Log: Megan and Sarah, Friday afternoon (backdated)
Backdated to June 29. Sarah packs up the rest of her belongings - more than she had anticipated - with the help of her former roommate Megan, talking about summer plans and family as they do so.
It was surprising to Sarah just how much stuff she owned. Packing was one way to really find out how much of a packrat a person was and, in her preparations to move from her room with Megan into a suite with her sister, she was finding out how much of one she was. The short answer was a much bigger one than she would've guessed, especially considering she had really only been back to the school for a little over a year.
Wiping her brow, she turned around and looked over at Megan. "Man, I never would've thought I had this much stuff to move." Thankfully there were lots of boxes around to put her things into; she just didn't think she'd need as many as she apparently did.
Megan looked up from where she was helping to pack Sarah's books and DVD's. "Oh, hey, I never got to watch this movie. Can I borrow it and give it back to you later? I can't believe how fast this year has gone." She pulled the DVD case back out of the box and waved it at Sarah.
Sarah looked over to see what movie Megan was holding up. It was a copy of Bladerunner, a movie she'd seen several times, so she had no problem with her friend holding onto it for another while longer. "Sure, no problem at all! It really has gone by quickly, hasn't it?" Sometimes it seemed to Sarah that she'd only just arrived there for the second time a short while ago, but so much had happened since then. Some good, some bad, but a lot just the same. "I think you'll really like it, it's a classic."
"Awesome, thanks! Plus, this gives me an excuse to visit you in your new suite. Not that we can't still hang out, right?"
"Of course we can, and we will!" Sarah grinned at Megan. "And you don't need an excuse to visit either, just stop by anytime. I'll be coming to see you too, promise." She really liked Megan and still wanted to spend time with her friend even if she'd be moving in with her sister. "I think you'll like Jess too, I bet you'll get along well."
"Okay, cool! That would be really fun to meet her." Megan beamed back at Sarah. She set Bladerunner aside and fit the rest of the movies in the box, closing the flaps. She paused for a second, thinking of her own sister. "So were you pretty close then, sisters, growing up?"
"Mmmhmm, pretty close, yeah." They'd had their own personalities and everything but for the most part they had gotten along well. Like any other set of siblings there were the odd fights and arguments but in Sarah's mind they were pretty close. And a good chunk of Sarah's time had been spent catching up with Jessie on the phone at least once a week since they'd been separated.
"That's cool. My sister and I were pretty close, too, I think. I mean, we were only a few years apart in age so we went to the same schools and stuff. And I think since our parents were like, kinda old when they had us, they didn't really understand us. We just did our own thing and it would drive mum crazy sometimes." Her smile turned bittersweet. She hadn't actually had time to think about Molly in a while.
Sarah could definitely relate to the whole 'parents just don't understand' bit, which was especially aggravated when you were a mutant on top of going through the normal life of a teenager. "That's what kids do, though, I'm sure your mother probably did the same thing when she was younger, yeah?" She smiled a little, looking over at Megan. "When was the last time you guys hung out, you and your sister, I mean?"
"Well, I was 14 years old. Wow, it's been a long time - four years. And then when I tried to find her in London, that was even three years ago. I guess I tried to move on since then, even though I still think we'll meet again. She wouldn't just cut ties for no reason." Megan shook her head in disbelief. "But anyway, I'm not trying to be a downer. I really am happy for you. I have been really lucky here to meet people with all different kinds of families. It gives me... hope."
Four years was a long time indeed. Sarah couldn't even fathom having to go that long without seeing Jessie; it'd been hard enough only getting to see her over Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays as it was, but four years? It hit her how lucky she was to have that kind of contact with her sister. "No, you're not a downer, promise. You're right, you will meet her again, I know it." She followed up her words by going over and giving Megan a big hug.
"Thanks Sarah," said Megan as she hugged her friend back. "I really needed that. Hey, now that we're technically done with school, what are you going to do? Will you and your sister continue your studies?"
