Angelo and Jane
He takes the puppy to cheer her up, and succeeds.
Having part-decided, part been gently prompted, to leave Amanda's medlab room after she fell asleep, Angelo headed for his suite and his computer. Seeing Jane's somewhat dejected post, he whistled for the puppy and made his way to her room for a cheering-up visit.
Jane wasn't precisely moping, really. She wasn't doing much of anything. Which was NOT moping, no way, no how. She was... resting. In her room, on her bed, in the dark. The Mansion just felt a bit empty because people were gone, not everyone, sure, but it just reminded her that she had no other place to go.
Angelo arrived at his destination and knocked briskly on the door, Joyita bouncing around his feet. "Jane?"
"Come in!" She switched on her bedside lamp, figuring that sitting in the dark would give away her away as possibly, maybe, moping.
With a grin, Angelo opened the door a little and nudged the puppy gently forward with his foot, encouraging her to go in before he did.
Jane lit up when she saw Joyita. The puppy was just too cute -- not even the most grim person could withstand that cuteness and Jane was not naturally a depressed person. She grinned and helped the puppy up onto her bed to cuddle with her. Looking up, she saw Angelo grinning at her. Then she addressed Joyita. "Oh woe, has someone abandoned this poor puppy? Look at how sad and dejected it is!" she said, ignoring the happy wiggles and licks the puppy was giving her. "Pain, angst, despair! Without a home on Thanksgiving, this poor puppy will end up alone! Woe!" She sighed dramatically.
Angelo chuckled and came further into the room, dropping casually into one of the chairs. "'f you want small furry company for the night, she's yours. I'll be wantin' her back in the mornin', though."
"Heh. No, thats okay, you need cuddles, too, and Amanda." She pet Joyita absently, enjoying the warm furry cuteness. "Saw my post of woe and decided to come cheer me up, eh?"
He nodded. "You sounded like you needed it." He didn't voice his thought about Amanda not exactly being in any shape for cuddles, even puppy cuddles, just then.
She shook her head. "I'm just being silly. I have so much to give thanks for! I shouldn't wish for more."
"Everybody does, though, that's the thing", he told her quietly. "You ask anybody here, I bet there's not a one of them who's not wishin' for somethin', however happy they are."
"'S probably part of the human condition." Jane studied her friend. "Despite all the badness that has gone down lately, are you happy, Angelo? I mean, I am usually pretty happy, but what about you?"
He paused before answering carefully. "I think... everythin's as good as it could be with what's gone down. An' it will get better, I think. So, yeah."
Jane privately wondered if it ever would get better. Something was always happening to hurt or upset or worry her friends. There was always a crisis. Probably just another aspect of the Human Condition, but still... And here Angelo had come to cheer her up with all of his own worries. It made her feel like an ungrateful wretch. "I'm glad you're okay then, Angelo." She reached over to squeeze his hand.
He squeezed back, smiling slightly. "It's okay to be upset about your stuff, you know", he said perceptively, watching her face. "Even if you think you shouldn't be because you've got it good here, or your stuff isn't as big or as bad as other people's. That's not the point. It's yours."
"One of the few things that is." She winced. "Erm, sorry."
He shrugged. "Don't need to apologise. I've been there, I know how that feels."
"I just feel like I don't give enough back to you all for everything you've given me. I mean, Professor Xavier has helped me so much, with money and food and a place to stay! And Doc Samson. He saved me. And you and Lorna and Alison and Amanda and Jamie and everyone! You've all given me so much and I don't have anything to offer in return."
"You've got you", Angelo said quietly. "You're a friend to all of us. It's enough."
"I'm not much of a friend," she pointed out. "I don't know things like what clothes to wear and I'm not good at helping when you're in trouble because I get so scared and I don't really have enough money to buy you presents and, and here I am just whining to you when you have more important things to think about! I'm sorry." Jane looked away, ashamed at how she was carrying on.
Angelo laughed a little, not unkindly, and reached for her hand. "Jane. Look at me. You think it matters that you don't know what clothes to wear? Or that you don't have any money? You do the best you can, an' that's good enough for me. An' you shouldn't ever feel guilty about needin' to talk about your stuff - it's not whinin', an' you've done it for me often enough."
"You. Really don't mind?" She just wanted people to like her. And now Angelo was telling her that just being herself was enough? It didn't seem possible.
He smiled. "I really don't mind. Would I've come to cheer you up if I didn't wanna hear about what was wrong?"
"No, I guess not. I really do have the best friends ever!" Jane gently set Joyita temporarily aside and leaned over to capture Angelo in a big hug. "Thanks," she whispered.
He hugged her back warmly. "Not a problem. Like I said, you've done it for me enough times."
"And I'll do it again, any time you need." She settled back and picked up the puppy again. "But lets talk about something happy now! What all are we going to have for dinner? At the institution last year we got a special meal and I figure it'll be similar...?"
He grinned. "Thanksgivin' usually comes with turkey, potatoes, yams, cranberries... Jamie an' Rahne've been in the kitchen all day. Well, at least one Jamie, anyway."
Jane nodded. "Neat. We did get that at the institution, but somehow I think that this year the food will be better. And I know that the company will be better!"
Angelo answered, still grinning, "Lorna'll probably be demandin' a full report on how the food was when she gets back, so they'd better hope it's real good. 'm sure it will be, though."
"I'm surprised that Lorna isn't teleconferencing with them, directing the cooking from afar, actually."
"She's got a surfer boy to concentrate on", Angelo pointed out.
"Heh, yes she does, and Alex is good at grabbing her concentration." She shared a wicked grin with Angelo. "Well, I don't think I can help Jamie and Rahne cook, but maybe there is something else I could do?"
Angelo considered. "Well... could make decorations. For the table, maybe?"
Jane thought about that. Sounded fun, actually. "Oh, yeah, I like that idea! What kind of decorations?"
"You didn't have decorations at the... where you were?" he asked, oddly saddened by that. "Okay, well, the usual thing is a cornocopia - you know what that is? - some paper turkeys an' maybe a few little bits. Leaves, flowers, streamers."
"We did have a cornocopia in the reception area, but we wern't supposed to touch it. But I can do that! You're awesome, Angelo, thanks! I better get cracking, though, dinner is in a few hours and I have lots of decorations to make! Do you wanna help?"
He grinned at her enthusiasm. "Sure! Should probably get this one fed an' bedded down before that, though, don't wanna let her loose in the art room."
"Greatness!" Jane handed Joyita over to Angelo. "I'll meet you there, then?"
He took the puppy with a nod. "Sure thing. See you down there in a bit."
