Call of the Wild: The Mad Preacher

Nick veers from his path and comes across an odd scene.

Nicholas Gleason's lungs were burning. It felt like he had been running for days. He had let himself get out of shape. He continued to curse himself not only for that, but for letting himself get pulled off course. His plan was to run back to Wisconsin and start a new life. His last interaction with Julian had proven that he didn't really deserve to live with humans. He couldn't control himself. Maybe life as a wolf would be better for him. But he was suddenly diverted from his path by a familiar scent. One that he couldn't quite place, but one that he couldn't get out of his head.

The scent had lead him here, to the woods in the middle of Upstate New York. Although the place was secluded, Nick found himself stumbling onto a huge gathering of people. Although he couldn't see, they all were gathered around something in the center of a clearing. The boy tried to shove his nose in close enough to get a good smell of the whole situation as he let his ears perk up and listen.

"Furthermore," Father Risman continued, "what about our normal, blessedly human children?!" Several people in the crowd held up babies or young tots, which were a bit out of his range of influence but would be easy pickings in a few years. Children and teenagers were impressionable and he needed to ensure that his message reached them before that of the liberal, mutant loving elites. It was part of the reason he'd been called to his position as a youth pastor, until his recent termination.

"Are they really to go to school with the devil spawn, who seek to corupt their very souls? Who seek to lead them into the domain of satan?! Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you! The church of humanity has gone soft, infiltrated by mutant loving liberals whom would rather risk your spirit and salvation in order to keep themselves fat, fed and safe." His words had power behind him, righteousness that could only come from a true believer. Rightousness that could only come from the path of a true man doing God's work. "I...am not one of those men, my children. Father Matthew Risman isn't afraid to make himself an enemy of the mutant-loving, liberal elites who corrupt our children and damn them to hell. No, what happens here today will prove that if anything, this cause you are here today to support is the true path and work of the saints and of God himself, blessed be his name."

God, Mutant loving Liberals? Nick wasn't sure if it was still the remnants of his wolf-brain screaming from his earlier rush, or if this really didn't make sense. He had heard rumors about the Church of Humanity from his professors at school, but their agenda seemed like it was not even close to being easy on the mutant population. What did this man have in mind with his message? And that's when Nick's ear picked up something else. A subtle rustling coming from next to the man calling himself 'Father Risman'.

"Come from miles around children-of-men, share in the joy of this occasion, as we put to death the spawn of satan!" Risman grabbed the bag that rested over the head of the mutant boy and gave a firm tug, revealing his physical deformity to the crowded clearing. Gasps and blasphemies could be heard as the bound and gagged boy struggled to free himself from the bonds he himself had blessed. "And never forget that it is not through the Church of Humanity that you will find yourself saved but through my congregation- The Purifiers!"

Purifiers? Nick didn't like the sound of the name, but it was the boy that made his stomach turn. He fought with the notion of charging in full bore and trying to get to the mutant boy, but a quick survey of the crowd showed him that there was no chance of getting there without hurting a few of the bystanders. And judging from the bulks around the hips of Risman and a few of the others, there was no way to guarantee that he could get there without harm to the boy or himself either. He was trapped, and forced to look at the horrifying scene play out in front of him.
