Nick and Yvette

Hearing that there was an injured student, Nick decides to make a visit.

Xavier's most recent transplant, Nick Gleason stood outside of the door to one of the female student rooms, suddenly feeling very self-conscious. It wasn't in his nature to go to the room of someone he'd never met, and he had turned around several times during his journey down the new hallway. The wildflowers he found in the forest earlier had taken most of the brunt, as they now were almost completely wilted in his clutched right fist. But he knew from recent experiences how much it sucked to be stuck in a bed after getting hurt, and knew that he owed it to his future classmate to at least come and visit. Breathing deeply, he banged several times with his free hand against the strange door and awaited a response.

"Come in!" came a girl's voice, marked with a definite Eastern European accent. Yvette was once again tucked up on the couch of the suite's communal living area, idly flipping through television channels and being bored. The thought of a visitor perked her right up.

Nick stuck his head in before going through all the way. He still wasn't even sure that he was in the right room, although if he had read the description of the injured student correctly, the accent was a huge clue. He forced a smile as he saw the girl on the couch. "Yvette?"

"Yes?" She tilted her head at him and smiled welcomingly. "You must be the new student, Nicholas." She beckoned him to come closer. "Please, come in. I am glad that you have come to visit."

"Yup, that's me." Nick forced out in a slightly squeaky voice as he walked forced his free hand into his pocket and stuck his chest out slightly. The nervousness of the young mutant was about as subtle as an elephant charging through a Best Buy. As he got forward, he thrust the remnants of flowers in his hand forward with a half smile. "These are for you." He felt even more awkward as he looked at their horrible state, his face slowly turning a bright shade of red. "I'm sorry to hear about your... injuries..."

"Thank you," she replied, smiling as she took the half-dead flowers, as if nothing was wrong. "I am getting better, at the least. And next time, I will be watching where I am standing." She waved at a arm chair nearby. "Please, to be sitting. Would you like the drink? There is plenty of juice."

Gleason hesitated as he slowly crossed the room to the chair. As he fell back, he held up his hand. "Thanks, but no thanks on the juice." A smile passed across his lips for a second as he tried to look natural in the chair, although he was still obviously uncomfortable in the new environment. "I know I probably should have sent a message before I dropped by, but I know how much of a bummer being injured can be, so I figured I could keep you company for a bit." He most certainly did. It was only a week ago that Nick was strapped down to a hospital bed.

"More juice for me, then," she replied with a small laugh. "My roommate, Angel, was being very generous when she stocked the fridge." She popped the abused wildflowers in her water glass so they'd perk up - someone could get a vase for her later. "And thank you, for the company. The start of the summer holidays is not such the good time to be getting hurt - everyone is having the plans and I do not want them to feel they have to be staying with me, even if it does get very dull." Settling into her cushions, with a blanket over her lap and her long brown hair spread over her shoulders and the white nightgown she wore, the small girl looked rather like a porcelain doll. "You are just arriving here, yes?"

"Yeah, I just got dropped off on Wednesday actually." As he leaned backwards in his chair, Nick crossed one of his legs over the other. "It seems like you're right. The excitement level since I've gotten here seems to be at a near boiling point." A chuckle rumbled from deep in his gut as he leaned forward. "I've been reading Shakespeare in my room everyday, or outside trying to chase down Catseye."

"I am glad she is having the new friend to play Chase with. It will be a while before I can again, and even then, my powers are making it difficult." Her face lit up at the mention of Shakespeare. "You are liking such plays to read? What is your favourite?"

"Taming of the Shrew actually. Maybe if you get extremely bored one night, I can come and read it to you. I know that it's put a lot of my friends to sleep when I try to talk to them." A smile grew across Nick's face as he tried to remember the happy moments from back home without the rush of others coming with them. "You mind telling me a little bit about your powers? I'm still new to this whole 'abilities' thing, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before school starts." He knew that it was better to shift attention than to try and fight with his own past demons.

