Asgard - Wednesday afternoon
How it all starts. Amanda's up to bat, Jubilee's pitching, and of course there's snark, leading to a certain amount of cheating and unfortunate consequences.
Hefting the unfamiliar bat, Amanda made her way to the spot she'd been watching other people bat from. She tugged the baseball cap she'd borrowed from Angelo further down over her eyes - it was _bright_ outside, the summer sun beaming down on the field. Jubilee was watching her from the pitcher's mound, a distinctly predatory look on her face, mixed with impatience, and Amanda belatedly realised she needed to put the bat on her shoulder.
"Right," she said. "Let's be havin' you, Lee."
Jubilee curled her lip as she held the ball in her glove, standing sideways on the pitcher's mound. Usually she'd go fairly easy on someone who hadn't played before but this was Amanda. There was only so much mercy Jubilee had in her heart for an enemy, after all.
She grinned ferally at the younger girl and prepared to send a fastball speeding directly at mid-level height, it'd be a strike if Amanda didn't hit it.
"It'd take more then you've got to have me, Mandy." she said deliberately, emphasising the new nickname she'd decided to give Amanda.
Amanda opened her mouth to retort, but as she did, Jubilee pitched the ball at a speed that was almost frightening if you were on the other end of it. She swung, missing it completely.
"Strike one!" came the call from Alison behind her.
"Bloody buggery fuck," Amanda muttered, and shot a glare at Jubilee. "Just warmin' up," she said, flexing her shoulders before stepping up to the plate again. "An' I can take whatever you got, Lee."
Jubilee caught the ball in her glove, running her hand over it as she studied Amanda. She knew the girl would be expecting another fast ball, which was why she was going to give her a curve ball.
"Sure ya can, Mandy. That's why ya hittin' these balls all over the place, right? Oh, wait, that's right, ya ain't even gotten close yet. Here, I'll give ya a slow one, just for you. Should be easy as pie to hit."
"I'll hit _you_ in a bloody minute if you don't stop callin' me that," Amanda growled between clenched teeth. She planted her feet (encased in the faithful Docs, since she'd been told bare feet weren't allowed in the game due to accidents) and hefted the bat over her shoulder again, determined to not let Jubilee distract her this time. "Let's go, Lee. Ain't got all day."
Jubilee grinned, pushing the baseball cap she'd put on further back on her head and rubbing the ball against her jean encased leg. She'd put on her scruffiest clothes for the game, not wanting to get her better stuff dirty. It made for an interesting look with faded denim jeans and a bright yellow starburst t-shirt.
"But you're such a Mandy, why would I ever want to call you anything else... Mandy."
With that, Jubilee launched her curve ball.
Fiercely, Amanda swung at it, missing again and nearly falling over from the force of her attempted hit. The ball had swung around unexpectedly, like a googly in cricket, only sideways in the air and not bouncing off the ground.
"Strike two!"
"If I ever hit this bloody thing, I'll be sending it straight back at you, you bloody cow," she fumed, ineffectively, she knew, since it was unlikely she was going to hit anything at this rate. Wiping her sweaty palms against her cotton bike shorts - a wonderful discovery, since they went to mid-thigh, covered the scars on her legs, and didn't ride up - before taking a deep breath and regaining her calm. Manuel's amusement - and the lust he was sending down the link every time she bent over - wasn't helping. 'Well, if I can't do this the proper way, time for a bit of help,' she thought to herself, and concentrated briefly on a particular spell she'd learnt from Strange, but hadn't had reason to try. An augmentation spell, enhancing the natural attributes and purpose of an object. It took a lot of power, but it wasn't like she was intending on doing any other spells that day...
The bat glowed ever-so-faintly white as she put it over her shoulder again and stepped up to the plate. "Third time lucky, eh, Lee?" she said with a mocking grin.
Jubilee eyed her opponent suspiciously, Amanda was way too happy after that last miss. It was time to end this, as with Amanda struck out it would be time for her team to be at bat. Considering Jubilee's pitching arm was starting to get tired, she really needed the break that would bring.
"Not while I'm still breathin' it won't be," she shouted back. Winding up, she launched another fast ball, swearing as she realised she'd aimed a little too high and had sent it straight at Amanda's head.
"Ball!"
Amanda ducked and the ball shot over her head. "Bloody fuckin' hell, you tryin' t' kill me?" she demanded, dropping the bat and advancing a couple of steps before realising punching out the pitcher was probably not in the rules. Very possibly, at least. After all, this was an American game, not an Australian one.
Jubilee had brought her own hands up and had dropped into a defensive stance when she saw Amanda starting toward her.
"Just try it, Mandy. I could whip your ass all over this field. Now we gonna play ball or are you gonna be a big girl about one little foul ball? Dude, it like, didn't even graze you." Had it been anyone else, Jubilee probably would have apologised and made sure they were okay, Amanda however was different.
"Fine, we're playin'. But if you take another shot like that an' I don't give a fuck about the rules, yer goin' down." Ignoring the significant looks from a number of people, both on the field and off, Amanda picked up the bat again. "Let's go, little girl."
Jubilee raised an eyebrow but took up her sideways stance again. As much as Amanda annoyed her, she really wasn't going to start something in the middle of a crowd of teachers and students. She'd probably end up in detention for a month. Taking a deep breath, she glared at Amanda as she stood at the ready at bat.
"Take this, Mandy."
She launched another fast ball, this one going directly down the line.
Eyes narrowed, Amanda swung at the ball, feeling the spell's power tingling through the palms of her hands. The bat connected with a satisfyingly solid CRACK, and the ball went sailing into the sky. There was the flash of Illyana opening a stepping disk to go after it, only the circle of light expanded, covering the whole field and part of the bleachers.
When it winked out, the field was empty.
Apologies for the late posting - this one goes before all the rest.

Hijacked stepping disc!
