Alex and Sue: Surf Buddies
Sue takes Alex surfing, despite his reluctance to belive surfing happens in New York.
"Are you sure about this?" Alex asked, squinting a bit as they pulled into the parking lot. He was weary of anywhere that promised good surfing that wasn't on the west coast. But Sue had promised this place was good.
"Oh ye of little faith," Sue gave the beach a long look, "Ok so it doesn't loo like much but it's better than it looks I swear. And where else are you gonna get any surfing around here? The pool at hte mansion?" the asked with a grin.
"I'm sure someone could help us make it work," Alex said with a grin as he threw open the car door and went to unload the gear. "Alright, but this better be great."
"I can absolutely guarantee it will be at least 100% than any surfing you've done since you arrived in New York," Sue informed Alex with a nod, "besides, isn't it all about actually getting into the water in the end?"
Alex laughed at that. "True on both counts. Come on." He hopped out of the van and ran around to the back to unload their gear. He was the pack mule today.
Sue followed Alex out stretching slightly as she stared at the water, watching the figures paddling their boards out to the waves. "You'll really like the people here, we have a couple of investment bankers, a professor and a CEO or two too, as well as the normal surfer dudes who live near here. A more eclectic group of surfers you're never gonna find."
"Only in New York, right?" Alex asked with a grin as he stripped down to his swimsuit.
"Well and California," Sue admitted, "But only on certain beaches. You know what surfers are like, we so like to be exclusive," she noted with a laugh as she pulled off the sweatshirt she was wearing.
"That's true, we went to a small beach and it was always the same people," Alex said thoughtfully as he watched the water. The waves looked pretty good.
"It always is," Sue agreed, "Especially in an out of the way like this you only really have the interested and crazy out to surf. Especially at this time of the year, although you know all those armchair surfer's might have a point," Sue shivered in the cold air, "We have to be cray for doing anything in this weather."
"Is it bad?" Alex asked, honestly curious. He was a bit disappointed to not be able to feel the cold. Before his mutation he'd only ever lived in Nevada, which didn't get cold - at least not North-levels of cold - so he didn't know what it was like.
"Sometimes yeah," Sue admitted, "Until at least march you can't really go out without one of these," as she spoke Sue pulled her wet-suit out of her bag, "At least not unless you're one of the macho guys trying to show off. Most of whom spend an unusual amount of time on the beach. It's not quite ice, but you can definitely feel it if you spend too long in the water. Or you know can get into the water in the first place."
Alex looked down at his bare chest, then back at Sue. "I swear I'm not macho. Like I have a great chest and all but I'm not macho. I just don't feel cold."
"I gotta admit, I'd love to be able to do that," Sue admitted, "It would save me a fortune in wetsuits, and not having to worry about the temperature would have make surviving the New York winter so much easier," she told him with a grin. "You never feel it at all? And it is a very nice chest."
"Not really. It's pretty nice." Alex grinned, grabbing the boards out of the back of the van. "Come on, let's get out there."
"Show-off," Sue teased taking her board and glancing towards the beach, "race you there," she called over her shoulder at the ever increasingly distant Alex as she took off for the beach.
Alex laughed as he took off after her.

Pushing her board nose first into the sand Sue collapsed down next to it, pulling her hair out of it's ponytail and shaking out the salt water as she watched the other surfers drag themselves out of the water and vanish off towards their cars and their lives, waving at one or two of them who she knew. "And so just as quickly as they appear the rare New York surfer's vanish taking on the appearance of normal people until the waves call their names again." the noted to Alex in her impression of a nature documentary narrator.
"Knowing in their hearts that the ocean will always be their true habitats," Alex returned with a straight for about a minute before he laughed and plopped down next to her. "Okay, that was pretty great I'll admit."
"Oh ye of little faith, now next time I tell you a place is awesome you had better believe it," Sue teased playfully poking Alex in the side, "SO now you're seen surfer secret number one, it's time for surfer secret number two." she noted as she dragged herself up with a groan and held out a hand to Alex. "Just round the corner there is an amazing beachfront diner that makes the best waffles ever. And you know, we need to recharge our batteries after that."
"I will always believe you from now on, m'lady," Alex said, stooping into an odd bow before pushing himself up and grinning. "But now you've promised me food and I'm starving."
"Excellent, you're learning then," Sue told him snootily before winking and breaking out into a laugh, "You know," she saud giving Alex a long look, "I'm rich, but I'm not sure if Miss Frost, Julian, Warren and I combined could pay for you if you started really going at it," she needled playfully.
"We should try some time," Alex said with a grin. "I'm up for that challenge."
