New Orleans is Sinking: Remy/Ororo/Pete
Ororo, Remy and Pete discuss what's coming.
It had been hours on the phone, running down sources and wringing every scrap of information from his contacts to try and understand what was going on. He'd gone so far as to ask Emma Frost for help with the political side, and after extracting a promise for a future favour, she'd obligied by asking some questions to people in the know in Washington DC. The results were not encouraging. Even Ororo's arrival, as he caught sight of her coming out of the elevator, while he was on his way to Pete's office, failed to cheer him even a little.
"Remy." Striding along the hallway, Ororo caught the Cajun before he reached the office, laying a hand on his arm to slow and then stop him. "I have had another call from the NOAA. The storm is heading unerringly towards New Orleans." Her expression was drawn, her tone sober. "It will make landfall there, and soon."
"I know. Frost has been on de phone wit' people in Washington. It doesn't look good." Remy waved her to follow him. "Just going to give Pete de details. Has it slacked off at all, or is it still growing?"
"Still growing without logical explanation. Nobody knows what to make of it." Except Ororo and the others at Snow Valley, but while the NOAA had been surprisingly open-minded about mutant powers affecting the weather, she wasn't about to introduce them to the concept of magically-influenced atmospheric events. At least not right now.
"Merde. 'manda and Wanda have found some evidence to Africa weather rituals or something. We've pretty much ruled out 'nother
mutant wit powers like yours. It has to be magically based." Remy pushed through Pete's door. "And here's where it gets worse. Because
of de course change, FEMA is ignoring NOAA's recommendation for a mandatory evacuation organized by de National Guard. Dey say it
likely to shift again, and might not hit de city full on. Hey Pete. We've got bad news and bad news, homme."
Pete looked up as they entered.
"OK, assuming I am taking the correct meaning from what you were saying as you walked in, and the looks on your faces, New Orleans is about to get stomped on, hard. And the US government is going to let it happen. Is there *any* good news?"
"Not really. Dere's all kinds of bad news under every rock dat we turn over. 'Ro's been talking to NOAA, and it's a nightmare scenario dey got going on down dere."
Quickly Ororo outlined the information she had gathered from her sources, stressing with certainty that the storm would be hitting the city despite the government's feelings to the contrary. "Basically what is happening is that the residents are being set up to suffer the brunt of this hurricane without any preparation or relief efforts in sight. Though with a storm this large..." She shook her head. "They might as well be setting up priests as relief workers."
"Look, Remy got a letter from Tante. 'manda too. We have to go down. Dere's... debts owed dat we have to meet. Dis thing just gets uglier de more dat I look at it. If you can keep dem digging for information, maybe I can use de non-aligned Guilds to get to Belladonna. Dis unnatural, she might be behind it."
