Week in the life: Bishop and Jubilee log
Bishop and Jubilee train, and discuss a few things as they do so
Jubilee spotted Bishop in the crowd from her perch on an apartment roof, and smiled grimly as she launched herself off, catching the bar of a fire escape as her feet met the mesh side. Not stopping, she twisted and allowed herself to drop down, clutching at a window ledge for a moment before twisting again and catching a hold of the next section of fire escape.
It didn't take her long to reach street level in this way, and she moved out of the alleyway and into the crowded streets of New York with the mild, somewhat distracted expression of any city dweller.
Unfortunately for Bishop, Jubilee didn't stand out as much as he did. He had much more experience watching for people, however; even making it look like he was oblivious while he did. She'd been getting much better though.
People used to tell him that if you taught someone everything you knew that then you'd be expendable. In the past that might have been the case but now he figured that it might save his life. He was looking forward to the day Jubilee was as good as he was.
Jubilee fell in beside Bishop, having noticed as she was about to touch his shoulder that he'd tagged her already. "So, how close did I get this time?"
"Very close. It shouldn't be but a few more times until you have it." Bishop looked down to her and offered a friendly smile. "Then you'll be my officially trained apprentice ninja and we'll take the world by storm."
"First we take Manhattan?" Jubilee asked, watching the crowd as she walked. It was lunchtime and clusters of people were moving quickly from their offices to places to eat.
"Would we even want it?" He laughed teasingly. "I'd go straight for some tropical island and never look back."
Bishop saw the people and the lunch but he didn't say anything. Though they had a decent professional relationship, Jubilee still disliked police officers (and Bishop by proxy) as far as he knew.
"Wanda tells me tropical islands have their own problems." Jubilee noted, stopping as the walk signal on a set of traffic lights turned from 'walk' to 'don't walk'. "You don't strike me as the type to walk away from problems though. You enjoying working for Emma?"
"I like the freedom of it. We're on the same page with most things and she hired me as an expert so that keeps people from thinking they can look in on me or tell me how to do things." Bishop looked down to Jubilee then back across the street. "Career wise it's perfect."
"Personal wise?" Jubilee asked, pushing her hands into her pockets as they walked. She'd turn off soon and they'd begin again, but she was content to just talk for the moment.
"There's not much to tell there. I work, I go home. Occasionally I meet with Emma or Scott. Rarely I run across someone new, talk with them once, and we're done. With the small number of people I've met, I'm surprised I'm apparently known about at the mansion." Bishop glanced down, "You should hook your thumbs in your pockets instead of pushing them in. If someone gets the drop on you then your hands could be caught up and useless."
Jubilee pulled her hands out of her pockets without comment, hooking her thumbs in as he'd told her. "I wouldn't be that surprised. The mansion's like the biggest bunch of gossips you've ever met. Sure, the really secret stuff doesn't get batted about, but anyone new? Yeah, they'd probably have had your social security number and an entire write up on you within a matter of hours. It's scary sometimes just how smart those kids are. You kind of hope that they don't get up to some of the stuff we got up to when we lived there. Well, when I lived there anyhow."
"What did you get in to?" Bishop laughed a bit and looked down to her. He'd hooked her now, she'd have to back out and shuffle the question off or give him dirt. Either way Bishop liked it.
She didn't stop walking, and instead seemed to slow even further, settling into the comfortable, not going anywhere important gait they'd taken up.
"You know Mandy? Well, I fucked her boyfriend, and almost got her and the rest of my classmates killed when some bastard who I thought I was bein' smart in contacting used my blood to summon a demon. Then there was Pete's old buddies who decided we were an easy target, of course. First guy I ever killed, I still get the nightmares. I made a lot of mistakes, and hurt a bunch of people. And you'd think that'd teach me something about the person I am now, but I still haven't figured that out either. I figure I've been the person people've wanted me to be, or the one they expected, anyhow. Or maybe just the one I thought they expected. So yeah, when I say I hope they don't, I really, really mean it."
"Yeah, I can see why you'd want things to not be like that for other people." Bishop nodded, not having much to say about the huge list of trouble she got in to. He had been in a bit himself so he didn't have any judgments about it but he didn't have any real comments either.
Jubilee smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Come on, enough of the chitchat, we've got training to do."
With that, she darted away, heading deep into the crowd and out of sight.
Bishop recognized the smile, he'd been getting the 'polite' smile most of his life and even more so when he became a cop. He wasn't under the illusion he was making friends with... anyone. He slipped back into the crowd as well, though he wasn't much able to blend in, ever.
