Christmas Party Excerpt

Betsy and Kane talk during the Christmas party at Harry's.

"I was told the pretty purple haired telepath needed a new drink." Kane said, coming up to Betsy with a pint in one hand and what looked like a replacement gin for the one she'd just finished. "You seen her recently?”

Betsy assumed this was where she should have some kind of a witty response, but honestly she just couldn’t be arsed. She reached for the gin with a nod and a “thank you,” then continued her people watching. She did use her foot to nudge the other chair a bit closer to Kane. After all, this was a Christmas party and there was no reason to be churlish.

"I see the Christmas spirit is well and truly on fire here." Kane dropped into the chair next to her. "You want to talk about it, Braddock?"
“Not particularly. I received some bad news that have me worried about my brother,” Betsy shrugged. “This year has still treated me better than most of the people here,” she continued, waving her arm to indicate the X-Men scattered around the room, then lifted her eyebrow at her companion. “Present company included."

"Yeah, well..." Garrison said, taking a sip from his pint. "I'm still standing. Can't complain too much." He said wryly. "Anything we can help with that involves the bad news? Even if it is just five or six more of those?" He pointed to the gin.
Betsy cocked her head. “Why can’t you? Really, what would happen if you did?” She sipped her gin. “A few more of these would be nice, too."

"The way I look at it, the odds were stacked against me pretty hard and yet, I made it. Hits along the way can't matter that much if that's the case." Kane replied. "I call it optimistic pessimism. I think it's going to be the next big thing."

“I suppose that is a valid interpretation. Probably a pretty healthy one as far as I can tell, as long as you don’t forget that you deserve nice things as well,” Betsy nodded towards Kane’s pint which was emptying at a steady pace. “Like maybe another beer. I believe it is my round."

"I always need another beer. It's one of my notable qualities." Kane said, toasting her with his glass.

“Coming up. Same again?” Betsy waited for Kane to confirm, then downed the remaining gin and started making her way to the bar.
