Kevin & Darcy | Long Missions
(Backdated) Kevin has a deep cover assignment for someone with Darcy's skills. In return, she asks him to come meet the most important person in her life - her Gran.
"I was wondering if you'd come home with me for a bit, if I asked you to."
Darcy didn't look up from her phone as she asked the question, just continued swiping her response to the person on the other end. She wasn't quite sprawled across the floor so much as she was tucked against the drawers of Kevin's desk and the side of his leg. Her question intruded on their companionable silence and seemed out of place. She didn't clarify the why, because Kevin would understand as he so frequently did when it came to her. "I don't know when, specifically, but it needs to be soon."
"You comfortable introducing me to your Gran? You know we'd run away together." Kevin said, tapping on his laptop. He got her unspoken ask, but as they worked, it had to be the cynical response.
"I would love to have the opportunity to introduce you to her. She'd have you eating out of her palm by sunset and dreaming of Vegas elopements."
Darcy's response was honest, but the follow-up was quiet. "I wish I had asked you to go with me over Christmas instead of staying at Marci's alone once Douglas said no." Hindsight was like that though. She tried not to have those sorts of regrets, but in this case... she wished she could turn back the clock and figure out a way home, even if there was no way she could've navigated the airport and flights alone while barely being cleared for occasional use of the stairs. It'd still been hard to manage all the travel with Maya in January, and she'd technically been cleared for everything but her hand by then. By the time they'd gotten to Scotland she'd been a pained mess, holding it together with sheer willpower and not wanting to be That Person during their travel.
"Is that what you need?" Kevin said and paused. "I have a deep cover assignment that I need someone I can trust for. Two or three months minimum. If you can do that, I can come out and meet your Gran while you prep for it."
"There are other people in the shop better suited for that," she points out logically, finally looking up from her texts with a raised eyebrow. It's not a no, but it is curiosity about his reasoning for offering it to her.
Darcy knows what she's good at and she masks like a pro, but she doesn't always slip into the background like she's always been there as easily as some of the others.
She can.
People still think she's a bubble-brained idiot despite the dual-major and the law degree, so obviously she's got dumb college kid and trophy wife down. Borrow some of Jane's personality and fashion sense and she can pass as the sort of professor that's obsessed with their life's work and not much else. But she has to go pretty hard method into the role, bad habits and all. It's easy to go wrong when you get too deep into a role. There are plenty of cautionary tales about the horrors of going too method.
"Perhaps. But this one in specific involves a range of skills... ones that your powers help with and others that I trained you for." Kevin said mildly. "And I trust you. Especially to keep it together with a couple of months away from the mansion or the ranch."
"Being away from the Ranch that long will suck for my private island fund, and I'll miss the scant time I might get with Inez." She shrugs lightly. "I've already told Sharon to come get her children and keep them permanently, so there's nothing left in the mansion that I'm responsible for the care and feeding of either. You're the major part of being here that I'll miss, and I think you've probably got a plan for that. Tell me about the mission."
His leg is warm against her spine, and she tips her head back, crown resting against the side of his knee. It looks much less comfortable than it is, although she's considered stocking a floor pillow in his office. If she goes on this mission, that will be a thought for... closer to the end of the year. She drops her phone on the floor next to her thigh, letting Kevin's voice wash over her as he talks shop.
