Angelo and Rahne

They sit around in the rec room and talk about the animal shelter and their plans for the summer.

Angelo wandered into the rec room for a little afternoon vegging, and immediately spotted Rahne curled up on one of the armchairs. Smiling, he called out a greeting as he moved further into the room.

Rahne looked up from her book and waved slightly. "Hi, Angelo."

Angelo settled into a free chair. "What's up?"

"Oh... homework's done. Reading. ...I was talking to Nathan earlier and he reminded me, maybe now things have settled for a wee bit we can get over to the animal shelters sometime."

Angelo grinned. "Really? That'd be great. An' yeah, here's hopin' things stay settled for awhile."

"Me too," Rahne said sincerely. "I think we're all right for fostering a few pets, but ye might want to go talk to the professor if ye're thinking of getting a big dog to keep, just to be sure."

He nodded. "Yeah, I'll mail him or stop by his office sometime. Who else's gettin' an animal?"

"Good question. I'm thinking Miles would really like one... Marie and Shinobi had both talked about it, but I'd say they willna be keeping them here."

"No, they'd probably be takin' them back to where they are, if they came to get one. Miles'd love one - somethin' small an' furry."

"He likes small and not so furry well enough too," Rahne said in amusement, "but aye, I think so."

Angelo laughed. "Well, yeah, but I'm not sure how Alison'd take to more bugs showin' up in her room. She seems t'be okay with Frank the lizard these days, though..."

"No more screeching." Rahne grinned. "I can say for sure that none of the shelters I talked to have got any iguanas or cicadas at the moment. At least, not that they're looking after. I wouldna rule out the cicadas coming in on their own."

"Think they might've started to go away, now, actually. They don't usually hang around that long, do they?"

"They're getting quieter," she agreed. "And Doug says they're not bothering him as much even taking the white-noise into account."

Angelo nodded. "Which has gotta be good. Poor Doug, must've been drivin' him crazy before we figured out what it was, 'specially with finals at the same time."

"It really was. And Marie-Ange by proxy."

"Yeah, 'course. Still, all settled now an' he'll know what t'do if he ever comes up against a brood again."

"I've made a note to myself to send him an anti-cicada card in early 2021."

Angelo laughed. "Good idea. How've you been, anyway?"

"Pretty well. Keeping up with things, trying to placate Askani with oatmeal and warm milk. You?"

"Oh, this an' that. Nathan's language classes, an' Alison's Askani music project. Mostly just relaxin' after finals other than that, though."

Rahne nodded. "'Tis a good thing to do while we've got the chance."

Angelo smiled. "That it is. 's nice to have some time to breathe."

"*Very.*"

"You got any plans for the summer, other than the school activities?"

"Not so much, besides trying to get the shelter visits going, reading a bit more for fun, that sort of thing. Maybe visit home, but only if I find a good bargain on the flight. 'Tis an awful lot else."

"Could ask if you could go back in the Blackbird, if Dr. McTaggart is goin' back to Muir at some point", he suggested.

She smiled. "That'd be best, likely, if nobody minded the side trip. Good idea."

He smiled back. "When's the last time you got to go home?"

"Ah... for a bit when we did visit Muir last."

"'s been quite a while, then. You miss it?"

"Aye. I write back to Reverend Craig quite a lot though."

Angelo smiled. "That's nice. He's the guy that raised you?"

"Aye."

"Hope you get to go back, then. My mom should be comin' over to this coast for good, pretty soon..."

"Och, ye *will* be glad of that, I know."

"Yeah, it'll be a relief t'have her out of LA. Means I won't have to worry about goin' back to see her anymore, not to mention it'll be easier."

She nodded again. "All around."

"Yeah, with the travellin', which she can't really afford anyway, 'less the Professor pays for it, an' that... we don't wanna do that. 'cept for emergencies. Be much easier when she's in NYC."

"I'd think so."

Angelo grinned. "Anyway. Mind if I see what's on the TV?"

"Go ahead. I probably willna notice much while I'm reading, but doona mind it if I decide to take the book outside. I've been half thinking of it but not bothered to move yet."

He chuckled, switching on the TV and starting to channel-flick in search of something to watch. "It's a nice day - definitely worth goin' outside if you can be bothered."
