Session 0 for Paige's D&D group
Paige, Jono, Mel, Ashley, Match, Emily, Clea, Kevin, Jessie, Sharon, and Doug come together to create characters and go over the basics for their Dungeons and Dragons game.
Paige excitedly bustled around the rec room, getting all of her supplies set out for the first meeting with her new D&D party. The table she had picked was loaded with snacks, paper, pencils, dice, and a copy of the player's handbook for reference. Since this was the first time for a lot of her players, she thought it would be good to do character creation as a group rather than letting her players do it on their own. She might be going a bit overboard with everything, but it had been a while since Paige had been able to play and she had only DM'd for one shot adventures before, so she wanted to make sure everything went well for everyone.
Once everything for the players had been set out and organized, Paige pulled out her guide for the setting and sat down, waiting for everyone to show up.
Emily peeked into the room, her face breaking out into a smile when she saw Paige was already there. Nothing worse then turning up so early that you were the only person in the room and you weren’t the organiser.
“Hi!”
“Hi!” Paige waved. “Come on in, just waiting for everyone to show up.”
Emily hurried in and sat at one of the places around the table, slinging the small bag she’d been carrying across the back of her chair. She almost never went anywhere without it these days, too many books and other things to carry.
There was a meow. A small purple housecat sauntered into the room, tail held high with alert interest. Sharon made it a few steps into the room before pausing to cast a glance over her shoulder, clearly waiting.
“I think you know more than me, Cats just said we were doing this, and that there was a lizard, er, I could bring my lizard? I don't remember." Match's hands were firmly in his pockets, as he looked back at Jono, before realizing there were other people present. Clearing his throat loudly, his eyes dropped to his shoes as he motioned the brunette in front of him.
Jono shook his head fondly and typed out on his lightwriter. "You'll be fine, we went over your backstory last night! You're definitely prepared."
Jono squinted his eyes and waved at Paige as he sat down at the table, pulling out his character sheet, backstory packet, pencil, and dice.
"I heard about dice and I was really interested. This is a little different than street craps. I would have loved a, what's it called? d8? I could have won a lot of money with a d8." Kevin appeared in the doorway, holding a drink, dress in a suit. Casual never seemed to find a way to reach the man. He walked in and passed over a bottle of bourbon to Paige - Woodford Reserve - with a nod of his head. "To the hostess. Thank you for the invite."
He then found a seat, reaching into his jacket pocket for a battered moleskin which he opened and added a pen to.
"Hi everyone!" Ashley had a backpack over one shoulder, and a bakery box in each hand. "Wow maybe I didn't get too many cookies!" She set both boxes down, snapped the string on one and then took a seat, and took a book and a notepad out of her bag. "My dad mailed me a Player's Handbook, so we have an extra, and I brought extra dice." She set a plastic container of dice down on the table, and then took a bag out as well, opening it to show an assortment of multicolored assorted dice. "Match can I see your lizard? I've never met him!"
Mel entered the room soon after, and started a little bit at the sight of how many people had already arrived. “Hi! Sorry- am I late?” She grinned at everyone in the party, narrowing her eyes slightly upon seeing Jono, and sat down next to Paige. To her sister she leaned in and whispered, “I’ll tell you the full deal later but Becky from my work got one of the orders wrong an’ I was runnin’ around sorting that out all morning. The boss is not happy. ”
Clea walked in, in full reinassance attire, with elf ears. She didn't go to cons anymore and she didn't have a chance to wear the costumes she created anymore. This was the prefect moment. "Greeting, fellow adventures." The red head said as she took an empty seat next to Kevin. "I have extra cloaks if anyone is feeling daring."
“Oh! Can I have one? I didn't know we were doing cosplay but I for sure would have dressed up more,” Emily said, truly excited now. She'd heard of gaming groups that got really into the ambiance but she'd never thought she'd be apart of something like that. This was gonna be awesome. “Although I suppose I should decide on the character first”
Doug had -barely- resisted the urge to come to the session with his broadsword strapped to his back. But that would have been a bit much for a casual introduction to D&D, so he had contented himself with a cape that hung nicely over his shoulders and draped dramatically down his back. Little a showmanship, as a treat. "If anyone needs help translating a general character concept to an actual character class and such, I'm happy to help," he told the group. He might not be playing, but he was content to lend his experience to the effort. He was particularly interested in seeing what Kevin came up with.
"I'm not late!" Jessie said as she hurried into the room, cloak flairing around her, hair bright blue and short enough to show off her pointed ears, folder clutched to her chest. "I'm lying, I'm totally late. Sorry." She grabbed the last empty seat and sat down, opening the folder as she did so. "I have a few different ideas, I figured I'd see what best fits the group."
Paige looked around at the assembled party, thrilled that most of them were comfortable enough to show up in costume. She indicated the pile of stuff in the middle of the table. “Grab whatever you need. Today is all about character creation and covering the basics of playing for anyone who’s new. I will do my best to answer any and all questions y’all have. Let’s get started!”
