[Marie and Julio] - Wednesday afteroon

Marie comes to check on Julio, and Julio finally asks about something that's been bothering him

Marie peered around the doorway to the sunroom, smiling as she noticed who was inside. It was a beautiful day outside and the sunlight streaming through the windows brightened the room. "Hey," she said as she walked inside. "Ah've been meaning to check on you."

Julio lay on his back on the windowseat, sort of reading, but more in a comfortable doze by the window. He was so relaxed he didn't even jump when he heard Marie, just lowered the book and turned to regard the older girl by the door. "I am fine," he said, somewhat sleepily.

"Ah'm glad to hear that." She walked over to settle on a chair near the window, folding her legs under her. "We've had a bunch of new arrivals, so it must be nice not to be the new kid anymore."

Julio allowed himself a sleepy grin. "Yes, Angel and I were discussing that. It is nice to not be the only one overwhelmed by this place." It also didn't hurt that they were all girls. He eased himself into a sitting position, no need to be rude.

"Yeah, that's true. Better to be overwhelmed in pairs and groups than alone." Grinning, she raised an eyebrow at him. "Just so long as y'all don't start planning any more sherbert and Jello wars," she teased.

"I promise," Julio said with a grin. "Forge has not let me live down the fact that we were supposed to be aiming for Kyle." Julio considered himself a gentleman, he would never hit anyone else with jello or ice cream. Because there was always still pudding and oatmeal...

Marie was glad that Jamie had taught her a few tricks before he and Kitty had left for California. She had a feeling she was going to need them before the end of the year. "Uh huh…sure you were," she said with a wink. "But it has been a rather boring summer around here since you arrived."

Julio thought for a moment, before he dog-eared the page of the book he was reading and sat it down. "Yes," he said, "If you ignore the headmaster getting kidnapped." It was something that had been bothering him all summer, was the repeated assurances that everyone was fine, that he was safe. But reading the journals told him otherwise. It was why he volunteered to go to New York. He'd finally come to the conclusion that he simply wouldn't be safe anywhere, so why bother hiding?

Wincing, the look on Marie's face grew pained. "It is not something to ignore." She twisted the edge of on her gloves as she thought about what she wanted to say next. "The first important thing is that we found and retrieved him." She clasped her hands in her lap, before her movements could start to fray her gloves. "We keep it as safe as we can around here, but this is why it's so important that we know where y'all are at all times."

"See, I do not like that, because that makes me feel like a prisoner." Julio sat upright, and clasped his hands in his lap. "I am sorry to bring this up, but it worries me with the new students coming in." How can you keep us safe if you can't even keep yourselves safe?

"It worries me too," she said softly, before realizing that was she needed to do was to reassure Julio. He was a student, not a colleague. "What happened with Mr. Summers was unusual in how it occurred and regardless of what the journals seem to imply is not an every week occurrence." Her face and voice were both serious. "The new students often come in because we rescue them from situations they were in. Situations that arose before they arrived at the school, as you well know," she pointed out.

Julio sighed. He knew that. He also knew that he had the unwanted bragging right of having one of the worst stories for coming in. He had been surprised that all Angel did was set her mother's car on fire. "It just disturbs me, how the other students, the ones who have been here longer? Do not get upset at things like this."

Marie's sigh echoed the boy's. "Some of that is them getting used to what it is some of us do in our spare time." She waved a hand in the direction of the basketball court. "We go out and face things that people only see in their nightmare. And at the same time we do our best to keep the team safe and more importantly the students here. Sometimes our best isn't as good as Ah'd like it to be…but Ah like to think it's better than the alternative."

The younger boy rubbed his nose thoughtfully. "I guess you are right," he said quietly. "There is not much else you can do, no?"

"No," she said, barely masking the sadness in her voice. "But we can keep trying to do better than we have."

"Good." Julio gave Marie a little smile. "We students appreciate that."

Marie smiled back, a little weakly. "Ah'm glad you felt comfortable enough to say something, y' know? Ah can understand why you'd be worried and well, that's part of what Ah'm here for…to listen to your concerns." She didn't mention that she felt a special connection and responsibility specifically for Julio.

Julio decided not to mention that he didn't exactly trust the older members of the staff at the moment. It was...nice not to be condescended to. The silence became a little awkward, so Julio cleared his throat. "So otherwise, I am doing well."

Standing up, Marie brushed her leg with a gloved hand. "Well, Ah'll let you get back to your book. Though it's such a pretty day, it'd be a shame to spend it all inside."

"I was outside earlier," Julio replied. "Before it got too hot." He really wished classes would start. He was about to go mental from boredom.

"Hmm…" Marie mused, pursing her lips. "Ah'm headed into town to pick up some supplies for school startin', you can come if you just want somethin' to do.

A muscle in Julio's jaw twitched. He didn't mind shopping, but he knew enough not to do it in the company of girls. An hour could easily turn into an entire afternoon. "Thank you," he said amiably. "But I have to say no. I want to finish my book." That he had read at least ten times by now.

Marie smiled at him before turning and walking to the door. Turning around, she shrugged, a small twinkle in her eye. "Guess Ah'll just have to finish picking out the P.E. equipment myself. Ah'm thinking of replacing soccer with bowling."

The younger boy snorted. "And you will have some very displeased people if you do." But he smiled when he said it.

Marie laughed as she headed out of the sunroom. She had a feeling Julio was going to be ok. He wasn't too scared to question things that bothered him and he was still able to laugh and smile; considering how he'd arrived, that was a good sign. Though she had a feeling that if something didn't happen to occupy his interests soon, he'd find his way into mischief.

Julio sighed when Marie left the room and put his book down. The talk had left him feeling restless. He stretched and then got up. He would go change and then probably go for a run or something to wind down. There was never any shortage of trails around the mansion, after all.
