Wanda and Jake (back dated

Jake "breaks in" to Wanda's apartment with wine and chocolate to check on her mushy head.

Around 10 pm on a weeknight, one generally could find Wanda at one of a few places.

Work. The pub. With a friend - or "friend" as it might be. Or perhaps even in her own apartment with some combination there of.

It wasn't normal to find the apartment almost completely devoid of lights, noise or movement and it certainly wasn't like Wanda to be in bed already. The headache that had driven her to seek the comfort of the darkness of her room had finally receded, enough so that she allowed herself to crawl mostly out from the heavy blankets she'd pulled around herself. She had been fighting the headaches off ever since their latest job but they were starting to become annoying.

And then there was a Jake. Well, technically, there was a shuffling sound outside on the fire escape, then a scraping sound as the window was eased up, followed by a pause. And then there was a Jake, two bottles of pinot noir held precariously by their necks in one hand and a large bag of individually wrapped dark chocolates in the other. "So somehow I found myself in possession of more wine than I can possibly drink myself," he said by way of greeting, tossing her the chocolate to free up a hand before crawling through the window.

Wanda caught the bag completely by reflex as she watched Jake manage to make his way in without dropping anything. Things had been getting back to normal between the two of them slowly since he'd come back. There had been many meals shared, drinks, trips out - but they hadn't 'broken' into each others apartments since he'd left. It was that moment that Wanda realized how much she really had missed him.

"A bottle of wine that you couldn't face down?" she scoffed, only bothering enough to sit up slightly in bed. She didn't even bother with trying to find a robe - Jake had seen far more of her in his day than Wanda sitting around in a pair of boxers and tank top. "But who am I to turn down such a lovely gesture?"

"Don't let the word get out. My reputation will be ruined. Besides, what's the fun in drinking alone?" Jake declared. The entry a success, he stood in front of the window a moment, thoughtful. There was something far more familiar and comforting about crawling across fire escapes and through windows than he would have expected. "You have to try those first," he finally said, a nod toward the bag before he turned to close the window. "They claim to be Swiss, but I'm dubious."

That said, he headed toward the kitchen, where the sounds of rummaging through drawers could soon be heard. "Got an opener around here?

"I suppose I am the leading expert on what Swiss tastes like," Wanda responded cheekily, falling back into the banter that had defined them. "Check a random drawer - who knows where things end up in this place anymore?" Wanda could easily find things in the oft-times chaos of her apartment but it was sometimes hit or miss with anyone else. She reached over to switch on the light next to the bed. It was a soft light so she knew it wouldn't cause another headache.

They were going away but the progress was slow enough to drive her insane.

"Your tasting...skills are beyond question," Jake called back. Drawers opened and closed, silverware clattered, and then there was a soft voila followed by the clear sound of a bottle popping open. Again came some clatter, and then Jake was back, a bottle and two glasses in hand.

Pouring wine can be quite theatrical, when done properly, and Jake set the glasses down, filling both of them with flourish before setting the bottle aside. Now how one can bounce onto a bed without spilling even a drop of wine, the world may never know, but Jake did precisely that, landing next to Wanda then finally offering her a glass.

She couldn't help it, she broke out laughing. "Showoff," Wanda said fondly, taking a sip of the wine. It was, of course, an excellent wine and she toasted him with it. "Excellent as always, sir." Carefully, she set it down on the nightstand so she could open up the bag of chocolates that were resting in her lap. "Not that I am complaining as your company is always welcome but what brought on the sudden visit?"

Instead of responding, Jake make a good show of first swirling the wine int he glass, inhaling its scent, then finally taking a sip. "Adequate," he intoned in his stuffiest voice. "I'd give it an 87 at best." Carefully balancing the wine, he rolled over onto his side toward her, propping himself up on one elbow as he watched her progress with the bag. "It's just been too long since we've done this," he said, letting that hang a moment before adding, "Plus, figured I'd share this old family remedy for headaches. The chocolate, I mean."

