I think I had a little too much fun with this. I'm addicted to my sock, so if anybody wants to meet her, let me know. X)

Anyway. Saturday afternoon, Shinobi goes along with Jamie and co. to the meet-and-greet with the open-minded folk. One of said open-minded folk gets to take center stage, because damnit, I felt like writing a girl. Behold!

"I can't believe I let you talk me into this, Lisa," Bethany Moore asided quietly to her friend from where she sat, slouched comfortably in the booth they were sharing inside the coffee shop. "You are so buying all my mochas."

She was vehemently not one of the ballet crowd, no matter how much her parents might have wanted her to be. No sir. Bethany Moore was no dancer - she was a skateboarder. Much more difficult than that sissy dancing crap, despite her friend's arguements to the contrary. Beth was a little over five and a half feet tall and freshly seventeen years old, with a body that reflected her chosen active lifestyle, and she completely hid it underneath comfortable, baggy clothing. Today, it was a pair of olive cargo pants held about her waist with a belt that had seen better days and her usual ratty pair of Vans, with a black t-shirt bearing stripes across the sleeves and "DEEP 13" over the chest in lime green. Her jacket wasn't hung up at the door with the others, and instead, it was tied around her waist by the sleeves. Her shoulder-length black hair was in its usual state of feathery disarray, but she'd hidden it beneath a Boston Celtics baseball cap for the occasion. As for makeup.. what's that? That itchy crap? No thank you.

Lisa eyed her with a fond sort of exasperation. "I thought I asked you to dress up for this, Beth."

"I did."

"You wore that yesterday!"

"Oh, shut up."

To Bethany's surprise, Lisa did shut up - but only because she was now watching the door with rather rapt attention. "Kitty's boyfriend's here.. oh my God.. Bethany.. look."

"What?"

"Look!"

"What?!" With a roll of her eyes, she dutifully twisted around in her seat so she could look towards the entering group - and blinked, twice, as she saw who her friend was staring at. A tall asian boy was coming inside on Jamie's heels, with a leather jacket on over jeans and a snug t-shirt. "Is that Shinobi Shaw?" she whispered, eyes widening, before she gave herself a firm shake and made a show of slouching back into her seat with a grumble. "Hmp. Big deal."

Lisa, obviously, did not think Bethany had a career in acting in her future. "Uh-huh."

"Shut up."

The next fifteen minutes or so went by in something of a semi-awkward blur, as slightly nervous humans and slightly nervous mutants all got themselves settled and caffeinated. Jamie seemed like he was already operating on far too many espressos, but maybe she was just imagining things.. she wasn't really paying much attention to him, after all.

The introductions had confirmed it. That was Shinobi Shaw. But why was he here?

Well. May as well ask him.

Scooping up her mocha, Bethany steeled herself (He's nobody special, no matter how many stupid magazines he's sold.) and crossed over to his table, plunking down in the seat across from him. People seemed to be pairing up anyway - it was the perfect cover. Not that she needed one, of course.

Shinobi looked up mid-sip from his own coffee, blinking once before he lowered his cup with a friendly grin. "You're.. Bethany, right?"

"Beth," she corrected quickly, giving him a careful looking over. Ignore the siren song of an English accent, Bethany. Be strong. "But yeah. Hi."

He nodded once, keeping his grin. "Beth it is, then. Hi. You a friend of Kitty's, or..?"

"Oh, no," Bethany blinked, shaking her head. "I mean, I know her, but she's just kind of acquaintance-y, you know? Ballet's not my scene."

"I hadn't guessed."

"Shut up. ...um. I-I didn't mean that..." She just told Shinobi Shaw to shut up. Ohhh crap oh crap oh crap..

His grin only broadened. "No, no, it's okay. I deserved that. Don't worry about it." He waved a hand dismissively, and as Bethany sagged in relief, gave her a curious look. "So.. what is your scene, then?"

"Skateboarding," she replied simply, lifting her shoulders in a shrug. "My brother got me into it. It's fun."

"I'd be into it, if my balance was slightly less atrocious. Tried it once years ago, intimately introduced my face to a brick wall. Not so fun."

She grimaced in sympathy. "I've done that." She hesitated a moment before tentatively voicing, "But couldn't you have just.. blown the wall up or something? So you didn't hit it?"

"Huh? Oh, no, I'm a mutant of the non-explodey variety."

"You don't look like a mutant."

"Neither does Jamie."

"Point."

There was a moment of comfortable silence as they each took a sip of their respective drinks, before Bethany spoke up again, peering at him curiously. "So what is your thing, if it isn't of the explodey variety?"

"It's of the skip-out-of-a-grounding variety," he replied after a moment's thought, glancing around before he waggled his fingers at them, then lowered them to the tabletop - and let them pass through it.

She blinked twice, slowly tilting her head and reaching over to poke experimentally at the place where his hand had been. "...cool." What was going on? She wasn't actually jealous of this guy, was she?

Well. Maybe just a little.

"Isn't it, though? Goes the other way, too, to where things can't go through me. Density manipulation, basically, if that makes sense.. I'm probably the only guy you'll ever meet who can honestly say he's never cut himself shaving."

"Handy," Bethany grinned, looking back up with a sage nod. "It doesn't hurt or anything?"

He shook his head, running a hand back through his hair, and she could tell from the vibrancy that the red dye had very recently been freshened up. "Nah, doesn't hurt. Just as natural as walking down the street, once I learned how to do it."

She looked surprised, and her tone of voice certainly matched. "You had to learn?"

"Well, yeah," Shinobi blinked. "You had to learn to walk and talk, didn't you?"

She gave him an odd look, arching an eyebrow. "Well, duh."

He smiled patiently, inclining his head. "Same thing."

"Yeah," Bethany agreed, glancing down at her mocha with a thoughtful expression. "I guess it is the same thing. Never really thought about it like that."

"I know. That's why we're here."

Eeee! Sockpuppet!human skateboarder. Great log. :D

The 'siren call' accent made me picture Shinobi as a mermaid, though, which I think was somewhat traumatising.

She borrows Lisa's copies on the sly?

Y'know, I can't wait for all the tabloid speculation about Shinobi Shaw's Mysterious Girlfriend. Has he been out in public with Sarah yet? :D

hahahaha.. oh christ. They did go out to get his eyebrow pierced if I remember correctly...

Actually I can't wait for somebody to ask if he's single.

"So... is he?"
"You don't want to go there. His girlfriend, she'll cut you into tiny pieces for fun."

Heh. She's probably got Internet hate sites devoted to her already.

Er, specific ones. :) Probably with blinking marquee text and the color sense of a blind walnut.
