Angelo has to reassure an old room mate
Alex sat by the window in the corner of the library, watching more snow fall outside. Not many people came in here and Alex was afraid if he stayed in his room, an angry mob would be after him. He sighed, trying to think of nothing.
Angelo slipped quietly into the library, aiming to catch up on some of the work he'd missed during his withdrawn time. Spotting Alex in the corner, he headed in that direction. They needed to talk...
Alex didn't notice Angelo’s entrance, his mind trying to avoid other things. Alex didn't doubt the entire school, well, except Shiro, hated him, especially it seemed Paige, Jamie and most probably Angelo. He sighed sadly.
Walking up to Alex, Angelo knocked his fist on the wooden paneling to attract the other boy's attention. "Hey", he said simply.
He started, the knock sounding loud in his ears after sitting in quiet. Alex looked over in the direction the noise had come from, but when he saw who it was, he dropped his gaze. He wondered when someone would come to chew him out in person. "Hey."
Angelo looked concerned, having not expected that particular reaction from Alex. But then, maybe he should have. He'd seen Alex's post, and the comments to it... "You okay, man?" he asked, aware as he spoke of the irony of his words.
Alex closed his eyes then turned to again looked out the window, missing Angelo's concerned look. "Shouldn't I be asking you that question?"
"Hey. We saw each other's posts, didn't we?" Angelo countered. "Sounded to me like you need some reassurance."
"Reassurance of what? The fact the entire school hates me?" He knew it came out bitterly but he couldn't help it. He was tired of being attacked at every turn for doing something he wished someone would have done for him.
Angelo sighed. "The entire school does not hate you. Jamie apologized, remember? And Paige was as nice as she could be in what she said. And... would I be standing here talking to you if I hated you?"
"You'd be surprised..." Alex's gaze didn't move from the window but he sighed. "You’re lucky to have friends like that..."
Angelo looked at him sympathetically, but spoke with just a touch of the sardonic in his voice. "Did we read the same comment from Paige? 'Cause the one I read said she wanted to get to know you better, or words to that effect."
"Right after threatening me... yeah that's going to go well. Of course, it's only after I hurt her friend that she even cares..." Alex closed his eyes, thinking of a way to change the subject. "I hear your moving out..."
Angelo winced. "I was hoping you'd hear it from me first. Listen, man, that's got a hell of lot more to do with Shiro than it does with you. I know you meant well, and we've always got on fine otherwise..."
"Tell that to the others. I'm a regular Judas for all they're concerned...and I'm sick of being attacked for it!" Alex turned finally to look at Angelo, pain in his eyes. "I'm sorry Angelo...but I really did think I was trying to help..."
Angelo reached to squeeze his (former) room-mate's shoulder, eyes understanding. "I know you did. And I'll try to make the others get that too. And hey, I'm out of the room and talking to people, right?" He grinned encouragingly.
Alex smiled softly, but only for a moment. Then he shook his head and turned his gaze back out the window.
Angelo patted his shoulder once more, then let his hand drop. Realizing that Alex wanted to be alone, he said softly, "Just remember, I'm not moving out because of you. I'll only be next door, so come find me or Paige any time you want, okay?"
"You, I'll come see, Paige'll just bite my head off." He muttered, but he did turn and grabbed Angelo's hand as it fell. "Thanks."
Angelo gave his hand a quick squeeze. "She won't. I'll talk to her. Even though she already *said* she wouldn't. She keeps her word, you know?"
"As I said, the threat made it hard to believe, but I believe you." Then Alex dropped Angelo's hand and turned back to looking out the window.
Angelo looked at Alex in silence for a moment, wanting to say something more, but unsure of the right words. Finally, he said quietly, "Just come find me, any time. Don't be a stranger." And with that, he turned and disappeared into the stacks to look for the books he'd come for.
