It takes just as long for the Blackbird to get back from Derbent as it did for it to get there. That much time to think, in a situation like this, is both good and bad.

Waking up in Russian custody, Nathan and Haller find themselves unable to answer some fairly tough questions. Thankfully, they find themselves the beneficiaries of a rather unexpected save.

( Dear Journal: Today a whackjob telekinetic tore up half a city, Magneto hit me with a pipe and Nathan got himself smacked by twitchy military personnel. It was the very best vacation ever . . . )

Nathan and Saidullayev go head-to-head. Haller covers the evacuation, but both inner and outer forces demand that he take on a more active role. Cooperation turns out to be a beautiful thing, but sometimes the fight doesn't end when it should.

Nathan, Haller, and Gabrielle meet with the heads of the DDR program. All is going very well. Until the city starts blowing up. It's a toss-up as to what's more disturbing: the identity of the person causing the explosions, the fact that backup is twelve hours away, or the other unexpected familiar face who shows up to watch the fireworks.
