Rising Waters: Yvette and Terry
Whilst the boys are getting themselves into trouble, Yvette is checking in after her day's work.
"These need to go to the medical team. See if they can use your help, if not, come on back," Terry told one of her volunteers, speaking very clearly, holding onto the box she was giving him until she saw the comprehension on his face. She trusted him, but they'd been working a long day and being tired made people careless. Alone in the tent for a moment, rain drumming on the roof, Terry sighed and rolled her shoulders. By her watch, the day group should be headed in, they'd need to be directed to food and shelter for rest, reports taken as necessary. And they'd all have to be accounted for. It was so easy for someone to go missing and it was far from safe out there.
A quiet sound behind her made Terry firm her shoulders and put her game face back on. She had a lot more to do today. Her shift wasn't nearly done. She turned to meet the incoming volunteer.
Yvette was covered in mud, water and dirt sliding off her hardened skin and caking her body suit, and her shoulders were drooping a little with weariness. But her eyes were glowing a cheerful bright blue and she gave Terry a wave as she came in. "Hello, Miss Terry! You are the welcome committe, yes?"
"Just Terry is fine, Yvette. Welcome back. How's it going out there?" Terry marked Yvette's name on her list, making a notation beside it. "There'll be food over in the school gym," the only building on campus that had stayed above the water line, set as it was on a hill. The rest of the Red Cross's set up was based around it in a rough semi-circle. "tea and coffee and stuff too."
"It is very wet. And there are very many trees falling down. They were asking me to be helping clear the roads." Yvette resisted the urge to shake her hair like a dog, knowing the stiff spikes of it were clotted with mud and dead leaves. "I think perhaps I am needing to wash first," she said wryly. "It is messy, also."
Terry smiled, "I can see that. Showers are in the gym too though there's gonna be a bit of a wait and I can't guarantee any hot water." She'd have killed for a shower herself. Or a cup of tea. Something warm to combat the chill of waiting around in the tent while everyone else did the real work. "Everyone still okay out there? I heard that we had some people going swimming there for a minute."
"I am not so sure - they are keeping me away from the water because I cannot swim so well. My powers, they make me too heavy." No hot water wouldn't bother Yvette, not with her lack of sensitivity. "But I think Kevin and Tatiana will be along soon."
"Oh good, I've got some information for them." Terry looked around, absently, like she was trying to remember something just out of reach. "Is there anything else out there that I need to know? Any supplies you guys need?"
Yvette shook her head. "I do not think so..." Then she remembered her manners. "Is there anything you are needing? You seem to have been busy here."
"No, I'm good, just got to keep on top of all these things. Shift changes are always a little mad in these sorts of situations. You go in and rest. We're not out of this yet." Terry smiled, "Nice job out there, Yvette."
Glowing blue eyes brightened. "Thank you, mi... Terry."
