Kyle and Sooraya - avocados and blackbirds

Backdated to Nov, Kyle and Sooraya do some meal prep, and talk about being X-Men and some future plans they both have for learning to fly the Blackbird.

"How far along are the avocadoes?" Sooraya bent down, over mitts firmly in place as she first pulled out a tray with several English muffins, then a special one with indents. In each one a perfect fried egg was sizzling away. "We're ready to assemble!"

Kyle tossed an avocado seed into the little wastebin bowl he'd set on the table. "I got maybe one more to peel and slice? Two if you really want a lot of avo." He raked his claws through an avocado half, and then dumped the slices out of the skin and onto a plate. "I should do a response video to that Glam Kitchen lady because I can't decide if she'd hate how I open this, or be like "You can stay, Kyle."

"I don't need a lot, but go nuts if you want too?" Swinging over to the stove top, Sooraya pulled the refried beans from the flames. Grabbing a spoon she started slatherine the lower parts of the muffins with the beans. "The one you sent me a while back? I think she is either gonna love you or hate you."

"Maybe if I also did the thing where I smash the garlic with my hand." Kyle eyed a few bulbs of garlic that were in a basket, shrugged, and then started cutting open one more avocado with the claw on his thumb. "Ima cut up the rest. Worst thing we get some guac out of it." He eyed the eggs. "You know, if we scramble next time I bet we could wrap them up and just like. Eat them on the go. I've got the early morning Danger Room monitoring, they'd be a great high protein breakfast for that."

"Hmmm..." Sooraya eyed her muffins and other ingredients as she finished with the refried beans. "Could work, but somehow the structure of the avocado and salsa always seems off when it's been frozen. That might just be me though. Oh wait... when you're done with the avocados, can you put that on the upper parts?" Putting the spoon away, she put the tray with muffin tops in front of Kyle.Turning back to the counter she grabbed a spatula and started flipping the eggs on the muffins.

Kyle started neatly dropping avocado slices into the english muffins. "Oh, yeah, frozen avo's gross. Maybe if we did.." One pass of avocado done, and he went back to add a second set of thin slices, crosswise against the first. "Avocado nests ready for salsa! Maybe if we did like, pesto. But then we'd have to skip beans. Also frozen beans are gross. Man, we'd have to re-work the entire breakfast sandwich, all because Gar doesn't fall for my 'bad at the Danger Room programming" schtick."

Sooraya passed Kyla the fresh salsa before returning to flipping the eggs on the muffins. "Then it's just better to start from scratch. Like... get all the different ingredients that you like and that freeze well and start making combinations. Like a big experiment." Tossing the spatula in the sink, she put the tray with muffins on the table so the tops could be added easily. "Totally forgot to ask... did you want some cilantro on them?"

"Do I, personally? No. Cilantro tastes like soap." Kyle said. "But you do you." He'd shredded some cilantro early on, but it was still sitting in a prep bowl, waiting. "I might do a re-work because I'm probably on early Danger Room for a while. We're building a profile to deal with Malice, and I'm avoiding all the other things I don't wanna re-cert in but I gotta."

"More for me then." Sooraya winked, carrying the bowl over to the small breakfast table they'd set. "Which things do you still need to recertify in?" She asked, glancing over her shoulder. "I did my first aid a few weeks back and that one was okay, but there are still two I need to do."

"Soap." Kyle muttered. "I know, I know, it's genetic, like asparagus pee." He spooned neat circles of salsa over the avocado, and then added little dots of hot sauce to half the sandwiches - pungent to his sensitive nose, but the kind of spice that Sooraya liked. "I'm avoiding Blackbird training. I'm fine for emergency landings but Scott keeps making those little 'sorry I was an ass when you were eighteen lets get you in the air' faces."

"The Blackbird?" Sooraya grimaced. "That thing is the bane of my X-men existence. I still need to do the emergency stuff. Thing is that Cyclops with my other training has been hinting that I really should start thinking about getting fully qualified to pilot the damn thing." She added bleakly.