"I would like that. There is the drama club, for us and the students in town - perhaps when we have another play, you would join us? We were doing the Midsummer's Night's Dream last time." The prospect of another Shakespeare fan her own age cheered her up greatly. "As for my powers... " She pointed at a photo sitting on one of the bookshelves, showing the first New Mutants trip. "That is me, the red spiky one, yes? My powers make my skin very hard and sharp, so I am cutting almost anything. When I was hurt, my powers would not let the doctors treat me properly, so Forge, he is making the inhibitor, to turn them off, since I cannot." She held up her wrist, the inhibitor device large and chunky on it.

Nick turned his head to be able to lock the inhibitor in the middle of his sight line. He nodded his head up and down, this type of thing was hard not to be impressed by. "I've heard a lot of people talk about this Forge guy. He seems pretty amazing. Maybe I can convince him to make me a shirt that doesn't tear apart every five seconds huh?" With a smile, he drug his gaze over to the picture Yvette had pointed out, noticing a few smiling faces that he had already met. "So what's it like with the team? Do you guys all get along?"

"He made me the body suit that is fixing itself - my skin is too sharp for the normal clothes and if I wear it, I can be touching things without hurting them. If you are talking to him, perhaps he could do something the same for you, whatever your powers are?" He didn't look sharp or dangerous, but neither did Kevin. "The team, it is fun. It is good, having the people with you who are learning with you as well. And we go out and do things, to help other people." She shrugged. "Sometimes we do not always get along, but that is not very often. We are all different people, yes? Not everyone can be liking each other all the time."

"I can imagine that living together can lead to some disagreements." An unconscious smile tugs at the corner of his lips. "My sister and I, we used to get along great all the time, but the older we got, we couldn't be around each other for more than a few hours without one of us wanting to rip the other's hair out..." His voice trailed off as the eyes of the young mutant also seemed to disappear into a faraway place. It only took him a few seconds to recover, and do one of the things Nick does best, switch the subject. "You said there was a drama club around here? If there's a theater around town that's still running maybe I can spring you from this place and take you to go see a play? Better than having to be cooped up, right?"

The distraction was noticed, but Yvette kept her silence about it - she recognized the signs of someone with a past they weren't comfortable with talking about. A common affliction in the mansion, it seemed. He'd open up eventually, the same way everyone else did. "There is the theater, yes. The doctors say I should not go anywhere for now, but next week, I should be more recovered. I would like very much to go to see something." A shy smile crossed her face. "Thank you to be asking."

Nick returned the smile. "You're very welcome." He leaned in a little bit closer. "There aren't that many of us theater nuts left out there. We have to stick together ya know?" With a wink, Gleason leaned back in his chair. "So besides theater, and getting yourself into trouble, what are some of the other things you like to do during these lazy summer nights?"

"I read, in the treehouse. Go exploring in the woods. I also help Kyle with the groundkeeping work. I like to be outside, when my powers are working especially. What about you? What things do you like to do?" He was relaxing, that was a good thing.
"I spend as much time as I can outside. There's nothing better than being able to feel fresh air rush into your lungs. Nothing else can be quite as special." Nick was surprised at how comfortable he was beginning to feel. Maybe it was because of the connection he had with the girl going through a traumatic experience at the same time he was. The boy devilishly cocked one eyebrow up as he continued. "Are you sure that Catseye and I can't sneak you out of here for a few hours so you can come in the woods with us?"

"It is tempting, but no. I will do what the doctors are saying - my new kidney was very hard to be getting and I do not want to be risking it." Now it was Yvette's turn to look faraway for a moment, thinking of the man the organ had come from, what had changed his mind. "But when the doctor is saying it is okay, then I would like very much to come out with you and Catseye."

The boy nodded his head. "It's a promise then." At saying the words, Gleason instantly became self conscious again, he hated making commitments to people because if you don't make commitments, you can never let them down. Slowly be began to rise to his feet. "Hey, I better go get some dinner. It always takes me a few hours to find the kitchen in this place, and I'm sure to be starved when I do find it. But you promise you won't mind if I come back and read a play with you later this week?"

"I promise I will not mind." If anything, Yvette's replying smile showed she was happy to make the promise. "It was very nice to be meeting you, Nicholas. I hope to be seeing you again soon, yes?"

As he makes his way to the door, Nick turned around a flashed another quick smile. "It was very nice to meet you too Yvette. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of each other." With that, the boy quickly pushed himself out of the door.
