Backdated Log: Liam and Arthur

Backdated to August 19. LIAM ARRIVES AT THE MANSION. And meets Arthur.

Pulling up to the Xavier's School in his dad's truck, Liam stared from the back seat. This was the furthest he'd ever been from home and this was definitely not Maine anymore! The well kept grounds were so fancy already, what was he even doing here?

"It looks nice," his mother commented, turning to look at him.

"Yeah," he agreed, wondering if he could go explore the grounds and climb the trees or if it was a 'stick to the proper paths' sort of place. He suspected the latter. That would suck. He'd never stayed on a path in the woods in his life.

Getting out, Liam headed around to unload his stuff from the truck bed automatically. They'd ordered a bunch of stuff from Target before leaving and had picked it up on the way, so in addition to his clothes and a few boxes of things, there were a ton of plastic Target bags. They'd even brought them out and loaded them in the car so he hadn't even gotten to go in the store. Not that he liked shopping, but that was a lot!

Suddenly, there was a man.

It wasn't exactly a jump scare, but more like the clouds suddenly parting to reveal a somewhat tall, pretty for television middle aged man wearing a tunic shirt, linen pants, and a gigantic smile. He held in his hands some brochures.

"Welcome, Nelson family!" He offered this enthusiastically, driving the point home that he was there for more than to just loom.

"Is this a cult?" he asked, side-eying the man and not moving from where he stood. "Why are you dressed like that?"

"William!" his mother hissed, stepping forward to offer her hand, "I'm Trisha, this is my husband Jeff, and of course, Liam," she introduced everyone.

His smile didn't budge. "I'm from California," he offered with the complete certainty that this explained everything. He took her hand happily, using the brochures as a prop to motion to the castle-like abode behind him. "Welcome to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Trishia and Jeff, I'm Arthur Centino and I have the pleasure of making sure Liam gets settled in and all of your questions are answered."

Oh. California. That probably did explain it then. Liam was still convinced that this Arthur guy was in a cult though. Maybe not currently, but at some point. Definitely.

"The information we were sent, helped a lot," Jeff answered, offering his hand as well, "We weren't planning to need to do college dorm shopping right this moment, but, at least it was the right time of year for it. And Liam will benefit meeting others like him."

Rolling his eyes, Liam released the tailgate on the truck and hefted his duffel bag. "Are you a mutant?" he asked, still dubious. Arthur looked perfectly normal to him. Just weird cult clothing.

Liam was offered a helping hand immediately. Somehow Arthur had managed to effortlessly deposit his brochures in Jeff's hands as he flowed to be right where he was needed.

"I am! You'll find that many of us associated with Xavier's Institute are, even if we don't look it." He winked.

"Huh," sure, he knew not all mutants looked like mutants, but he certainly did and he was the only mutant he knew. Well, now Arthur. Though Liam did give Arthur points for not blinking at his appearance. Most people stared a lot at first. He'd learned to ignore it.

"We have a number of mentors who are eager to meet Liam," Arthur added for the group's sake as he took a bag in hand, "But did you," and that was directed at Liam, "Have any particular questions? I could give you all the historical tour, or we could go straight to your room and hit the high tour points on the way."

"My room," Liam answered immediately, not caring about the history of the school or whatever. They won the football game in 1968, big whoop.

"Well..." Trisha finally nodded, "Alright. It's there any paperwork we need to fill out now that he's here? We did the online forms already."

"There's a few technical details to cover, but for that I'm going to leave you in the capable hands of Darcy Lewis." Arthur hefted the bag he had been given onto his shoulder, and made a follow me gesture with the other toward the family. "That is luckily on the way. How about we walk and talk?"

He was already a few steps ahead to really sell the implied momentum.

Following dutifully, Liam just stared as they entered the foyer with its massive double staircase. Okay, yes, he knew it was a big place, that this was technically a mansion before it was turned into a school. But still. It was huge! And... nice. Like, someone hired a decorator nice. He was very much not in Maine anymore.

His parents both gave him a hug as they followed a petite brunette into a set of offices and he continued to follow Arthur. His mom was already looking weepy. Ugh.

This caught Arthur's attention, and he dutifully deployed some distractionary exposition as Jeff and Trishia fully disappeared beyond a turn as the two of them headed down a grandiose hallway toward the dorms. "Darcy will also be hooking you up with some special communication gear later, including a phone and laptop."

