Artie and Jono, communication support

Artie, delayed by injury, finally drops by Jono to offer some communication support.

Artie was a slightly horrifying sight at the moment, old bruises from the car crash still covering his nose and face. He moved stiffly, ribs keeping his torso immobile. But he was up and mobile again, if unshaven and still in sweats.

He knocked on what was hopefully Jono's door and waited.

Jono would have frowned if he had a mouth when he heard the knock at his door, he waited a moment just to see if the shadow visible under his door would move. It didn't. God he wished he could sigh.

Jono stood and walked to the door, opening it with what he hoped was his best 'unimpressed' look. It was good to set a baseline for interactions here, he'd learned.

Artie sighed and waved hi, putting the bag he carried down. His BSL wasn't great. "My name is Artie." The two handed fingerspelling was awkward. He'd never gotten as familiar with this manual alphabet. "I'm here to give you communication support now you can't talk."

Jono stared at the other man in almost disbelief. Sure.... a child had once gestured at his face, but an adult? He just couldn't catch a break.
What was that about this place being better? Jono thought bitterly, hoping that wherever he was Quentin could hear it. He glared at the other man for a moment before slamming the door in his face, loud.

Just for a moment though. He soon opened it again, notebook and pen in hand. What. Do. You. Want.

Artie replied with his synthesizer, taking a moment to type out a response, a cartoon rotating hourglass spinning as he did so. "I was told you can't talk. I was also told you know BSL, which clearly isn't true. These --" An arrow pointed at the bag " - are a few options for communicating that work a bit better than a fucking notepad."

Who told you that? Jono wrote. The notepad method has worked just fine for over a year. Thank you.

An image of Amanda. "Her." Artie shrugged. "Sure. Come chat if you want something better. Or don't. I don't actually care."

Don't know why she'd say that. Jono rolled his eyes. He made a fist to crack the knuckles on either hand, trying to calm himself down before he blew a gasket. Sorry, bit of a bitch to get dropped off, forgotten, and then the first person who comes to help you comes off like he's pointing out that you've lost your fucking jaw....what do you have?

"That's BSL for speak," Artie replied. "It's a pretty literal language but you'll get a lot further here with ASL." He gave a slightly hideous grin, bruises shifting. "I have a giant tongue." He hissed, letting it become visible. "Means I don't have the anatomy for oral speech."

No jaw or vocal cords. Jono wrote, aiming for sardonic. What do the devices do?

"That's rough, buddy." Artie squinted slightly and created images to go with what he was typing on his phone. "We have a few options. Different keyboards for a phone or ipad, if you like to type. A couple of all in one devices with tactile keys instead of touch screens. You can use your hands just fine, so... That was one of April's issues - changed hands made devices hard." He gave an image of her other form to explain. "And the good software for your phone and computer. His head, still only 90% recovered, was starting to ache. "You can't use my primary devices, because they link with my powers."

Jono quickly scribbled. Typing is good. How do they work?

He still didn’t necessarily trust the man, or most people at the mansion for that matter- but the offer of communication was tempting.

"Don't ask me about the software side. That's not my gig. But -- " Artie stopped typing and moved to images. Cartoon person typing into - a regular phone, a phone with one of the bluetooth keyboards and a lightwriter, all three emanating sound waves - "Basically, you type, it speaks. The software sounds more natural than it used to and there's an option on some to simulate emotion if you want it. I only use that when I'm having to pretend to be oral."

Jono’s eyes narrowed in on the light writer and glanced a few times at the phone with the bluetooth keyboard. The second two. Could I see them?”

Artie nodded and held out the bag.

Jono reached in and pulled out a light writer and held it in his hands. He nodded to the other man in thanks and then tried to type the same message into the machine.

It was pretty self explanatory. Artie smiled slightly in response to the thanks and said "Keep the others too. See what suits you." Not telling Jono he didn't need any of this was hard but to the best of Artie's knowledge, he still hadn't figured out his predecessor's powers. Time would resolve the issue. Or not. It wasn't his problem.

‘Sorry for being a wanker.’ Jono typed. ‘Thank you again.’

Artie waved it away. "No problem." He turned to leave, absolutely on his way back to bed now, obligations completed.
