Genosha - Step by Step: Heading to the Safe House from the Streets

John and Sam head for the safe house from the edge of the Citadel.

The streets of Hammer Bay were pretty sparsely populated at this time of night, but the Magistrate patrols were increasing in frequency with the news of the rescue attempt on the prison cells spreading throughout the Citadel, and knowledge that a few of the attackers had gotten away. All manner of the Magistrates were out now- Defense Forces and the elite Genoshan Task Forces in addition to the regular patrols of Civil Forces. They were pouring out of the Citadel in a steady stream, dispersing onto boats to monitor the bay or into the city to locate the escaping prisoners and their rescuers.

With such a massive swarm of personnel on the hunt for them and any other of their fellow mutants, they had to be extra careful as they made their way to the safehouse. They had been lucky so far as they made their way from the edge of the Citadel and now they were making headway into the city itself, where the safehouse was located. If his navigational skills were right they were only a few blocks away from it, though with the increase in patrols it would likely be the toughest few blocks to traverse.

Collar turned up high to try and block his face in as inconspicuous manner as he could, Sam turned to John. "I think it's just up ahead, up two more streets and then over one." He glanced behind them to see if they'd picked up a tail on the way but couldn't see one if there was one.

"You think?" John was glad for the fact that it was dark and they had been able to avoid getting caught, but the closer they got to the city, the harder it was to stay hidden in the shadows. "Best be sure, man." From where he stood in the alleyway and to the right, John could see four armed men standing about a hundred meters away from them. To the left, the street looked empty and that was exactly where they needed to go, but heading in that direction meant exposing themselves to the enemy. "Time out." He slipped a cigarette between his lips and lighted it. "What? I'm blending in. Think about it. What kind of a fucking idiot would smoke a cigarette if he was on the run, right? So unless you got some other brilliant idea on how we can dodge 'em, I say we try our luck." They couldn't afford to just sit here and hope the men decide to leave and patrol some other area because it didn't seem likely, and since neither one of them had the ability to climb walls, traveling by rooftop was sadly out of the question.

"Mmm, yeah, good call." His eyes followed John's and also picked up on the four men off to the right. It really did make things a lot tougher than he would've liked. Sam just rolled his eyes but it was true, there was a certain element of hiding in plain sight to the idea he supposed. "Well, there's not a heck of a lot of other options for us, I reckon. We just might have..." Looking around, Sam noticed there was a restaurant across the street from them, with one of its windows open. Inside there was a little lamp lit on the empty table, with no patrons around, and what appeared to be a fire detector not too far away from it on the nearest wall. "...a potential distraction, maybe?" He nudged John and tilted his head in that direction, wondering if it was a viable option or not.

"Reasons why you're the X-Man. Genius idea." John sucked in his cigarette as he focused on the flame in the lamp and smirked when it exploded. The curtains caught on fire and that was that. He could have made a show of it, but they didn't exactly want anyone to be alerted to the fact that this was anything but a regular accident. The moment the alarm was triggered, the armed men started moving toward the restaurant. When a few of the workers started piling out of the front door, John signaled for Sam to make a move. They had their distraction. Hopefully it was enough to get them to the next street.

Managing a slight grin for a fraction of the second for the first time since things went south, Sam nodded and stepped back as John did his thing. It worked better than he'd hoped it would have and he followed John once the other man signaled him to do so. It looked like the rest of the street was clear in terms of any other guards, the first lucky break they'd had in a while. Checking the geography again, Sam nodded to another alleyway that'd bring them out to the street on which the safehouse was located. "Just up ahead there, should be the nondescript brown house on the corner."
