Angel and Rachel (Backdated)
Rachel and Angel meet at the Danger Room and catch up. Backdated to May 14
Angel rolled her shoulders as she walked out of the locker room, groaning. Do something challenging, her brain had said, put yourself through the ringer, it insisted, it'll be fun.
She just wanted a massage now.
Except someone decided to choose that moment to walk right smack into her, only to stumble backwards with a loud curse as a telekinetic shield instinctively snapped into existence between them.
Startled eyes met Angel's and widened to comic proportions.
"Uh. Hi? Sorry. I wasn't paying attention. (Kinda distracted)."
"Whoa!" Angel caught herself before she stumbled, blinking owlishly as she took in the woman standing before her. "Rachel?" She said before she stopped to think.Well, that was stupid. If this was Frankeberry Rachel she was going to have a hard time explaining how she already knew her name.
But the other redhead broke out into a sunny smile and swept her up into a tight hug, obviously not worried about fracturing the universe and allowing Angel to put her worries at ease. "You're here!"
"Whoa, hi!" Angel said with a laugh, hugging Rachel tight. "Ohmygod I don't believe it, hi!" She was positively giddy. Seeing a friendly face that was actually a friendly face was just wonderful. "How did you get here?!"
"Hitchhiked!" Rachel admitted honestly with a mirroring laugh as she released Angel from her attempt at causing death by hugs. She kept a light hold on the other woman's arms, though, taking comfort in the physical contact. "I, uh, was in the astral plane for a bit with David after the world went tits over heels. Ended up on the side of a road further out of the city when we came back." (Bad aiming.)
"Awesome!" Angel had no problem the physical contact. It was a good reminder that the other woman wasn't dead. She kind of needed that. "It's so good to see you though - did you get older?" It was a bit of an afterthought as her mind finally connected with her eyeballs. The differences were subtle, but there.
"Uhhh maybe?" Doug had mentioned it when he had first seen her, but she had never spent an inordinate amount of time staring at her face, or enough time to notice the difference. "I feel the same, but time in the astral plane works in a pretty strange way I guess. Weird, I know. But I've spent most of my life there."
And Rachel had learned that it was sometimes best to suspend normal logic when it came to the astral plane. (David looked the same, though. Which only made it weird-er.) "But whatever, enough of that. How's everything here?"
"Well anyways you look good." Angel grinned. God it was good to see her. "Everything here is...topsy-turvy. Hang on." Angel looked past Rachel, then grabbed her hand, pulling her into the locker room. "It's just weird, ya know?" She said as the door swung shut behind them. At least she knew nobody was in here and they'd have a little warning. "Have you seen any of the uh...new people yet?"
A telekinetic shield to muffle sounds was thrown up against the door for good measure, shimmering in pale blue -- it opened inwards, so they'd have more than ample warning. "Can't say I have. We arrived on Sunday and I've only spoken with people in the know. The new ones..." Didn't know her history and were not in any way vested in her existence. "Have no real reason to care about me. Why?"
The shield was certainly a good touch. Angel smiled a bit before saying, "Just curious. It's weird, ya know? People running around we knew who aren't really...who we knew anymore. Some of the old students are my age now. Of course I'm pretty sure you're older than me now." There was a hint of amusement in her voice. "So age is a bit subjective I guess."
"Molly did say she was older too, but I gathered that she's still the same Molly we knew," Rachel shrugged, not looking very bothered by it. "Something about Asgard?" Didn't really matter to her, so long as they had survived. How they had survived was less important.
There was a nagging feeling at the back of her mind, that felt a bit like a protest to that sentiment. She shook her head to dislodge that thought. "I guess it's not quite hit me yet, this whole new world. Though there is something to be said about me having already gone through this once before." (At least this time she had company.)
"Yeah, we're all in the same boat now," Angel said with a sigh. "Anyways never mind it though, how's it going? How've you been? How is it being back?" She couldn't help the rapid-fire questions. She was happy. It was so nice to see a face that was actually a face she knew.
Rachel laughed, moving to sit on a bench. "It's been all right. Only been a couple of days and all that. It doesn't really feel any different since... (Before)." She shrugged. "May sound a little odd to you, but I've probably never been better."
"Really?" Angel tilted her head a bit. She couldn't quite put her finger on it but something seemed...off about Rachel. Not bad just...different. Maybe it had been the time apart. "That's not a bad thing, though. Helps with coping/"
"It's more like some things just don't matter as much as they used to seem to me," Rachel said thoughtfully. She in no way meant to sound callous or anything, but, "life pretty much moves on from most things. (Even the catastrophic ones.) Still hurts to think of the loss and the dead, but it's not... crippling, the way it used to be."
Angel nodded slowly. "Yeah." It wasn't callous. It was just the truth. The reality they lived with. "Life goes on, right?"
"Pretty much," Rachel quirked a faint smile at her fellow redhead and tugged her down onto the bench to sit next to her. "What else can we do? Roll over and die?"
"Dude, we're redheads." Angel laughed as she sat down with her. "We don't die. It's physically impossible."
"Damn straight." Though not a hundred percent accurate. "But all the life-changing, (game-shaking), (world-breaking) shit aside, I don't suppose you know who I can talk to to get access to the Danger Room, do you?"
Angel smiled. "Ummm you generally just need an X-Man in the observation deck to make sure you don't accidentally maim yourself."
“And you are an X-Man, right?” Rachel hedged, the sly smile on her lips as far from subtle as such smiles could go.
"I might be," Angel returned with a sly smile of her own. "Give me ten minutes to change and get snacks?"
The answering smile was bright as the shield around the door shimmered once and disappeared into nothingness. "Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere."
