Molly and Garrison: Moose Tracks

An X-Man and a tiny superheroine walk into a barn...

Molly wasn't very tall. That had been well established some time ago. But she'd gotten used to finding creative ways around things, like brushing the top of a moose that seemed like she was growing bigger everyday.

"Alright Daisy....three more strokes and then lunch time. Sound good?" she said, pausing a moment as if waiting for the moose to respond. When the moose moved her head, Molly smirked, taking that as a yes.

"Good."

"Her coat is getting longer for the winter. Gets tangled more easily this time of year." Kane said as he popped in the door, carrying a treat of cattails for the moose. He dropped them into her trough, enjoying as she pulled up the tender stems to munch on.

Molly eyed the moose. "Yeah, doesn't help when SOMEONE decides to go rolling around in a pile of leaves and gets them all tangled in there too," she said with a giggle, then nodded to Garrison.

"I swear I see a couple of boy meese lurking around during the spring."

"Next year should be her first year that she's ready to breed. Daisy is all grown up and ready to make a little Daisy." He gave her a familiar pat on the back of the neck while she ate. It had been Kane who'd taken on primary care of Daisy, citing her as a Canadian citizen under his protection.

Molly finished brushing the moose, then shook her head. "Pregnant mooses...probably should keep the kiddos out of the barn when that happens. Otherwise they'll get trampled, y'know? Not everyone's unsquishable."

"Nah, she won't come back here for that unless there's a problem with food or she's in pain." Daisy was an occasional guest to the barn. Her place was always ready, but she spent weeks roaming the parklands the mansion grounds connected to.

Slowly nodding, Molly leaned against Daisy. The moose was used to it by now.

"So when did you decide you wanted to become fluent in mooseinese?" she said with a broad grin.

"Cause that's like totally awesome! You're like the moose whisperer."

He didn't have to take care of her, there were literally dozens of people who might've stepped in, but he did.

"Nah, Daisy is smart and a sweetheart. Makes it easy. Besides, I swore an oath to protect my fellow Canadians, two legged or four."

Molly squinted. "Oh, dude. I forgot you were Canadian! Like Logan, and Wadem--Er, Wade. Were you part of that Weapon X thing too? Cause those guys suck."

"No, I met Logan as part of Alpha Flight. Well, Beta Flight now. He trained Marie and me for a couple of years. Wade... I didn't get the pleasure until he showed up here."

"Huh," Molly said with a nod. "'Cause I was about to say...it'd be kinda weird if the majority of the Canadians all know each other from before the mansion."

She dusted herself off. "I'm from California. Los Angeles, actually. But it's been awhile....well, for me, if you count Midgard and Asgard years."

"Asgard years. I bet that's something you never thought you'd say..."

Pulling her hair back into a ponytail, Molly laughed. "Nope. I totally didn't even know it existed. Greek gods? Yeah...TV shows have them everywhere. But dudes like Thor? Loki, the green asshat? No clue. 'Realm beyond mere mortals' and all that stuff," she said, adopting a pompous tone for the first part of her sentence.

"I heard that it was Paige that made it happen." Kane's eyes flickered down. "She was a good friend. I'm glad if that's the case."

For the first time, Molly's happy demeanor turned partially cloudy, and her smile faded.

"Yeah," she said quietly.

"She made it happen. Tandy, Ty and I were toast. Literally. Dumb evil freaking bird woman. But Paige saved us."

"I'm glad. She saved me too once. After Thor had basically killed me. I think she'd be happy to have done the same for you guys."

Molly blinked. "Wait, what?" she said, nearly falling off the haystack she'd taken a seat on.

"Thor KILLED you? Where was I? Oh right...a youngun. Super secret X-Person meeting, I'm guessing?"

"No. It was a giant fuck-up on my part that got a lot of people hurt. I made the mistake of punching him in the face."

Squinting, Molly shook her head. "So he KILLED you? Dude! That doesn't sound like Thor. You must've REALLY made him mad," she said, still blinking quite a lot. Then again, she kinda had a wee tiny crush on the guy with the hammer.

"He was under the control of the Enchantress. I caught the hammer. I don't really remember much, but it was Paige that stopped him finishing the job."

Molly made a face at the name 'Enchantress.'

"Oh. Her ," she said, her voice dripping with not-happiness. "Okay, so that makes a little more sense. But still, that sucks. Sorry you got caught up in that, but totally glad Paige was able to save you! Thor gets a little carried away with the dispensing justice sometimes. Or at least that's what Sif says."

"You know he's half Wisconsin biker these days, right?"

"Bikers like justice."

"They like weed and big tits. But Thor is a stand up guy. I'm glad he didn't kill me." Kane tossed an apple to her. "Do you want to spoil Daisy?"

"Okay, so bikers like weed, big tits, and justice," Molly said, ticking off the areas on her fingers.

"And like....really long beards. I don't get it," she added, her eyes glazing over thoughtfully, making the apple he threw totally miss her and land on top of the haystack. Molly jumped, then cringed in embarrassment. So much for honed, trained reflexes.

"Ack! Sorry. I was thinking about beards. I am TOTALLY up for Daisy spoilage," she said, picking up the apple.

"Kid, you're learning." Kane said, as she fed the apple to Daisy. "Do you want some advanced training?"

Molly perked up, her eyes widening with a grin. "Dude, always! Fighting kinda fun. Sif taught me like...the basics and stuff...y'know, Punchy, swordy? But X-People stuff? I've been wanting to learn since I was 15."

"Alright. Come down to the gym at four tomorrow. I'm going to turn those powers into a fighting machine."

Molly's eyes narrowed again. "Wait, we talking am or pm? I mean this will totally depend on what kind of Molly Hayes Experience you get."

"I was thinking AM. But wait, do you turn into a werewolf?"

Molly nodded with perfect seriousness. "Yep! You didn't know that?" she said. She lasted only a couple of moments before she descended into giggles, waving it away.

"Aw man, no I'm kidding. Just super strong and like...super unsquishable. Can we like...maybe make it 7 am, though? I do science and nighttime's like totally when I get my best breakthroughs for inventions and stuff so I like to tinker."

"Kid, whatever you want." Kane grinned, liking her more.

Molly gave him a bright grin back. "Awesome! It's a plan," she said, then tapped her chin.

"Now I totally want Moose Tracks ice cream. You wanna come with?"

"I've got some things to do, but I'll meet you at 7am."

Molly shrugged. "Suit yourself. More ice cream for me!" she said with a grin.

"And sounds good! See you later!"

She strolled out of the barn, humming the tune to 'Smoke on the Water' under her breath.
