X-Men Mission: Agents of SHIELD - Part 9

The SHIELD team and Shadowcat focus on MODOK’s shield, trying to take it down to give the others a shot at stopping him.

"So, um... that's just a rather large head. Large. Head." Fitz muttered over the comms. "Imagine the huge pillow he'd-"

"You're not helping, Fitz." May snarled over the comms, wiping blood from her mouth where she'd caught the wrong end of a robotic backhand. Her weapons had done nothing against MODOK's shield, and the robots were threatening to swarm them. "Unless we can get that shield down, he'll overwhelm us eventually. Tell me one of you has an idea to get through it."

"Working on it," Kitty said. "There's got to be something we can do - maybe mess around with a magnetic field. We just have to figure out how to get to it." She wondered if her own powers might have any effect.

"It's like a low yield EMP. I can't find any remote way into his systems. If there are any." Fitz said, his drones racing around MODOK, collecting data for the agents. "The shield isn't static. It looks like it... refreshes every so often."

"Mm. Not refreshes, that's too. Mechanical. It's like it-" Simmons said, cutting herself off to watch her console spit updated readings. "Like it's..."

"Natural?"

"Like it's a mutation.."

"So if we draw his... its... whatever's attention to one place and then work on weakening another, there's a chance you'll be able to make a hole in the shield?" May asked as she snatched up a dismembered robot arm to use as a club on several others that were threatening to overwhelm her. "But there's no telling if ordinary ordinance will damage that thing."

"That's why we have telepaths, isn't it?" Kitty asked. She hoped that there'd be enough time for them to respond. "Fitz, if the shield refreshes every so often, does that mean there might be an opening?"

"It might. If it's tied to his abilities... yes, I think it might work." Fitz said over the comms. "If we can distract him, it might open up a gap they can use."

May rolled her shoulders and stretched her neck. "Fitz, concentrate your drones in front. Keep his attention there, no matter what." She pulled two semi automatic handguns from their holsters on her back. "Shadowcat, I'm going to need you to join Fitz's drones, make sure he doesn't pay attention to what I'm doing." She smiled grimly. "If we need a hole in this shield, I'll make one."

"May, I don't think that's a-" Fitz cut himself off as she launched into her attack. "Alright then. I've got the drones coming in. I'm slaving some of them to your console Simmons." He said.

"When I am finished, AIM is going to usher in a new age. No heros, no mutants... just human excellence!" A set of cannister bombs erupted from his back, driving the rest of his attackers off.

The heat teased Kitty for just a second before she phased, then lept toward Modok. She landed just a few feet in front of him, hoping that she could divert him enough with her presence to give the others a chance to make a difference. Her body darted back and forth, dodging drones and bombs as if she was more corporeal than she actually was.

"Doc and Bashful, three to your nine," Simmons cautioned, fingertips splaying out. "And away."

The drone attacks caught MODOK off guard, slipping micro-explosives past the interval quicker than a blink in the shield refresh. A complex set of connections between his head armor and his rocket pack were severed and he screamed in frustration as his shield winked out of existence.
