aren't insane - it's good you're seeing it."

"Well, insane is alright. Long as you're not wanting to date the person, anyhow. And doesn't that just sound strange?" Jubilee replied, looking back over her shoulder at the time. "And I've gotta go, breaks aren't long here. I'll see you tonight?"

"Yeah, sure thing. Meet you here?"

"With bells on." Jubilee replied, standing up and walking back through the door into the kitchen.

Amanda grinned. Typical Jubilee, always to the point and never one for drawing things out. Besides, she probably only got a short break. Feeling much better about things, the Brit turned her attention to her breakfast. Things were looking up.