Kyle grinned, despite himself. "Ooh, did you get the same speech I did? The one about like a decade of tenure in the team and field leadership and training new people and it behooves you to continue your training even if it makes you want to throw up your toes." He capped the hot sauce, and pushed it towards Sooraya's side of the table. "The man used the word behoove." He shrugged. "Gar just spams me PDFs of the training guide for the 'bird. Between the two of them I'm stuck."

"Not just the speech." Sooraya almost dropped the muffin in her hands. "I got the PDF's too. I thought it was just for review, but now I am starting to think they're working together or something. So... are you thinking about doing it?"

"They're totally conspiring." Kyle said. "I was restocking the first aid kids and emergency blankets and every time I got near Gar, he fuckin' air dropped me pdfs. I can't not think about it." He picked up one of the sandwiches, took an oversized bite, and set it down. "Taste testing. We do good work in the kitchen. Yeah, I mean, I'm never gonna be in love with the plane, but there's nothing stopping me except me, right?"

Sooraya took another bite, chewing thoughtfully as she analyzed the flavors. "I think next time I'd go for scrambled eggs though. Somehow the structure of the yolks doesn't really work for me. But yeah..." She set down her sandwich as she considered the plane issues. "I took a few lessons... when I just joined the X-men... but once I nearly crashed the plane in a simulation and the next time after I did crash it. After that I just decided to kinda let it go. But that's over ten years ago...I should give it another go, I think."

"Oof. Yikes." Kyle winced. "Man, all I got was Scott being in his uptight butthole phase." He took another bite of sandwich, and paused to consider textures, not just flavors. "Yeah, you know in thinking about it. It tastes right, but there's a texture thing here. Yolks are kinda gummy. Flavors are great though. Minus your weird obsession with soap plants." He grinned, clearly teasing. "Okay, wanna be Blackbird flight pals, because we're already breakfast pals, so, might as well build the plane stuff into the sandwich meetings. Little brainstorm a breakfast, little complain about how simulations suck, maybe take the time to go over the remote distance learning stuff?"

"Well... if I am gonna be trying this again..." Sooraya raised her eyes heavenward. "Best we do it with the two of us and keep each other sane. And don't laugh if I crash the simulation again!"

"Nah, I would never. See, what I wanna do now is say I'll be your wingman anytime, but. Have you seen Top Gun?" Kyle said. "Cause if not, first I gotta show you that movie, it's like, very eighties, and then I have to say it."

"I've seen the movie, but it's not really my thing." Sooraya shook her head, grinning. "But I think I get what you mean. I just hope your math and physics is better than mine, because it's been nearly ten years since I last opened a math book." She furrowed her brow, but quickly corrected herself. "No, there were those statistics classes I had to take in college, but that was it."

Kyle laughed and shook his head. "I worked hard for my C's in math. I teach English for a reason. My secret there is that I know a guy who math tutors, and he can bought with food." He dug in his pocket, pulled out his phone and started tapping out a test. "Group texting you and Doug, he's bribable. Got me through my masters level stats class and all it cost me was finding a new Korean BBQ place, and a couple of lunches."

"Doug is a good idea. A Korean BBQ place might be a little hard, but I just heard of a new Afghani restaurant at the mosque. It's a bit of a drive though." Sooraya offered after a bit of thinking. "I've been wanting to try it."

Kyle grinned. "I bet you five bucks if I text Doug, he'll have two halal korean bbq places before you can blink." He continued to text, until his and Sooraya's phone buzzed together. "Don't take the bet, he works with Jubilee, she's got a second career as a secret restaurant blogger."

Sooraya glanced at her own phone and rolled her eyes. "Doug, bets and dangerous... that's one I learned years ago." She started typing, her eyes just glinting a little. "There... let him steam a bit.. simply don't tell him which restaurant we are taking him to."

"God, he'll eat anything but not knowing's going to make him nuts. Good idea, it'll be great."
