Jean and Scott: Accidental Remodeling (Backdated)

Jean is woken up after Scott blows a hole through the roof after forgetting to put his ruby sunglasses back on in the middle of the night.

The best part of the summer vacation was the lack of any need to get out of bed early. There was always training, but Scott had made sure there was nothing on either his or Jean's schedule. They didn't get enough time to just lie in bed and relax, he mused as he reached up to rub at his eyes, knocking off his sunglasses to reach them.

Ever since Marius had regrown his eyes they'd been extra careful but there didn't seem to be any problems with his eyes. He was better than ever, he noted, as he stretched lazily in the sunlight as he opened his eyes to stare at the ceiling. Only not, he realized belatedly, as a flash of red and a crash greeted him.

We're under attack was Jean's first thought as Scott's panic shot through the link and the sky fell down, yanking her out of her sleep. Drawing in a startled breath, she shot out her hands, reflexively keeping the chunks of debris from the ceiling from falling on top of them with a telekinetic shield by inches.

"Scott?! What's going on?"

"It's happening again," Scott groaned sitting up and clutching his head. He was unmindful of the frozen debris as he felt around to find his glasses, keeping his eyes screwed tightly shut. "I just opened my eyes and," he gestured up at the ceiling, "It just went," he pointed up at the ceiling wordlessly.

It was like being a teenager again, not daring to open his eyes for fear of what might happen. "I..I think something might have gone wrong."

For lack of a better place to put it, Jean shifted the small pile of debris away from them and rested it on the ground. The light turned on, and she eyed the ceiling to make sure there wasn't any more bits and pieces ready to fall down on them.

"No," she said gently, resting her hand on his arm as the sunglasses came to rest at the base of his fingertips.

"No, Love. I think....it's just back to normal. Or at least, how it was before. The original damage that effected the control centers in your brain...I couldn't fix that. Too much risk."

Scott lifted the sunglasses off the ground turning them over and over in his hands as his fingers traced the familiar outline of his sunglasses, "For a moment, I really really thought that I was past that. I've been able to control them for years, I didn't think that this would be any different." Scott sighed and slipped his glasses on, "Looks like I'm just back to where I started."

Jean sat down on the bed beside him, hand still wrapped around his arm like a lifeline. "I'm beginning to think maybe the loss of your eye dulled your abilities somewhat, causing you to absorb less solar energy and making it easier to manage. Regaining your other eye caused you to store too much energy and your body, not used to absorbing that much, was forced to compensate to release the energy. It's not you. And even if it is...we'll get through it. Just like before."

"So back to square two then," Scott noted offering Jean a sad smile as he leaned back in the bed and pushed the sunglasses up with a finger. "I guess I'm just going to have to be careful now, at least until I get used to this aren't I?" he asked with a shake of his head. His eyes widened as he caught sight of the roof, "Umm, wow. So feel like sleeping under the stars tonight?"

Rubbing her forehead, Jean glanced up and laughed. You could see the moon from this angle. "Yeah," she said after a few moments. "Sorry, I'm letting people know were aren't being invaded for the 50th time. The crash woke most of the people on the floor below us up." She paused at the hole again, then smirked.

"What do you think about putting a skylight there? Fortified, of course."

Scott slid down in the bed looking up through the hole in the roof at the stars twinkling above them. "It does add a certain something to the room," he allowed with a wry smile, "And we are in the attic might as well make the most of it. Besides if the mansion is ever attacked by ninjas, we'd have an easy escape route."

"I have to be amused by the fact that we plan our remodeling around strategic evacuation areas in the event of a crisis...otherwise I'd just be shaking my head," Jean mused, telekinetically brushing off any remaining debris from the bed. She rested her head against his chest, stroking his stomach.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

Scott took his time answering, a hand idly playing with a lock of Jean's hair, "I'm ok," he assured her, "It was just...kinda a shock, and you know seeing a hole blasted in the middle of the roof didn't really help with that," he noted wryly.

"It feels as if I'm back where I started but at the same time I know I'm not, that it's just a stumble not a fall back."

Jean closed her eyes as she listened to his heartbeat. It seemed like they both had a bit of a reset when it came to their abilities, him with his optic blasts, she with her telepathy. But he helped her through her troubles and she would do the same for him.

"Exactly. And perhaps, who knows? You might learn something new this time."

Scott leaned back against the pillow the feeling of Jean lying against his head and breathing a soothing presence as he looked up at the stars visible through the new skylight "We never stop learning," he agreed, "I think I could find a use for a new trick or two."

Smiling softly, Jean continued to stroke his chest. She felt sleepy again, despite the momentary jostling. It was not the first powers mishap, and it wouldn't be the last.

Just another night at Xaviers.
