Angelo and Jamie
After Angelo and Illyana's spat on the journals, he runs into Jamie in the library, and they talk about... Illyana, mostly (and Jamie's taste in television). With a detour at the end onto the pranking potential of the internal combustion engine.
Abandoning the argument with Illyana on grounds of pointlessness, Angelo headed for the library to do homework that had nothing whatever to do with religion - First Aid would do nicely. So off he went for a wander through the stacks in search of the books Cecilia had set them to read.
Jamie looked up from a book on car engines as Angelo sat down across the aisle. "How's it going?"
Angelo blinked in slight surprise, having somehow failed to notice Jamie was there, then smiled slightly. "Not too bad."
"Kind of a rough day on the journals, though, huh? Tried going and looking for Rahne earlier to see how she was feeling, but I couldn't find her--she got _really_ good at keeping low in Asgard."
"Rough couple of days, really", Angelo answered quietly. "All kicked off yesterday. But I've talked to Rahne - over e-mail - an' Paul. An' I think Paul an' Nathan have the right idea about how to think about it all."
"That you have to move forward?" Jamie shrugged. "I think it's whatever works for you, pretty much. And that everybody needs to take a step back sometimes." He snorted. "I swear, the histrionics around here."
Angelo shrugged. "It's a sensitive subject for a lot of us", he replied neutrally. "Not just religion - that's just the aspect of it Illyana picked out, but I don't think Ms. Braddock meant it in a religious way. The whole atonement thing."
Jamie nodded. "I can understand. Seems like there's a lot of sensitive subjects around here, sometimes, though." He cocked an eye at Angelo. "I'm pretty sure Christianity is one for 'Yana, for example. Doubt she got a fair and balanced description from it out of the demons, you know? I mean, for one thing, she was lumping you in with Rahne there, as if it's all one church."
Angelo nodded. "Yeah, I guess. Didn't seem like she posted that 'cause she was upset, though, not with what she said to Mr. Wisdom lower down the thread."
"Well, she's got a screwy sense of humor, too. And c'mon, you were both going over the top there. I mean, here she was:" Jamie bugged out his eyes. "Heathens! Heathens! Aaaaall of you are silly HEATHENS! And here's you:" He screwed up his face into a glower and pitched his voice low. "Keep pissing people off, and you might . . . just . . . end . . . up . . . DEAD!" Jamie snickered. "I mean, be fair, all the two of you needed were a couple angsty soliloquys, an intricate revenge scheme, and a little kid you want to hit with a shovel, and bang, you're on the set of 'Passions.'"
Angelo couldn't help laughing. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Put it down to a personality clash? She doesn't like me, I don't really like her, it was a touchy subject anyway... An' since when do you watch 'Passions'?"
"I, um." Jamie looked a little panicky around the eyes. "Well, see, there was this week a few years ago where our satellite TV went out at the farm, so we were down to broadcast stations, and I always had one more dupe around than I needed, so I ended up watching TV, and it was a choice between 'Passions,' 'Yu-Gi-Oh,' and an infomercial about beets. There are some choices no man should ever have to make." He narrowed his eyes suddenly. "Since when do _you_ watch 'Passions?'"
Angelo looked smug. "I don't. You mentioned it."
"Damn. We must never speak of this again." Jamie grinned. "Seriously, though, 'Yana can be prickly, but she's really not as horrible as she thinks she is. She's still trying to figure out how to do social interaction that isn't based on the fight-or-flight response, I think."
Angelo shrugged, a little uncomfortably. "Yeah, I guess she would be. But the few times we've talked haven't exactly gone the best in the world. She thinks I'm morally bankrupt for bein' friends with Sarah, I think was how she put it."
"Huh." Jamie cocked his head thoughtfully. "Wonder what she was covering up with that remark."
Angelo looked confused. "How d'you mean? Why'd she be coverin' anythin' up with it? 's 'cause of what Sarah did."
Jamie nodded. "Sure, on the face of it. But one thing I've noticed about 'Yana--the louder she says one thing, the louder she _isn't_ saying something else." He shrugged. "I never can figure out what she's not saying, and it doesn't matter too much--either she''ll tell me or she won't, or she'll tell Kitty or she won't, it's not gonna make a difference how we get along, but when she gets pissed off, there's generally more than just the top layer to it. Might make it easier, you think, if the next time she goes off you remember it isn't just you she's mad at?"
Angelo nodded thoughtfully, filing that away for later. "It might. I'll try an' remember. You spend a fair bit of time with her, huh?"
"Yeah, some. We're pretty good friends--she's a lot of fun when she's not all riled up, and she's basically a good person." He chuckled. "Whether she believes it or not. I, in fact, have made her laugh. More than once." He shrugged. "I just don't push her places she doesn't want to go, is all. I let her be herself, and see what kind of common ground that gets us." He smiled. "And there's a lot to admire about her, y'know. I mean, damn, imagine how strong she has to be, coming out of all that still on her feet and fighting. And she'll go to the wall for the people she does care about."
Angelo nodded again, agreeing with that part unhesitatingly. "Yeah, that's true. Both - I remember the warehouse. But I just... I dunno. Can't get on with everyone, I guess, an' maybe there's too much of a clash there."
Jamie waved an acknowledging hand. "I'm not saying be her new best friend, or anything. Or her friend period. But she is one of mine." He grinned. "And I figured maybe you were a little curious about why, after a dose of that sandpaper-covered baseball bat she uses for a tongue this afternoon."
Angelo grinned wryly. "Well, I did wonder a little bit. But hey, I'm not exactly gonna say nobody in the house should be her friend, any more than you're sayin' I should be. Don't hate her, I just... don't like her."
Jamie nodded. "Yeah, I know that one all right. Enough people in this house from enough different backgrounds there's bound to be some personality conflicts."
Angelo nodded back, relaxing. "Yeah, exactly. So what's that you're readin'?"
Jamie flipped up the book cover. "Just some extra stuff for Mr. Summers's engineering class. There's a guy who's gonna regret letting me near a socket set one of these days."
Angelo chuckled. "What're you plannin'?"
"Oh, nothing in specific." Jamie grinned. "But you never can tell. The whole world of the internal combustion engine is open to me now."

The real question is, what does Illyana-in-your-head think of it? ;)
