Log: Megan and Sarah, Thursday afternoon

Megan and Sarah study for their driver's license exam, and then a plot is hatched.

Sunlight streamed in the windows of the common room. Pixie suddenly wished she was at the mall with Sarah instead of studying, but if she didn’t want to rely on the bus to get around then she needed to pass the driver’s exam. She scratched her pink hair and forced herself to focus on the words in the booklet.

“Why do we need to know how many passengers a sixteen-year-old can drive in her car? I’m not sixteen anymore,” she complained.

It would have been much more fun to be at the mall instead of cramming for their exam, or anywhere else for that matter, but it was for the best of causes, so Sarah was forcing herself to buckle down and study. It was easier when you had someone else to help out, at least.

“What? We need to know that? That doesn’t make any sense!” Sarah sighed. So much of it didn’t seem to be making sense. She hoped those questions wouldn’t be on the exam, at least not all of them.

“Hey, want to try taking the quiz on the city DMV website? Then we can just study the sections where we missed a lot of questions,” Pixie suggested, suddenly feeling a glimmer of hope that she wouldn’t have to read the entire book after all.

“That’s a great idea, totally!” Sarah was surprised that she hadn’t thought of that before, it sounded like an awesome resource. “Narrow down what we need to focus on, because there’s a ton of stuff, totally.” Even though the test meant a lot to her and she desperately wanted to get her license, there was so much to learn and if she could cut some corners somewhere she was all for that.

“Work smarter, not harder, right?” said Pixie, though she could rarely be accused of working smarter. She bounced over to the computer and pulled up the NYDMV website. “Traffic control. That’s easy, isn’t it? Well, let’s see if we can skip that already,” she said as she scrolled down to the quiz part. ‘A regulation sign is usually what shape?’”

She laughed as she nodded to that. “Definitely, I’m all for that.” Sarah followed Pixie over to the computer, pulling a chair up beside her. “I think so. Green means go, red means stop, yellow means... caution, right?” Traffic lights weren’t too bad, really. Sarah thought about the question. “Hmm, they’re... rectangles?” That sounded right, anyway.

Pixie clicked the answer “rectangles” on the quiz. “You’ve got it! Right, ask me one. I think I know all the sign shapes and colors by now, but sometimes I get them mixed up with the signs in Wales--they’re kinda similar but not exactly. And we drive on the left side of the road instead of the right, but that’s easy to remember.”

“Ok, let’s see...” Sarah looked through the questions and found one to ask her friend. “Alright, here’s a good one... what does a flashing red traffic light mean?” It might be an easy answer for some people but the first time she’d seen it Sarah was a little surprised.

“That sounds weird to me, driving on the left, but I guess if someone learned it that way then it’d seem weird to drive on the right to them.” She hadn’t really driven at all but from riding in cars and such she was ingrained to being on the right side of the road.

“Flashing red? It’s broken! So I guess... you stop and proceed with caution, don’t you?” Pixie answered tentatively.

“That is...” Sarah paused for dramatic effect, but not for too long because she didn’t want to annoy her friend. “Correct!” She grinned, nodding in the affirmative. “Good one, Pixie! You’re gonna nail this on the first try, I just know it.” Hopefully they both would!

“Yeah! Well, honestly, I think ‘stop and proceed with caution’ is the answer to a lot of them, isn’t it? When in doubt, stop and proceed with caution.” Pixie stretched her arms and wings out wide, then settled back into the swivel chair. “I think we’re good on this section. Now, how well do we know intersections and turns?”

“That definitely makes sense, yeah.” It sounded prudent to Sarah, at any rate, even if some people were jerks and would honk at slower drivers. “Hmm, let’s see...” She started to check out that section, pausing for a second before looking up a question. “Hey, are you nervous about the road test part of it at all, by the way?” For the time being she was trying to focus on the exam but, especially given her powers, Sarah was starting to freak out a bit about actually trying to drive.

“Yeah, kinda,” Pixie admitted. “But I’m totally excited, too. I know the test is all about defensive driving, blah blah blah. But I can’t wait to really get out there and drive, right? Oh, I really want to see Drive,” she said, her thoughts drifting back to the mall and its movie theater. “I heard it has crazy driving stunts that put Need for Speed to shame!”

Sarah nodded. “I know, I’m looking forward to it a little, even though I’m nervous.” The whole point of getting their license was to be able to drive, of course, so she was excited for that part as well. “Oh wow, really? I, um... watching that would kind of be like studying, yeah? Homework and all that?” Homework with popcorn maybe?

“Yeah, it would be like studying, wouldn’t it?” Pixie closed the web browser and spun around in the chair to face her friend. “I think we got the written part down pat. It’ll be easy-peasy. Want to head to the movie theater in the mall?”

“I think that can be easily arranged!” Sarah needed no convincing whatsoever in that regard, she’d been hoping her friend would jump at the opportunity as well. Reaching up, Sarah touched the computer. “Off!” Just so there’d be no turning back, not like either of them seemed to be having second thoughts about leaving the studying behind for awhile.

“Oh, it responded to you!” Pixie was momentarily dazzled. “I never saw you use your powers before.” She gave her head a little shake, pink hair drifting in her face and then falling back into place.

“Okay, let’s go! Hey, this might be one of our last times riding the bus!”
