Midmorning, Sean and Terry
Sean and Terry get into a shouting match on the lawn and pull no punches. Some of this can be heard from pretty much anywhere on the grounds and it's all unpleasant. At least they're consistent.
Sean had collapsed into an exhausted sleep as soon as he got in. But after eight hours sleep, and a large mug of tea, he was feeling a lot more like himself. Right up until he started checking back on the computer system, starting just after he'd left. Ten minutes in, and he was out of the door looking for Terry.
After checking her room, and a fruitless search through the house, he was flying over the grounds when he spotted her. He cut his power out and dropped the last ten feet, landing just in front of her with a heavy thud.
"How could yeh?" he demanded. "Yeh're here to learn, not go running off with terrorists and mass bloody murderers!"
Terry had a moment to be pleased to see him back before the shouting began. "Are yeh honestly scolding me for something that happened five months ago, Sean Cassidy?" she shouted right back Where have you bloody been then that yeh think yeh have the right? Yeh said yeh'd be back in a couple of weeks not five bloody months! But not a word did I get. I had to beg Scott for yer whereabouts because yeh couldn't be bothered but yeh thing yeh can yell at me? I did a damn good job in Vegas!"
"I never bloody intended to leave yeh in the dark! The stupid bastard who talked me into it decided not to tell anyone after I'd gone. And yes, I think I can yell at yeh, if yeh're stupid enough to go running off at the drop of a hat with scum like those two!" Sean's voice rose in response to his daughter's shouts.
"Which scum would yeh be talking about then? Wanda and Haroun? Ah, no, yer all bollixed up over Remy and Nathan, aren't yeh? I'd like to know how a carefully planned mission with four well-trained adults is the same as running off at the drop of a hat! That's a mighty big hat to drop!" Terry shook her head violently, sending her red hair flying. "I'll not apologise for doing what needed being done. At least I had some experience, unlike half the crew."
Later, he'd admit to himself that she had a point. But not now. Right now, all Sean could think was "if something had gone wrong..." Right now, it was all he could do to keep his voice pitched at a shout. "Of course it's those two. They shouldn't even be at the bloody school, never mind draggin' children off into places like that. And don't you go reminding me about your 'experience'. Just because my shite of a cousin didn't have the common fuckin' decency to see to a proper upbringing for a child he stole doesn't mean you should be dashing off and risking getting killed!"
"Yeh have no place to be saying that! Nathan's not even married and he's already a better husband and father than yeh are! At least he's here!" Too far but she didn't care. "I wouldn't trade my life with Uncle Tom for a thousand years of 'proper' upbringing! He cared about me, took care of me when yeh didn't even know I existed! I don't care whose fault that is or if he stole me. If yeh hadn't left my mother he'd never have had a chance!" She turned away and screamed, too upset to control her power. A chunk of lawn ripped up and a tree shattered. She stared at it for a second then whirled back, glaring at him like it was his fault. "Now I'll be hearing it from Mr. Marko."
"No, yeh've never cared whose fault it was, have yeh? Never given a damn that I didn't want to be away. Never given a damn that we were cheated of each other, before I ever had a chance!" Sean's voice rose still further, echoing around the grounds. "Yeh'd rather take the side of the bastard that tore our family apart, wouldn't yeh? It's easier than admitting your old man might be human, isn't it?"
"It doesn't matter want yeh wanted! I used to want parents--a mother who wasn't dead and a father who cared I was alive! But wanting it didn't change anything! Instead I had an uncle who did care. Who took care of me and sent me to the best schools and got me lessons because I loved music. Who was there when I was sick or scared! That's worth more than all yer wanting!" Terry was getting a headache. She pressed the palms of her hands to her temples and clenched her eyes shut. "Uncle Tom didn't tear our family apart. He is my family. Yeh tore my family apart."
"Damn you, Theresa Cassidy!" Sean's last vestiges of control slipped, and the words came out loud enough to shake the air for hundreds of yards around. "I've had enough of being blamed by you for your fucking uncle's crimes! Yeh can think what you like about who your family is, but I am your father, and I swear to god, I'll dog you every day of your life if I have to until I can make you see what that bastard did. I'm not going to lose me own daughter to Black fucking Tom!"
Had Terry been anyone else her ears would be bleeding from the assault but she was, after all, her father's daughter. She cringed but it went against her nature to back down. "Yeh don't understand! Yeh never have!" Her own shrieks ripped the air, "I don't want yeh! I don't want yeh in my life! Not because of Uncle Tom but because yeh mean nothing to me!" Go away and leave me alone. she thought wearily as she shook with emotion, I'm tired of getting my hopes up.
Sean knew this was getting out of hand. He had to reign it in. With some effort, he brought his voice back under control, and hissed through gritted teeth "Well that's your tough bloody luck. Yeh wanted a father who cared you're alive, and now yeh've got one and he won't go away just because yeh've changed your mind."
"Yeh say that now," she muttered, "but yeh'll go away again." She jerked her chin up to glare at him, "If yeh won't go away, Sean Cassidy, yeh'll still find yerself alone. I'll have nothing to do with yeh. I grew up without yeh and that's how I'll stay."
Sean actually managed a calm tone. "We'll see about that. I've got the rest of my life, Theresa, and I'm done with lettin' you drive me away with all the spite Black Tom poured in your ears. We'll see."
"Yeh don't understand." Terry was still far from calm though she'd stopped shouting when he had. "Yeh think I don't like yeh because of Uncle Tom but that's not true. I've got my own mind. I don't think yeh eat babies on toast for breakfast nor do I think Uncle Tom was a saint. But I. Don't. Care. To me, yeh took away the only father I ever knew and put yerself in his place. That's why I don't like yeh." She backed off, shaking her head. "I have to go to my voice lesson." It wasn't for another hour but Terry wanted to get away before she did something stupid like started to cry.
"I was nothing to do with his getting arrested. I'd have done the same, sure, but the first I knew of it was when the officers called me to tell me about yeh." Sean shook his head in disbelief. "But go on to your lesson. I'm sure I'll see yeh around here." He turned and took to the air again, looking for Cain, and the tools to fix the damage to the grounds, and a fruitless attempt to work out some frustration.
