Kyle and Sam - Late night fast food run! (backdated to September 5)
Sam meets up with Kyle after their discussion on his journal and they head out for some fast food. They catch up as well and Sam finds out that not all is well with a certain former girlfriend of his.
Kyle'd agreed to tag along not so much out of a curiosity about whether or not he could eat fast food - he knew better, for the most part, but it made for a great excuse to catch up. That and he did really want fries, but those were pretty safe as long as he drank a lot of water to keep from getting indigestion. He was already outside waiting in the garage when Sam got there, and waved a pair of beaten-up unlaced Converse in a sort of wave. "And here I thought I was gonna make you wait. Damn cat tried to make a break for it the second I opened my door."
It was definitely a good opportunity to catch up and Sam was looking forward to it as well. He'd buried the hatchet with Kyle a long time ago but he still felt pretty guilty about what had happened, even if it was years ago now, and he wanted to see how had been since they last spoke.
He waved back, grinning at the other man as he entered the garage. "Heh, cats can be like that, yup. Hard to herd 'em." There was a lot of merit to the saying, after all. Sam grabbed the keys to one of the cars and unlocked the doors so they could get in. "So, how've you been?" He started up the car and put on his seat belt, looking over at Kyle as he did so and waiting for him to do the same before heading out.
"Not bad. You know, the usual like, stuff. College, team stuff, trying not to freak out that I'm gonna graduate in the spring." Kyle didn't sound too freaked out as he got comfortable in the car and stretched out in the seat with the shoes under his legs. "Not looking forward to actually having to get a job where they make me wear shoes though."
Sam nodded while keeping his eyes on the road, navigating out of the garage and onto the road. "Ah, yeah, same old same old huh? How goes the team stuff?" He'd been meaning to check in with the Professor and other X-Men, and probably should soon. Sam let out a long whistle at hearing Kyle would soon be graduating. "In the spring huh? Wow." That made him feel a little bit older somehow. He reflexively turned on the radio while driving, searching for a country channel as he did so. Sorry Kyle! "Maybe you'll find a job that's a little more, uh, flexible with that?"
"Well, if I end up teaching here yeah, but we're down to what, eight kids and half of 'em know me already." Kyle explained. "I'm just not gonna put all my eggs in that basket, you know?" He shrugged. "Team stuff is okay, mostly. Uh, lesee. What'd you miss. Nick came back, with amnesia so he thinks his name is John.. Oh. Uh, crap. Vanessa's kinda missing, that's probably important." Which was awk-ward because Vee was Sam's ex and that was just made of awkward.
"Yeah, I guess. Maybe there'll be some more students then, who knows? Good to look into other options, though, of course." It was always good to have a backup plan, after all. "What? Poor Nick, that sucks, and-" The car may have swerved a little at the mention of Vanessa being missing. Not a lot, just a little. One hundred million percent awkward, to be accurate, and Sam sure hadn't intentionally sought her out upon his return or actively asked about her, but he had no idea she'd been missing either. As awkward as their relationship may have been and may always be, to put it mildly, he still cared about her. "What? Seriously? For how long?"
"Uh, like a month?" Kyle did the mental math. When had he seen that post on the team community. "Warren said something about it in like August." He shifted his attention between Sam's driving and the road and Sam himself. "Man, nobody else told you? Aw, crap."
The initial shock had passed and his driving was alright again. Sam just shook his head a little. "No, but that makes sense. I mean, you know... there's a lot of history there, bad history, thanks to me." He paused, told himself to stop beating himself up, shrugged and then continued. "I didn't go lookin' for her or askin' about her and I didn't expect anyone to give me the low down on her, y'know?" He was sure that everyone involved was doing everything they possibly could to track her down, of course, so there was no need to worry he told himself. And yet. "I'm sure she's alright, if anyone could ever look after themselves Vanessa can." That much was definitely true.
He gave Kyle a weak grin. "Sorry about that, didn't mean to react like that." Of course Sam knew he'd have heard something about Vanessa sooner rather than later, or would've run into her, but he definitely hadn't been expecting that.
"Naw, dude, it's cool. We're not dead, and I mean, if someone just told me outta the blue that like, I dunno, Clarice was missing or something I'd probably be weirded out too." Kyle's posture returned to a more relaxed state, he'd tensed up when the car swerved. "They're looking for her, but I don't know a whole lot. Doc Jean'd know, or Warren."
Sam listened, not taking his eyes off of the road again this time while Kyle spoke. He nodded at the mention of Jean and Warren, he'd have to talk to one or both of them soon and see if there was anything he could do to help. "I'm sure they're doing their best, and they'll find her soon too, I know." If there was anything he could do to help speed that up, however, he'd more than gladly offer up his services.
"Hey maybe, they find her, there needs to be a rescue and you get to go in all blast field a'blazin and dude, best "I'm sorry I was an idiot" apology ever." A prime example of Kyle's ability to cope with stress - make stupid jokes. "Pretty sure she has to be civil to you if you rescue her. It's like a law." Kyle leaned back in his seat, arms behind his head.
Sam wasn't too sure of that at all. Maybe she'd only give him one black eye instead of two? He chuckled nonetheless, shaking his head a little. "I wouldn't bet on that, but still, hope they find her soon regardless." Sitting in silence for a few seconds, he tried to think of something else to say. Thankfully they were approaching the McDonald's parking lot, and just the sight of those golden arches woke his hunger, making his stomach growl. "Oops, heh. Good thing we're here, huh?"
"Eh, if I can get along with Jay, you can get along with Vee when she gets back." Kyle was convinced of this, clearly. "You know what's messed up? I eat this stuff like once every other year and I swear I don't know why I even want it because I know it's gonna make me sick, but it's like I get it in my head that I really need it."
"We'll see, I guess." He hoped that Kyle was right, he really didn't want things to be any more difficult than they already were. "Heh, I know, right? Sometimes you just gotta answer the craving, yeah." Sam parked the car and turned off the ignition. "Sorry if I put it into your head, though." He'd feel bad if Kyle got sick just because of him and his mentioning it on the journals.
"Nah, it's all good. Sometimes you just gotta tell your DNA to get over itself. At least I can't get a little burger and beer gut, right?" Kyle said with a grin. "And hey, I can eat BBQ chips now, so gut misery pays off."