"Of course." She pulled back and smiled at her friend. "Well, I'm kinda taking a break from school right now, especially after everything that just happened. I'm still helping out at XFI though, which I'll keep doing." She loved her job and as long as they'd have her Sarah would stay on there. "How about you, do you have any plans?"
"That's cool. I kind of just want to take the summer off. Hang out, watch movies, go to punk shows. Haha... or maybe do something slightly productive like get a part-time job. I was looking at some art jobs, but they also want someone who's awesome at computers. Maybe you could beam some of your technopathic powers in my brain?"
Sarah chuckled at that. "I don't know if I could do that, but I could definitely show you a few tricks sometime if you'd like." Before her powers had manifested she'd been interested in computers and the internet already, so she had some knowledge she could impart to her friend if she wanted her to do so.
"Awesome! I learned to use Photoshop and Illustrator in my art classes, but I am so bad with computers themselves. There's an animation studio that needs people to help the animators with random stuff and watch over the servers when they're rendering. I don't know anything about that kind of stuff but it would be awesome to work at an animation studio. Oh hey, does your sister have computer powers too?"
"Oh, that sounds pretty neat. I know a little about that kind of stuff, I can show you what I do know sometime." If it'd help her friend gain a job then she'd definitely pass on whatever knowledge she could to the other girl. "She does, yeah, but not like mine. Hers are different, she can... I'm not sure how to put it, I guess, but she sees her own future sometimes?"
"Oh that's right. When I saw her journal post, I was really confused until I read some of the comments. That is pretty cool. I think I would feel... comforted, that no matter what was going on, at least there would always be a different moment in the future. Nothing could feel like the end of the world, right? I haven't gotten to talk to her in person yet but I can't wait to meet her. Oh, but I won't be rude and ask too many questions about her powers if that bothers her." Megan's wings were buzzing and she was beginning to talk faster and faster. She smiled and took a calming breath.
"Yeah, that's a pretty good way to look at it, I think." Sarah smiled at Megan, nodding. "You'll meet her soon enough, I'm sure, she's kinda hard to miss." She chuckled, thinking about how her and Jessie were pretty different in that regard. "Don't worry about it, Megan, Jess isn't usually that hard to get along with. And if she is, just tell me and I'll put her in her place." She said the last bit with a wink, laughing again.
Megan giggled at that. It was hard to imagine Sarah being stern with anyone. "And after I have a job I'll have more money to do stuff, too."
It really would be difficult for her to do so, but she'd make an effort for Megan's sake. "That'll be good too, yeah." That made her think about her job with XFI, which she wanted to get back into again once she was feeling better. Sarah loved the job and she didn't want to waste the ample opportunity summer gave her to work there, not to mention this fall since she hadn't actually done anything about school, whoops.
"Uh, how are we going to get all this stuff to your new suite, Sarah?" Megan asked suddenly, looking around at their work.
"Oh, well, I..." She looked around at all the things they'd packed, then rubbed her chin. "...guess I'll have to make multiple trips. Or ask for some help!" Sarah grinned, not having thought about that. There were lots of strong, willing men around, after all, or a teleporter maybe, or something.
"Hehe, this is where super strength comes in handy. Or strong guys," Megan added, catching Sarah's sly expression.
"Exactly! Or women!" She was reasonably sure she could convince Layla to give them a hand, after all. Not that she had super strength but more hands made for light work or something like that she figured. "But yeah, I think we're just about done!" The packing was the hardest part, and it seemed like that was pretty much finished now.
Megan sat down on a box of books. "Maybe we should move them after a little break." She stood up again, wings buzzing. "Oh, I know - let's go break for some ice cream! Maybe talk a couple of our friends into going with. Then, we can finish by moving all this stuff!" It was super hot, and that more than anything was making her fatigued.
"That, my friend, is a fantastic idea, let's do it!" Ice cream was never a bad idea, after all, especially on a hot day, and then they could finish off the moving process with the sugar high that'd come from cooling off with some sweet treats.
It was surprising to Sarah just how much stuff she owned. Packing was one way to really find out how much of a packrat a person was and, in her preparations to move from her room with Megan into a suite with her sister, she was finding out how much of one she was.
