Phonecall, Marie and Christian

Backdated to yesterday morning. Marie feels obligated to let Christian know about his son.

Marie's face was still tearstained and blotchy as she stared at a slip of paper in her hand with a carefully copied number on it. Trembling slightly, she picked up the phone and dialed. Taking a deep breath as she heard the ringing start, Marie willed herself to stay calm.

"Hello?" The deep voice with the warm Scots burr could be no one other than Christian Kane, although the signal was thin. Obviously the man was currently at sea, part of his perpetual wanderings around the South Pacific.

"Mr. Kane, this is Marie D'Ancato. Ah'm...Ah'm not sure if you remember me," she said, her voice clear but obviously pained. She was quite sure Chrisitan Kane knew who she was. She also had no idea how to tell him what she had called to say. You couldn't rightly say "Sorry sir, your son's arm was found and that's the only part of him we can locate at the moment."

"Of course, from Xavier's." He said, the shushing sound of his accent buzzing over the transpacific transmission. "I have a feeling that this isn't entirely a social call, is it, Miss D'Ancato. Has something happened to Garrison?"

"Ah....Ah'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you. He's missing," she managed to get out before a tear rolled down her cheek and she stopped talking simply because she didn't want to go into hysterics on the phone with a man she'd met once.

"You wouldn't be calling me if Garrison was just missing, Miss D'Ancato." Kane said, although not unkindly. Christian had spent over four decades in the intelligence field, and could read people as easily as the pages of a newspaper. If Garrison had just disappeared, turned up missing, there would be a different reaction. Right now, his son was missing, and they must feel like they might have an answer as to his fate.

"Why don't you tell me what's happened to my son?"

Taking a deep breath, Marie wiped away the tears. She needed to be strong. "We don't know exactly. His car was found and the scene...well it wasn't pleasant. His blood, and the passengers' too..." she paused, knowing she had to keep going, but not wanting to. "Ah don't know any way to sugarcoat this. His arm was found at the scene."

"His arm..." Christian's voice trailed off slowly. After a moment, she could hear him put the phone back up to his ear. "Was this an accident, or do you know who was responsible?"

Swallowing hard before speaking, the contempt in her voice was clear as she named the known assailant. "Sabretooth. This was no accident. This was a planned, brutal attack by a member of the Brotherhood."

"I see." Once again, a long slience descended on the phone, and it was alomost a minute before the older Kane spoke again. There wasn't a tremour in his voice, but something behind it that was both old and angry. "Are there any leads on this brotherhood? You and your X-Men in pursuit?"

"We're trying. There are folks chasing down every lead we get...but it's not going so well. They've learned to cover their tracks better. He used a new team and we have no witnesses..." she drifted off, remembering the moment she'd first read Adrienne's post.

"Of course. I assume that you're doing everything that you can." Kane said softly into the phone. After a moment, his voice came back on the line. "Miss D'Ancato, I'd consider it a personal favour if you could keep me updated on the situation. Didi will send along a private number and e-mail that I can always be contacted on."

"Ah can promise you Ah'll let you know the moment we have anything solid," she said. "Ah hope the next time we speak, Ah have better news to share," she added.

"Thank you, Miss D'Ancato. I appreciate you calling me personally." A wall had dropped over the tone in his voice. Whatever had been there for a moment was gone, now hidden away. "We will speak again, soon."