More paintings, more mansion.

"Any of those things can be customized to be extra durable or easier to use as needed. Speaking of roommates, you'll be staying with another teen named Shatterstar! We don't have too many kids your age these days, but you'll meet a lot of adults who work with or for the Xavier Institute living here as well."

Named Shatterstar? What sort of name was that? "I thought this was a school?" he asked, "How come there aren't a ton of students?"

"Ah-ha! It used to be a school." In another universe. In another time. "The official paperwork says that we transitioned to being a residence for young mutants after the events of M-Day, and I imagine that the signs were all too nice to replace. Brand is key afterall."

"Oh," he remembered M-Day. He hadn't heard from his birth mother since then. Well, since her previous visit, but nothing since M-Day. He assumed she'd died, but he didn't understand why he didn't if he was a mutant like her? It didn't make sense. "I see. But you're still able to...I dunno. Creepy government suits showed up looking for me. You can make sure that they don't, here, right?"

"Residence and protection for young mutants! We have a lot of folks here who work to ensure that meddling government types can't."

Ah. That was...good? Bad? Good that they offered protection, bad that they needed it. "Yeah, apparently my birth mom knew Professor Xavier or something? She set it up that I would come here if needed, but I think she was expecting it when I was a baby, not now. She's gone now. But my mom remembered." She'd explained very carefully once the suits were gone about it all, that so much time had passed that they thought it safe, but then these things tended to happen when you least expected it. "I dunno why they'd want me though."

Arthur paused at this, framed directly in front of a picture of some founding fathers on a boat. "I am so sorry to hear about your mother, Liam."

He shrugged. How did he explain that she might actually be alive? He had no idea and had spent so many years thinking she was dead. It was kinda just... easier. "I mean, it's... whatever. I was adopted as a baby, it's not like she raised me. I know who my parents are and they're talking to that other lady."

The other man nodded at this in a very adult way that practically underlined that he was going to pack this away for further consideration later. Possibly in a cult meeting. "Darcy won't bite unless asked. Or bribed. She's also amazingly charming, so your folks are in good hands. "

".... Good to know?" Liam hadn't really thought to be worried about his parents, they were his parents. Sure, now that he was older he sometimes worried about them for various reasons, but in general that were pretty capable people. And he had no reason to think anything would happen. "Bribed? For what? How?"

"Ah, you're one of those literal boys. That'll make this more interesting."

They were at a suite door, and the thud of Liam's bag from Arthur's shoulder heavily indicated that they had reached their destination.

"I mean... that's important info to have if I'm going to bribe her," Liam pointed out, waiting for Arthur to unlock the door and hand him the key. Checking the number on the door, Liam made sure he memorized it.

There was a soft beep as the door lock engaged. "Fair! Miss Lewis is easily bribed by the extremely easy and very correct pointing out of her charm and skill. Most folks love compliments, but the very best bribes are the ones that are also true."

The door swung open to reveal the standard suite common area.

"So she's hot?" he hadn't really gotten a good look as she'd disappeared into another room with his parents. "Good to know." He stared into the room before going to look around, checking it all out. There was a closed door that he assumed lead to his suitemate's room, but the open one was clearly for him. Making a bee-line, he headed that way and dropped his stuff. The room was pretty cool!

Another phrase to pack away for further consideration.

There was a slump as Arthur placed the bags he had been hefting down near the door. "Welcome to Xavier's, officially, Liam. There's some introductory paperwork on your desk over there for some light, uneventful reading. You'll find that we've prepped the room already for your claws, but don't worry if anything breaks or isn't easy to use. Everyone's different, and you being comfy is incredibly important."

Another broad smile. "Do you have any other questions?"

They prepped the room for his claws? What did that mean? Was it like child proofing, cause that was uncool. He wasn't some toddler! "Uh, no?" was he supposed to? "I guess... are there like, meal times?" that was probably in the paper work. Hopefully with a map.

"That'll be on your phone and computer! All of the day to day details, including your class arrangements. Food's often grab as you want, though — we have a few residents who love making things for everyone, but you also have a kitchen right out there."

Arthur nodded toward the door. "I'd be happy to show you the food situation as we head back toward your parents. Darcy will also have your phone and tech for you."

Arthur: So correct about how easy it is to get Darcy on your good side.
