Genosha: The Dawn of Liberation: Meeting the Executive
Following the battle and medical attention, several members of Xavier meet with what remains of the Genoshan leadership.
Okim Etufumwu turned over the metal head in his hands, over and over, looking for a trace of humanity in the ruined features. Instead of the man, all he could see was the perversion of the machine and the mutant in it. Finally, he put the head down on the desk that was serving as the temporary executive offices lower down in the Citadel, beside the stacks of files and notes. Across from him, Dr. Sasha Ryan sat at a second desk, but her expression was far less sanguine. Through-out the office, various senior members of Xavier's sat, X-Men and X-Force and X-Factor, all there at the request of the woman.
"Mister President, I-"
"Okim, Dr. Ryan. I am far removed from the office and indeed, the living to stand on ceremony." He said, and Ryan once again flushed. She had been in the early stages of her political career, barely thirty, when she had heard the news of their President's death and mourned it with the rest of the nation.
"Yes… sir. I've contacted a number of constitutional lawyers but things are confused. The articles of succession are completed confused."
"I have contacted all parties in the Assembly and discussed the situation. They have agreed that new elections will be held six months from now. They have passed articles to grant us the ability to create a caretaker government for now, while we review what has happened.
"That is a relief, Sir. With you back as Acting President-"
"No, Doctor Ryan. The leadership agreed to hold to the original succession, which makes the interim President you."
"Sir, you'd be much better suited."
"No. You know what has happened here, Dr. Ryan. We need you to unravel the corruption, see just how far it has spread, and make sure that the guilty are punished. Under the scrutiny of the world. I have also petitioned the UN to send election overseers and human rights officials to make sure that this is done transparently." Okim said, leaning back. "Who is left?"
"Chief Anderson has taken on reviewing all the GDF officers and is ferreting out those who have been working with Moreau to subvert the rest of the government. Quite a number of appointed Deputy Ministers and business leaders have disappeared in the last six hours. We think they saw the writing on the wall."
"Good. That makes it a little easier. The Commission?"
"The remaining four members were on the top floor when Moreau destroyed them. They are all dead." Ryan stopped, stunned by the idea. "What will we do without them?"
"Grow. Move on and build a better system." Okim said, and turned to the Xavier's types. "And now, how to possibly repay you all. We owe you a thanks which we can't possibly live up to and a debt which we can never hope to repay."
"You got dat right, home." Remy said, but didn't say anything further.
"Maybe we can make a start." Dr. Ryan said. "We've ordered a purge of all the information that Genosha has accumulated about Xavier's and you all. All of it. Officially, your identities will never be known, and the few surviving people which do know more understand that you've saved this country at great personal cost. It's the least we can do."
Scott crossed his arm and looked directly at the two Genoshans, "So what happens now? You still have a lot of people trapped at Mutates, what exactly do you plan to do with them? Some of them aren't even Genoshan citizens." he asked in a cold voice. He knew that these two were doing their level best to right the wrongs done by their country and it wasn't their fault, but still to kidnap people from all over the world to turn them into slaves. It beggared belief that anyone would even try to get away with it.
Sasha Ryan - now President Ryan took a deep breath. "All mutates will be immediately reversed back to their original personalities, and any from outside of Genosha will be repatriated with compensation. We'll turn over those involved in the kidnapping, and do our best to make right what has happened."
""Something dat Remy not getting." The Cajun said. "Moreau won de Presidency in, what, 1998? Over four years later, dey fake you death and jail you secretly, so day only a few members of de GDF know dat it's you. Why?"
"The reason my death was faked was that the Moreau's realized that I represented the biggest danger to their plans. After I had stepped down from the Presidency and Moreau assumed his first term, I spoke privately about a private bill that I was pushing to call for an end for the separate mutant system. I had believe that we had reached the point that our system of testing would prevent the kind of accidental deaths that had been the reason for it under my first term. With my influence, it would have passed, and destroyed Moreau's plans."
Jean stared at the woman and the small contingent of people, leaning her chin on steepled hands. "So what happens now? There are other mutants other than our people, hundreds, who are still mutates. They haven't been reverted back yet. Not to mention those who were taken from outside of the country to be experimented on," she said. She knew there were many steps that needed to be taken and it would be awhile before Genosha could climb its way out of the darkness that the Moreau brothers had put them into but for those people to go another minute longer still mindless drones unnerved her. People had to wonder where their loved ones were.
She paused and went on. "As for internally, we will immediately remove the mandatory aspect of mutant service but extend all of our financial commitments for at least a year while we try to determine how to move forward. Suffice to say, the economic slavery will never stand again. Maybe there's a balance we can achieve."
"Our people's possessions", Kurt spoke up. "The clothes and other personal effects that were taken from them on capture. They will be returned, if they are still safely stored in what remains of the Citadel?"
President Ryan looked thoughtful. "The clothes and personal effects of the people taken at the embassy were lost during the teleportation process. But the possessions of the people captured during the attack might still be there. The damage is extensive and we are not sure of what is still intact. I will have someone look into it immediately." She penned a quick note and handed it to one of the aides present with a quick order.
Lorna stood watching and listening to the new President setting right the wrongs that occurred. She had nothing to say really only "Let's go home."
"We should give you a parade. But, hundreds of Magistrates who were innocent of anything but being lied to died here. This government failed it's people on every level and we need whatever is left to try and make up for it. What we can offer you are our deepest apologies and make sure you all get home safe."
