Dori & Callie

When Callie finds Monkey Joe sulking in their room, it prompts a discussion with Doreen about her upcoming trip.

"Okay freshly popped peanut butter popcorn, a ton of movies, and... why is Monkey Joe sulking in the corner?" Callie stopped, stared at the squirrel then at her roommate before venturing into the room. She set the bowl down on her desk, grabbed a handful of popcorn and nestled down a few feet away from the very sad looking squirrel. Perhaps a little peanut butter popcorn would cheer him up, as it was obvious from his expressive face that he was incredibly sad. She looked up at the younger girl and asked, "Is he okay?"

“He wants to go too,” Doreen said, giving her friend a pat on the head, taking a break from trying to figure out what she should bring with her as far as clothing went. “Ever since I got him, he hasn’t gone anywhere without me for more than a couple of hours.”

Callie felt as if she was missing something. She popped a piece of popcorn in her mouth and chewed as she thought about this. "I feel bad because I should know this, but where are you going?"

“Bosnia, with Yvette! I had to get my passport redone because I’ve only been out of the country once. We went skiing in the Alps one year when Dad had a really big bonus from work. It was awesome,” Doreen said the last with a dreamy sigh, “I’ve never been to Bosnia before, so I’m sure it will be interesting. But it’s supposed to be kind of dangerous too, and I don’t want him getting hurt, you know?”

Ah yes, Bosnia. That Balkan hotbed of potential violence, but of course she wouldn't tell Doreen that. Callie had been in dangerous areas of the world before, and had generally not experienced too much difficulty. As long as Doreen kept her wits about her and stayed sharp, Callie knew that her roommate would be okay. Callie smiled as she popped a few more kernels in her mouth. "I've never been to Bosnia. We went to Croatia last year, but not Bosnia," she said as she rose to fetch the popcorn. Upon returning to her space on the floor next to Doreen's bed, the bowl was placed on the bed so that the two girls could share in its sweet peanut buttery goodness.

"You'll be fine. You might want to tell Monkey Joe that not many hotels will allow pets to stay, and that I promise to take good care of him. Spoiling him with treats, and tons of time out doors."

“I did. But he’s still sad. But he knows I’ll be back. Oh, I told him I’d ask, if it okay if he sleeps with you if he gets too lonely? He sleeps with me all the time,” Doreen said. Monkey Joe had asked, being accustomed to shoulder rides and pillow sleepings.

Gulp. "Yeah that should be fine." Callie shot Doreen an uneasy smile. She wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea, but if it would help his separation she would allow it. "Do you need any help packing?"

“I think I have everything,” Doreen said, “But thank you for saying Monkey Joe can. I’m sure he won’t every night. But he’s like a cat. He needs company.”

Callie nodded. "It's no trouble at all." She glanced at the open suitcase on her roommate's bed. "Don't take this the wrong way, but do you want to borrow one of my suitcases? That one doesn't look like it'll survive the trip, no offense."

“I know it doesn’t look like much, it’s all I have,” Doreen said simply, looking at the weathered suitcase. Since it had been mangled on a return trip from skiing a couple of years ago, it hadn’t been the same.

A wide smile appeared on Callie's face as she held up a finger, indicating that Doreen should wait a moment. Without a word, she rose from her place and walked over to her bed. She knelt beside it and stuck the top half of her body under the frame. After a few moments of searched she emerged, sliding out a bright turquoise Longchamp rolling suitcase as she scooted back toward her roommate.

"Here," she declared as the suitcase was dropped on the bed. "If you're going to be a jet-setter you need to look the part. Or at least have a suitcase that you will be able to find easily and can withstand a lot of beating."

Doreen went wide-eyed, “Oh, I can’t take that…” It was so pretty.

"Dori, yes you can." Callie slid onto the bed beside her roommate. "You're going to be gone for a week. And this thing is tough, you don't have to worry about it getting beat up on the streets. Because, trust me, I've put it through worse."

"Well… I suppose if you’re sure,” Doreen said, her big suitcase was very beat up. “Thank you so much, Callie!”

"I'm completely certain!" She began to unzip her own suitcase so that Doreen could begin to pack. "You are an international traveler dear, and you have to look the part. Just don't wear any of those pouches or fanny pack and you'll be fine."

“Oh, I won’t. I’ll take very, very good care of it, I promise!” Doreen said brightly.

"I know you will Dori," Callie said with a smile. "That's why I'm loaning it to you! Now come on. Let's get you ready for your trip."

“Okay! Think I should bring some of my comics?” Doreen asked.

"Well it's a loooong flight, so probably want a lot to read. Although you really should be sleeping on the way over." Carefully, Callie began rolling up Doreen's clothes and placing them in the suitcase. "But you don't want to take too much, because you have to carry it all."

“I won’t pack too much. Just some Batman. Maybe some Birds of Prey…” Doreen said, trying to think.
