Sam and Jessie | Green, Red, and Rainbow Flags

Sam talks to Jessie about his idea to lovingly gaslight his sister. Direct follow up to- this. [backdated to 11. September. 2024]

Sam rocked back and forth on his heels in front of the door. This feeling like a brother and not a dad, and in his twenties rather than pushing forty thing was great. He felt energetic. Buzzed even.

"Hey Jessie? It's Sam- so back in June you said you had a whole buncha pride flags? You still got some-a those? I just found out my sister can't recognize flags and I have the funniest idea-"

The door flew open, revealing a shockingly blonde Jessie who had clearly just woken up from a nap. "Can't recognize flags? Do I need to get my powerpoint?" She looked absolutely thrilled at the idea.

“Someone gave her a lesbian flag and she thought it was the bi one and had it hangin’ up.” Sam grinned. “I figure I can mess with her before she remembers to look ‘em up.”

Jessie beamed. "I love this even more than I love my powerpoint. Come in, come in."

She ran to the closet where she kept her box of extra Pride flags, dragging it out and popping the top off. "Okay, she probably knows rainbow because everyone knows rainbow, so that's out. Trans is also fairly popular, so let's put that one aside." She was digging through the box as she spoke. "Keep a bi one off to the side for the end of all this when she may or may not trust that she's actually being given the right flag. And..."

She pulled out a few more flags of varying colors, setting them on the couch as she spoke. "Let's see I've got aro, ace, genderfluid, pansexuality, genderqueer, nonbinary, polysexual... Honestly you could keep this up for weeks. Especially if you tell her I gave you the flag and assured you it's bi for real this time because obviously I'm an expert."

"I told her she had the wrong one while she was studyin' so I've got at least a week 'fore she remembers to google anything." Sam grinned. "She definitely knows the trans flag, that-" He chose not to talk about Julia, it felt....wrong when he'd hardly known her. "I know she knows that one. I figure I could probably convince her the one fer gay men is the bi one."

"Gay men, gay men, gay men..." Jessie hummed as she searched. "Got it!" She pulled out the flag victoriously. "It's not one I keep much in stock, but I like to have at least one of everything for emergencies."

"Yer a fuckin' gem Jessie." Sam said earnestly. "I ain't been able to get one over on Paigey since we was kids, this is gonna be great."

Jessie beamed. "Let me know if you need any help convincing her. I'll totally back you up."

Sam grinned. "It's really her own fault fer not readin' the Trevor Project links I sent her months ago."

I love these quick, playful slice-of-life logs. It really adds texture to the characters.
