Terry and Scott, Saturday

Terry goes looking for Scott to discuss her lack of voice. They come up with alternate training plans.

Her throat had stopped hurting. That was about the only good thing about this whole situation. Her throat didn't hurt but it was red and inflamed and according to Amelia, looked like so much raw meat. Not that the doctor had had anything like sympathy over the fact that Terry couldn't so much as whisper. She'd given her a throat spray and assured her she'd be all right in a couple of days.

In the meantime, Terry was scheduled for a Danger Room session but without her voice, training was perfectly useless. Which was why she was looking for Scott. Even before she rapped on the door, she flinched, anticipating the deafening sound of her own hand against the wood. She knocked, one long, a pause, one long, one short, one long, one short. It was an old habit and at the moment a particularly useful one.

"Come in." It was a soft response, or would have been had Terry's hearing not been working a little too well. Scott smiled at her as she came in. "Hey, I thought you were scheduled for a Danger Room session?"

Instead of a relatively soft tone, Terry winced like he'd shouted at her and soundlessly crossed the room to sit down gingerly. "I can't speak," she tried to say but though her lips moved, no sound emerged. She sighed and shrugged, lifting her hand to touch her throat lightly then very gently the shell of her right ear. "Everything's too loud." She formed the words carefully, mindful that lipreading was very difficult.

Scott frowned. "Have you seen Amelia?" he asked, careful to keep his voice very low as he came over from the file cabinet and sat down next to her.

Terry nodded, held up two fingers, pointed at the calendar on his desk, spread her hands and shrugged. Nothing could be done about it, she just had to wait it out. "Laryngitis" The expression on her face was rather more eloquent, conveying entirely her exasperation and her not inconsiderable worry about losing her voice.

Scott was a little more bothered by the 'everything's too loud'. He leaned forward and grabbed a pad and pen. It'll be all right. he wrote in his clear, neat handwriting. Mutant physiology is just a very tricky thing sometimes. He looked up at her and offered an encouraging smile.

The quiet scratch of pen on paper was much more tolerable than speech. She reached out and took the notepad from him. Dr. Voght said it would go away on its own. She suggested earplugs. She paused and dug into her jacket pocket, pulling out a small cardboard box and giving Scott a 'can you seriously believe that?' look. I can't train right now. Not really supposed to even try to speak. :(

Scott took the pad back, quickly sketching a stick figure with hair corresponding to the way Amelia wore hers and very formidable-looking eyebrows. Her bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired, doesn't it? He looked at Terry, his expression full of compassion, then added a line. I know what it's like to have physical problems related to your powers. But it will be okay.

Of course he did but she never had, not like this. There's been that weirdness after Vegas and the aftereffects of Toad's attack on her but nothing like this. Her response was heavy on the page. I can't do anything right now. I don't want to just wait for it to get better. What else can I do that isn't regular training????

Scott tilted his head at her, then took back the pad and began to make a list. 1. Tactical reviews. 2. Danger Room programming tutorial. 3. Flight simulator training (with the sound off!) He grinned at her.

Terry brightened, that was much better. She'd expected the first, had considered the second herself but the third...now that sounded like a brilliant idea. Can I do that? She drew and emphatic arrow at the sound off part of the simulator option. Thought the sounds were integral?? She'd wanted to learn to fly the jet since...well, ever but had expected that she'd need blacks before she got a crack at it. Also...strategy. Like leader stuff? Big pleading blue eyes were more effective on Bobby but she had used them effectively on 'big brother' Scott before too.

It's just a simulator. Can't get the whole experience with the sound off but could manage a first lesson. :) This was rather funny, really, writing notes to each other. And wow, was she pulling out the anime eyes.

YES!! she scribbled next to his response and did a little dance in her chair. Then tacked another question mark to 'leader stuff' and added I want to learn what you do. She gave him an expectant look.

Scott glanced back at his desk - then almost laughed, before he remembered that to Terry it would be a bit loud. What precisely did he have on his desk that couldn't wait, in terms of paperwork? Let's go down to the Situation Room then. Quieter down there too.

Terry nodded solemnly and got up, placing her feet lightly. She was already good at moving silently--having a naturally sneaky disposition helped as did being much more aware of the sounds you made--so she didn't have much trouble avoiding the pounding sound of shoes on hard wood. Her thin-soled ballet slippers only aided that. With a little bow to Scott, she gestured him to precede her and gave him an excited little smile.

Definitely better than the paperwork, Scott thought, smiling back as he walked through the door.
