Nathan and Catseye (and Rachel)
Backdated to Monday
Catseye goes to check on Nathan in the infirmary.
One of her humans was hurt, and for Catseye that meant making a trip
to the infirmary despite the fact that it was a BadSmellPlace. She
stalked over to Nathan's door with a purposeful stride and rose to her
hind legs to open it. Careful not to let her claws make even the
slightest noise on the floor, the lavender cat entered the room,
closing the door with her tail and approaching Nathan's bed. It was an
easy leap onto his pillow, and immediately Catseye curled up alongside
the top of Nathan's head and began to purr in a quiet, comforting
rumble, her own head resting on her front paws as she kept a vigil.
The purring was the first thing Nathan noticed when he woke up, about
an hour later. The second thing was the tip of a purple tail waving
lazily, just at the corner of his vision. Only then did the weight on
the pillow register, and he found himself smiling a bit helplessly.
"Hello."
"Meep." Shifting slightly, and with ears and whiskers pressed back,
Catseye gave Nathan's temple a lick. SoftHands smells like
hurt. She proceeded to lick at his face repeatedly with her rough
tongue.
Why yes, Amelia, Nathan thought privately, the student was
licking my face. Really, it's not what it looks like. Stepping
hard on the urge to laugh - his ribs were still not up to it, he
reached up and rubbed her gently behind the ears. "I'll be better
soon," he said lightly. "It's good to see you back."
Catseye resumed her purring, kneading her front paws into Nathan's
pillow to fluff it up for him and make him more comfortable.
Catseye is very happy to be back at her mansion. Catseye thinks
many of her humans need her and she is happy to be here to help them.
And the mansion has more pastrami and warm beds than BigBrother's
apartment.
"Well, you know. We enjoy your company too." Nathan turned his head in
her direction, wincing as the dull throb of his headache grew sharper.
He managed a slightly weaker smile, even so. "You should see Rachel.
She's gotten so big."
So that he wouldn't have to cran his neck, the purple cat rose from
her crouch and padded down the length of the bed to sit next to his
knee, where she proceeded to wash her face with a paw. Catseye
would like to see FlyingKitten... as long as FlyingKitten does not
pull Catseye's tail. Pet the cat. You know you want to, she urged,
finishing her face wash and pawing at his hand.
Nathan obediently raised his hand and stroked her head. "She sneaks
down here a few times a day," he said. "You stick around, she's liable
to come through the door. She'll remember you, you know."
SneakyFlyingKitten, Catseye purred, bumping her forehead and
then her cheek against Nathan's hand. Catseye approves. But if
SneakyFlyingKitten pulls Catseye's tail Catseye will thwapp. Right ear
please! SoftHands smells a little like a Dead Thing, she pointed
out, licking at Nathan's hand.
"Too much time down here," he said with a sigh, scratching the right
ear. "Metal and medical smells and all the other bad stuff. I could
use my own bed and a damned window to open. Not to mention natural
light."
With a rather un-cat-like look, Catseye leapt onto Nathan's bedside
table and pawed at a cup of pills. Calculating, she nudged them just
hard enough to have them flipping onto the bed. SoftHands must take
medicine and get better and then SoftHands can leave the BadSmellPlace
and nap in the sun! She jumped back onto the bed and head-butted
his shoulder.
"Genius," Nathan said. "Seriously, you're a genius. And very talented
when it comes to pill-flipping." The cup had landed right-side up,
even. Amelia must have left it while he was sleeping. Nathan tossed
them back, washing them down with a sip of water from the glass on the
table. The tickle at the back of his mind warned him an instant before
a tiny red-haired figure appeared at the door.
Rachel grinned to see him awake, her thoughts returning to their
normal volume. Then her gray eyes went huge at the site of the purple
cat sitting on the bed. "Kitty?"
Catseye wrapped her tail around the empty cup of pills and replaced it
on the table, preening a little at Nathan's comment about her
pill-flipping talents. Her ears pricked forward when she heard the
approaching footsteps of a Small Human and she sauntered forward to
the end of the bed. "Mrrrrrow!" FlyingKitten!
"Kitty," Rachel said, her eyes suddenly filling with tears. She
floated up onto the bed and hugged Catseye fiercely.
"Hey," Nathan said gently, a little alarmed by the tears. But she
looked up at him, grinning. "Happy tears, then. Okay."
"Missed you, kitty," Rachel said, sniffling, and Nathan watched them, amazed.
"Gak!" Unused to being hugged so tightly, Catseye felt like she was
being strangled. Instinctively her claws came out, but she held
herself back from scratching at Rachel and wriggled a little instead
to make herself more comfortable. Really, Rachel wasn't actually
hurting her- she'd just caught the feline off guard. Catseye missed
you too, FlyingKitten, she said with a purr, rubbing up against
Rachel's chin. SoftHands, why is FlyingKitten crying? she
thought curiously. Cateye's fur is getting all wet!
"She's had a hard summer," Nathan said, blinking a bit rapidly
himself. "Me being hurt...Ray, don't strangle Catseye, all right?"
Rachel drew back, and applied herself very dilgently to very careful
scratches behind Catseye's ears. "Not strangling," Rachel said, gray
eyes shining and not quite so tearful. "I want purple hair like the
kitty, Dad. Can I?"
Catseye thinks FlyingKitten would look nearly as nice as a cat if
she had purple hair, the cat praised, rewarding Rachel with loud
rumbling purrs for the scratching. Delicately she pawed at Rachel's
red locks. FlyingKitten already has Very Pretty hair. She gave
Rachel a smile- not exactly cat-like- and bumped her head against
Rachel's cheek. SoftHands would look very pretty with purple hair
like Catseye's
Nathan couldn't help a smile. "Maybe I should. Can get away with all
kinds of crazy things and blame it on the head injury, you know..."
