ESCORT DUTY: The Plan
Kevin takes Clea on her first undercover mission in Madripoor. They meet up with an old friend of Kevin and discuss what the evening plans are.
The Malacca Pearl was as close as you could build a foreign to attract Americans specifically without putting a McDonald's in the lobby. Perched on the edge of Hightown, it offered a safe and sanitized version of Madripoor for a stream of well paying tourists eager to experience 'real' Asia. Of course, the real Asia experiences were carefully staged and had more to do with Hollywood than any actual truth. Visit the bustling market, where half the haggling shoppers were resort employees and security. Explore the seedy dive bar and dangerous locals, who were actors and stunt people with scripted threats and fights. It was Disneyland for people who still thought Hong Kong operated like the start of an Indiana Jones movie.
Which is why Kevin had booked Clea into the resort in the first place. It would be the last place that her appearance would raise any questions. His instructions had been clear; check-in, stay in her cover identity, and keep an eye out on the bar patio for the man in the Purdue U t-shirt on the second day to give the code phrase to.
So far so good. It was fun to play a spoiled brat of rich parents. She kind of felt bad for the bellboy who she had to snap at for dropping her luggage on the fist day. It wasn't the contents that worried her, she mostly feared the damaged done on the luggage itself, it was borrowed.
Her first day was spent in the market where she purchased a few souvenirs, ones that she knew she spent way too much for, followed by a late lunch in one of the local restaurants. After that she retired to her room for the night to prepare for the real work. Kevin had told her she was to look for her contact and she was a little nervous. It was her first undercover mission in a different country, but she had back up.
The second day, Clea made her way tot he bar patio and sat down at one of the tables with a book in hand. It wasn't long before a Purdue U t-shirt wearing man walked in, looked around before taking a seat in a table right next to hers. Clea gave him a once look over before speak. "Excuse me. How far is it to the Princess Bar?"
"Not far enough for a kid like you." The young man was blonde and bland, but the voice was pure Kevin. "Good job getting in. You seen any tails? Any undue attention?"
"Not anything that would cause an alarm. I am assuming they don't get many tourist that are red heads." Clea turned the page of her book but not really reading.
“Part of the reason we’re establishing this resort as your insertion point. Only place that you don’t stand out.” He said, waving over a staff member and ordered a drink. “Our contact is an ex-SHIELD agent who has the place wired. He’ll have the intel we need.”
"When is he supposed to make contact?" Clea asked without looking up.
"Knowing Dum-Dum, whenever he sobers up, rolls out of bed and is able to talk this week's lady friend out of her expensive car keys to come join us."
"Don't be an idiot, Sydney. I talked her out of the keys last night. Pillow talk, baby." An older dark haired man appeared with the drink Kevin had ordered and two he hadn't and joined them at the table. Dressed in white tropical pants and a Hawaiian shirt, the greying man looked like the pro at an island golf course. He gave Clea a smile and took a big swallow from a violently blue cocktail. "So, the Old Man send you out or this is a private matter?"
"Private. Clea, this is Tim Dugan. Formerly of the US Navy SEALs, SHIELD, and sobriety."
"The older the spy, the bitchier they get. Charmed." He saluted her with his glass.
Clea gave the man a once over behind her sunglasses. "Like wise." The British girl said to the man as she slowly closed her book after leaving the page end. "What years did you serve in sobriety?" She nodded to the two drinks in his possession.
"Mostly during Little League." He replied, taking a healthy sip from the one almost finished cocktail. "So, mutant trafficking?"
"Lui Kwan. He's a Red Pole with the 14K. Rumor is that he's got a couple of Hightown customers who are interested in something exotic and mutant. I'd like to shut down both sides hard."
"You choose a tough one this time. Kwan has been a fixer for Li Yuzhu and Henry Jaiyin for a few years now." Any joking had completely disappeared. "From what I've gathered, started out as drugs and whores. Apparently at some point, they got bored with that. Disappeared women, kidnapped for the trade, that sort of thing. Last year, a pair of twelve year old identical twins from Guangzhou, the Leis, disappeared on vacation. Zhang Lei, their father, has some serious juice back on the mainland and offered big money for any information regarding his daughters. Since then, both Yuzhu and Jaiyin have been quiet and squeaky clean. I've heard whispers that Kwan was involved somehow. If they're open for business again, it means they think the squeeze is protecting them and they're safe."
Clea eyebrows frowned at the mention of twins disappearing. It twisted her gut and it made her furious - but she was taught not to give away how she was feeling so the eyebrows was all moved. "Where can we find Kwan?" She was a rookie at this but still the question escaped her lips before she could stop.
"He's got a whorehouse down on the water at Pier 41. Conducts most of his business there, but the place is crawling with 14K."
"I can get us inside. Benny Chang still operating these days?"
"Yeah, although he's been banned from Hightown. Running scams on the tourists who want the 'real' experience as a guide and, well, thief at the end of the tour."
"Perfect. You know where Yuzhu and Jaiyin meet?"
"No, but I have some ideas. Gimmie a couple of hours and I'll nail it down." He got up from the table.
"Sure. What do we owe you?"
"For these fucks? I got a few drinks outstanding on my tab here. Clear that and get these assholes and we're even."
Clea looked over at Kevin, "Should I book a tour for one of these 'real' experiences?"
"Oh yes. Mention you want a private tour so you can party." Kevin said. "I"ll catch up with you later tonight."
Clea nodded as she stood up, "Excuse me, I have a party to plan." And walked back to her room to make a call.
