Jan and Karolina - Official RA Stuff
Backdated to yesterday.
Not getting a response to her e-mails, Jan goes to talk to Karolina in person. Karolina is less than overjoyed by her visit from the RA.
"So you're in. Good." Jan looked at the multicolored girl who had just opened the door for her. "Didn't get my e-mails?"
Karolina frowned and set her jaw sullenly. "No. I didn't," she lied without qualms. Her body was blocking the narrow opening she'd made when opening the door, not that that would be terribly effective against the RA should she choose to shrink down and fly in. "What were they about?"
"I suppose you didn't get the messages on your phones, both of them, and didn't see the missed calls left by multiple staff members, did you?" Jan eyed the barely open door. "Are you going to let me in or what?"
"I wasn't planning on it." Karolina answered, keeping her breathing short and shallow. Deep breaths would let the tears sneak up on her again and she was absolutely not going to give Jan the satisfaction. "And no, I didn't. I did get lectures in all of my classes though and I saw my public flaying on the journals and I know that I can never do anything right around here ever so if you don't mind, I'll just assume you're going to say the same thing and go back to my homework."
"That doesn't make any sense," Jan replied. "You didn't skip classes... why would you get lectures in class? And yeah, Forge is an asshole. He was ticked, sure, and a bunch of people were worried about you. So, why'd you do it? Why didn't you just tell someone you needed to go somewhere, and why'd you leave your school phone? I mean, there are plenty of places on-campus where you can go to be alone, and if you want to go off-campus instead, sure. This isn't a prison, really. I would driven you somewhere and not talked to you and sat away from you if you'd wanted to be off-campus but alone, if you'd just asked."
"Because everyone here feels like they've got a right to tell me how stupid I am, that's why." She wasn't going away. Karolina hadn't thought she'd be that lucky anyway but it was still annoying. "I had my real phone and my friends knew I was gone. If I'd been in trouble, I'd have called. I just didn't have my electronic leash."
"Well, if someone acts stupid, people are probably going to tell them they're stupid," Jan pointed out, shrugging. "I guess I'm just kind of confused here. You make this big deal about not being safe, and then you go off and do something that's not safe. And you can't blame anyone for that. If something had happened, it wouldn't have had anything to do with the school or the X-Men or weird psycho bad guys who want to rule Manhattan. Stuff happens no matter where you live or who you know."
Karolina rolled her eyes. Of course she knew. She'd grown up with cameras outside the house, security at the door, publicists who dictated when and where and how. And she'd been one of the lucky ones for that. Her life hadn't been nearly as hounded and hunted as so many of her parents' friends' kids had suffered. There wasn't a countdown site for her 18th birthday. Her school had had firm policies about press and visitors. Karolina hadn't been actively exploited until she came here though. No one she knew had been attacked and murdered. No one kidnapped and tortured. No one told her she was stupid for rejecting violence in all forms. "And what if someone had tried something? Nori had her phone and it didn't magically save her. Jay and Dani and those guys were carrying their phones and that didn't help them. All it did was mean that the X-Men could be too late. It's not safe. But not being safe was better than staying here."
Jan snorted. "Yeah, no one's saying the phone is a magic safety thing. It just lets us know where you are, or where you were, if something happens. Look, I don't want to be saying this stuff any more than you want to hear it. But I'm an RA here, the only RA here at the moment, and you did break the rules, even if you think the rules are stupid. Again, there's no problem with you going off-campus, as long as you follow the rules. That's not what you did, though. So, blah blah blah etcetera etcetera, next time you feel the need to get away from here please do so while following the rules, but that's not going to be for a while except for school stuff and parent stuff, and that's as in they actually come to get you or give official permission, not that there's a premiere or whatever and you just say you can go."
"Like I said, I had my phone and if I'd needed someone, I would have called the police who could have helped." Inside Karolina was shaking, her stomach knotting so hard she thought she was going to throw up. Outwardly, there was no sign of it, even her rainbow aura stayed softly swirling and golden instead of flaring like it usually did when she was upset. "Are you done now? Can I go back to my homework?"
"Sure. All done." Jan knew she was getting nowhere with Karolina; the girl wasn't even pretending to be remorseful. "Oh yeah, one more thing," she said quickly before Karolina could shut the door in her face. "The e-mails and texts and voice messages you say you never recieved? A lot of those were just 'Where are you?' and 'I'm worried about you', not angry mad screaming things. Just in case you happen to get them late, you don't have to think they're all full of harsh words. And you know where to find me in case you want to actually talk about what's bothering you instead of ranting and getting yourself and other people all upset . Anyway, have fun with your homework."
Jan turned away and Karolina's face crumpled. She didn't bother to reply to that last slap. Karolina shut the door quickly and raced to her bedroom. She hated this place. So very much.
