REALITY1: Proof of Concept - Log 1
Kane is working in the Danger Room when Kitty joins him and lets him know about their wormhole.
Kane wouldn't call the long hours he was logged in the Danger Room control room hiding exactly. There was still tension between him and some of the team, and frankly, his own emotional state wasn't exactly the most stable. Spending time in the DR, pouring out the information he'd learned into updating the profiles of the Brotherhood and creating new scenarios to take into account them, the Sentinels, and even the entire Hell Lord concept was a type of therapy. He was so engrossed in trying to find a way to simulate Lorelei's abilities that he didn't even register Kitty until she was behind his chair.
"Boo." She drummed her fingers on the back of Kane's chair, then quickly phased before he could swat her. Or worse. "Whatcha doing? I'd say I haven't seen you around here in a while buuuuuut..." She grinned, then gave him a shrug to indicate that she actually didn't mind if he wanted to hide in the control room. As long as he agreed to share it.
"Don't do that!" Kane said, jerking half out of his seat. He was happy to see Kitty, but didn't people realize he was jittery. Fortunately, his tone was less angry and more peeved. "Pryde, next time you do that, you better have beer as an apology."
"Just keeping you on your toes. Think of it as a Danger Room pre-funk." She hop-floated over a chair, phasing solid before sprawling in it. "Anyhow - you didn't answer. Whatever are you doing?"
"Just updating the Brotherhood suite. Lots of new faces, new powers, and who better than the guy who lived with them for months." He said with a shrug. "What about you? Any new developments in the half year I was away?"
"Well, let's see..." She pretended to consult an invisible watch. "Nope. Not other than the usual. Saving the world, crushing our enemies type of shit. I tend to be oblivious to drama though so probably someone's dating someone new or whatever."
Updating the Brotherhood suite... was that healthy? She wanted to ask him more about that, but hesitated, reluctant to dig deeper into whatever trauma he was exorcising. If that was what he was doing. Kitty herself felt like she was still tiptoeing around one reality or another when she examined her own past. In fact, she wondered if she was creating some alternate version of herself simply by not asking Kane the question. Her face took on a dreamy cast as she contemplated what realities might have sprung from even the simplest interactions.
"Really? This place getting through a Halloween and a Christmas without some kind of disastrous myshap has to be some kind of record." He mused, as he fiddled with the strength allocations on Dragoness' entry.
"Oh. That. Well, I just take the holiday disasters for granted." Kitty shrugged. "Although no one ever attacks on Hanukkah. Except my mother."
She watched him for a while longer, noticing that he set the strength on Dragoness higher than she would have, then said, "Maybe you should take a break from fixing up the Brotherhood settings. I know it's fun and all, but..." The words trailed off, her smile growing tighter as she waited to see if Kane would call her out for sticking her nose in where it wasn't wanted or needed.
"They are coming for us and believe me, they aren't what we think they are any more. Better training, better tactics, a few particularly nasty new recruits..." Kane said. "We need our edge back, and that means training against their full capabilities. And before you say anything, no this isn't therapy or penance or some kind of technological hairshirt. So, unless you got something more distracting, snoop..."
"Maybe, but..." She shrugged, then grinned. "You're probably more interested in playing with your toys than jumping into a giant wormhole."
"Jumping in a what now?" Kane said, his head coming up from the monitor.
"You miss a lot when you hide away in the Danger Room, dont'cha know?" Kitty said. She then proceeded to update him about the wormhole and the state of affairs at the mansion, her mind so full of words that she rattled them out quickly before they could get lost somewhere between brain and tongue. She watched his face for a reaction - any reaction - hoping that instead of apathy or worse, continued obsession, she sparked something that would get Kane away from whatever had happened and back out toward the real world.
Well, as real as the mansion ever got.
After she finished telling him, she halted, looking both awkward and fifteen years younger - like the Kitty who had once gotten migraines and fallen through floors. Like her, that Kitty had wanted to help her friends, but never knew how. Always felt in the way.
"Huh. So we now have a wormhole. This place is like living in 90s television some days. Did you end up using any of the tech from the DR incident on it? Vi still has it calibrated." He took her blank look for a no. "OK, I'm not the tech guy here, but pull up a chair. Maybe this stuff could help." He said, as he joined him at the table.
"Vi, bring up the records for the Paradox incident."
{Yes, Garrison.}
"Get ready to have you mind blown."
