During a lull in his monitoring duties, Nathan stops in at the office to catch up on some work. Angelo, who's holding the fort, gives him an official-looking piece of mail - from Saul's lawyers, in San Francisco. It turns out that Nathan's father had one last surprise for him.

... this is insane. )

Nathan and Jim are in the city taking in some culture when Saul shows up unexpectedly. (Yes, Nathan will be getting scanned for a microchip as soon as they get back to the mansion.) Surprisingly, Saul's there with the best of intentions. Really. Unfortunately, that doesn't actually help. Nate and Jim both get a little frayed around the edges in their own unique ways, and Jim gets to do something that a large portion of the mansion has probably been wanting to do for the better part of a year. Go Jim!

How does he find me? )

Angelo attends a conference that Gideon is also at, and they have a surprisingly pleasant conversation.

Tell me, Angelo, would someone like that be interested in the well-being of starving African children? )

Following the meeting, he returns to the mansion and reports to Nathan, with confusion from them both and alarm from Nathan.

...hey, Nathan. Yeah, uh... guess who was at the conference? )

A little later in the evening, Nathan is still spending quality time with some of Moira's favorite machines. Angelo stops in to check on his boss, and Nathan tells him a little bit about what he saw - and is still seeing. It's not reassuring. Everyone else should be reassured that they don't have powers that provide their own foreshadowing.

The precog apparently decided to play 'let's kick Nathan in the brain'. )

When Nathan and Rachel go to take a look at the fish in the pet store, Moira goes shopping by herself. Unfortunately, her luck is proving rotten enough for her to have an 'unexpected' family reunion with one of the last men she wanted to have it with. After the verbal sparring and a warning from her, she goes to retrieve and get her family out of the mall as soon as possible.

Your husband has been in this 'mess' from the day he was born. So has your daughter. )

After exchanging those brief and rather snarky emails with his father, Nathan decides to take Rachel out for some fresh air. They wind up at the boathouse, where Nathan and Cain talk about Saul, the sudden prevalence of weird viruses around the mansion, and the latest developments in Cain's search for Cameron Hodge. Also, Rachel charms a bird and convinces Cain that she's bent on world domination.

I think Uncle Cain thinks you're a scary little girl who might be cherishing homicidal thoughts. He needs to hold that thought until you're two, doesn't he? )

After a fruitless meeting over coffee with the person he'd hoped would be able to answer some of his questions about his 'Kashmir mystery', a frustrated Nathan heads back to his car, where he gets a call on his cell from his uncle. When the stakes are high enough, even stupid risks seem acceptable, and, not unexpectedly, Gideon knows just how to appeal to Nathan's reckless side.

Don't say I never gave you a gift, mmm? )

After pulling himself together in the wake of the weekend's revelations, Nathan starts to think about what should be done now. He has some ideas. Charles, as always, facilitates.

Near sunset. Nathan heads off for the flyer's platform to seek a moment of solitude, only to discover that it is already occupied by Alison, who is working hard on her meditation these days. An attempt at scurrying off is countered by the proper application of a running shoe.

You threw a shoe at me. )

Haroun catches GW before he heads back into New York. They talk about Nathan, about Haroun's parents, and about parades.

Have ourselves a little Kill Whitey parade or something. )

Sunday afternoon, Nathan runs into Haroun, who hasn't glanced at the team board yet today. Haroun's response to the news is not altogether unexpected, but it doesn't meet with much enthusiasm from Nathan's direction.

Between who you are and who you could be )

A little later, Jean follows up on her decision from last night and comes upstairs to check on Nathan. She is horrified to find out what happens, but manages to master the homicidal urges and offers a few words of wisdom.

Ignorant of what's going on thanks to some very determined shielding on Nathan's part, Moira is alerted by Bridge. After being helped back upstairs to her severely distraught husband, she focuses on reassuring him, but may or may not also be considering getting one of her hunting rifles and tracking down her father-in-law.

I'll just punch the wall for now. )

Nathan reaches out to the closest mind he can trust for help. He doesn't have to reach all the way to the mansion.

For there are deeds which have no form, sufferings which have no tongue. -Shelley )

Bridge gets Nathan back to the mansion. At first, Nathan makes a beeline for the Box, but then manages to pull himself together. Madelyn finishes the first-aid job Bridge started and is the first at the mansion to find out what happened. Symmetry isn't always such a wonderful thing.

Nathan, still somewhat euphoric, heads into New York to meet his father for lunch and show off baby pictures. That is, after all, the sort of thing that new fathers do. Saul is very appreciative. Then the third and unexpected member of their party arrives, and Nathan is introduced.

To his Uncle Gideon.

Things go downhill from there.

Left with some quiet time to himself while Moira's busy with her patient, Nathan is sitting out enjoying the view when his precognition decides to give him a good kick in the head. There are a couple of recurring themes, and one very nasty surprise.

Fires that shook me once, but now to silent ashes fall'n away. )

Nathan meets his father for lunch in New York. This is not something he's really been looking forward to, given that recent events have left him understandably suspicious of his father. He proceeds to do a terrible job hiding it, then gives in to tempation - on several levels. He also makes his father very happy.

Don't play the ingenue with me, Nathan. You were raised better than that. )

After the last in a series of chess games, Nathan and Domino talk about her weekend plans, and manage to not-quite-talk about the subject that's really bothering her. Then Nathan is saved by the bell - except that the person on the other end of the cell phone is Saul, and Nathan finds out that GW did not, in fact, pass along that particular piece of news to Domino while she was in the Sudan. Whoops.

This is what happens when you leave. I get all rusty at chess. )

After returning from Philadelphia, Nathan briefs the team leaders on what happened. A briefing given by an agitated precognitive in psionic shock is not the most helpful thing in the world, but can be revealing, even so.

There was the door to which I found no key; there was the veil through which I might not see. )

After getting some more than vaguely unsettling news from Jake about some of his father's business ties, Nathan asks Remy to help him break into the offices of one of his father's company's major investors. They don't find any answers about Saul, but they do find a whole new set of questions. And someone unexpected finds them.

The future arrives too soon and in the wrong order. )
