Voodoo Child: The Song of Erzulie - Research
Wanda and Illyana work on finding out what ritual the stones might be used for.
A glass of water was carefully set in front of Illyana as Wanda walked past, an open book in her hand. They were up to their eyebrows in reading material, jotted down phone conversations and print outs; once again, she found themselves with more under the 'No' column than the 'Yes' and it was frustrating.
Illyana managed to break from her reading long enough to say, "Thanks," and to sigh, crossing another resource off a rapidly-dwindling list. Turning to the next page, she only managed to get two or three paragraphs in before throwing it (not without a certain amount of force) into the pile next to her. "I don't even want to know why that's been immortalized in print," she muttered. She glanced up.
"Someone once thought that they were very clever," Wanda replied tiredly, perching on a half-empty chair. She tossed the book she was holding into the pile as well, not caring when it tumbled onto the floor. "But most of what we have been finding has been decidedly unclever. Oh for the ability to go back in time and smack these people." Randomly, she dug for another book and pulled it out, grunting under the weight.
A stack of papers nearly slid off her lap, and the blonde girl had to fumble with them before getting them under control. "I'm not convinced it would have helped." She pushed her ponytail over her shoulder and flipped through the papers rapidly. "Crap, useless, worse, totally irrelevant unless you're actually trying to mate with a slug demon... nothing." The papers went to the pile too, where they floated down to the floor. She'd have to clean them up eventually, but until then they could just stay there. She reached up to rub one eye tiredly.
She glanced up and grimaced as she flipped through the book in her hands. The book itself was old and worn, like every other book in the room. "I doubt I want to know if there actually is a...slug...hello." Reaching over, Wanda snapped on the light on the table next to her to help. The text was small and smudged in places but she still sucked in a mouthful of air all the same as she reread it. "I found something," she said, surging out of her chair.
With the exception of the water glass and book Illyana had been reading, the older woman swept everything else off the small table in front of her before putting the codex she had in her hands down. "Third paragraph," she said, finger going to it. "I think this is describing the ritual. But part of it's missing--this is the last page and apparently this has a pair. We need to find it."
It took a few minutes filtering through piles and piles of what had largely turned out to be garbage before Illyana pulled up a text buried deep under a teetering stack of old leatherbound volumes (sending said stack crashing to the floor). They certainly looked the same; and yes. There it was. "This is the other one," Illyana said, holding it open to the proper page. "It's oh." Reading further, her voice went flat. "I'm not sure I'd count this as good luck, actually." She slid it to Wanda over the table. "Start at the third paragraph."
Leaning over Illyana's shoulder, she scanned the section before setting back on her heels. Wanda stared at the far wall, face bleak while she processed the information they just found. "Fuck. Fuck." A deep breath and then she was scooping up the volumne she'd found in her arms. "Come on," she said, nodding towards the door as the expression on her face hardened, "We need to show this to Pete and Remy as fast as we can get it to them."
"I figured." Illyana¹s own expression had closed off as she waited for Wanda to read the passage; picking up the other volume, gestured for the brunette to lead the way. Maybe all the pessimism was paying off; it wasn¹t worse than she¹d expected, after all. About par for the course, really.