"I smell a rat," Wanda said wryly as she finally got the stubborn bag to open. She had no idea why someone would go to the trouble of making chocolates hard to get into. She fished a piece out before solemnly tilting the bag in Jake's direction. Wanda wasn't sure if she was irritated with Jean-Paul - because besides a mention or two to Amanda, she had mostly dealt with them quietly. And Amanda hadn't seen them at their worst - or touched. "I'd threaten to kick him but the bastard's faster than I am. And you're right. I've missed this."

Jake stuck his hand in the bag, pulling one out. With a glass in one hand, he made do with trying to unwrap it one handed, trying to get a thumb underneath the foil. "That he is." Whether he was referring to the faster part or the bastard part, he didn't elaborate. "But don't tell him I told you. He's barely talking to me as is. And you're avoiding."

Wanda reached over and tugged just right on the corner of his chocolate and the wrapping opened up in a second. Her powers had some fun uses after all. "If I had ever been one of these, what are they called, girl scouts, I would say scouts honor on the not telling. And of course I'm avoiding." She popped a chocolate of her own in her mouth and almost groaned. Of course he'd gotten the good stuff. "I used my powers in a new, different and decidedly mentally painful way this last time," she said, eyes still closed. "My brain has been slowly patching itself back together but, well, with Chthon out of the picture - at least out of my head - there are still limits to what even I can do."

Mmm, the delicious taste of chaos. Jake took the smallest nibble of his chocolate before popping the rest in. Of course he got the good stuff. He pressed it to the roof of his mouth until it started to melt. "Did this new and painful experiment at least do what you want it to do?" he finally asked, the chocolate giving a handy excuse for time to frame the question in his mind. Not really the one he wanted to ask, but she probably knew that. They'd probably never agree on how far one should extend themselves for the team. Or, for that matter, for anyone outside that small circle of close friends. And in Jake's case, the circle for which he might risk his own well-being was very small indeed.

"Of course it did," Wanda reproached, opening one eye long enough to glare at him from it. "The consolation price was my brain turning into jelly but it did, indeed, get the job done." And, wisely, she let the unspoken bit well enough alone. She and Jake were tip toeing around enough topics as it was. Wanda slipped down a little more so she could be on Jake's level before reaching over and snagging her wine glass again. "You know how hard my head is. It will heal."

Jake reached over to mock-rap his knuckles on said hard head. "That it is," he smiled, his fingers giving her hair a fond stroke as he drew them back. "I'd ask if you're taking it easy, but I know the answer already, so I guess I'll settle for providing wine and distraction for the evening."

She snorted as she watched his fingers get lightly caught within her curls. Her hair could be considered a dangerous weapon at times - she'd lost count of how many times Jake had to untangle himself from her in the past. "Oh no, whatever shall I do," Wanda said dryly. "Wine, distraction, chocolate and you? How ever shall I survive?"

"Sounds like a deadly triumvirate of distraction to me," Jake said. His fingers caught, he took his time extracting them, instead of pulling away, he began to rub her scalp. "You really should take better care of yourself. Guess you're lucky you have me to do it for you."

"Stop and you are a dead man," Wanda groaned, head resting against the backboard so she didn't have to try and hold it up while Jake worked his magic.

"I plan to keep it up until you're well asleep," Jake said as he scooted closer. He slipped one hand around to rub the back of her neck while the other continued to massage her temple. "We'll see what we can do to get that brain patched back a bit faster."

Somehow Wanda managed to slide her glass of wine back on a flat surface before she lost complete control and spilled it over the covers. She'd been tempted with sleep before Jake had stopped by and now it was almost impossible to keep her eyes open as she let him chase the tension away. "You cheat," she murmured, reaching up a hand to touch the one on her neck briefly before dropping away.

"I know what works and I'm not afraid to use it," Jake replied, smiling down at her as he continued to work his fingers in small circular motions. "That's hardly cheating. But shh, no more talking. You just relax now."
