Who: Jubilation Lee, Catseye
When: Backdated to Tuesday 14th June 2005 Time: 8:20pm
What Happens: Jubilee talks to Catseye on the beach the night after they take a look around the mall in which she spent a great deal of time before coming to Xavier's. It wasn't the place Jubilee remembers, and she makes a decision.
Song lyrics in LJ cut: 'Gabriel' by Luka Bloom

Jubilee sat on the small brick wall that separated the footpath above from the sand below. It was a full moon tonight; appropriate considering the first night she'd ever been here had been one too. As much as things seemed the same however, there was a lot that was different, just under the surface where it didn't always show. She wasn't entirely sure yet what to do about those changes, only that things had done so.

The faintest crunch of sand was the only warning she got because a cat's tail tickled her legs, Catseye merrily winding about as she padded by, a small crab neatly caught at the tip of her tail. Eyes bright, she hopped on top of the wall and curved her tail around herself to dangle the crab a few inches from her nose, ignoring the threatening snaps of one pincer, the other neatly clinging to a tuft of tail.

Jubilee giggled as she watched Catseye play, and then put a hand over her mouth to muffle it slightly as it seemed to echo in the silence. "You like the beach then, Cat? I stayed here once, ya know. Back when I didn't have a home."

"Mrrr?" This was talking without needing a reply talk, which Catseye knew only too well how to recognize. People tended to talk that way to cats more often than not, after all. Dangling the little creature from her tail absently, she flicked an ear in Jubilee's direction to show she was giving the talk due attention.

"It was after I finally got fed up with the places the Foster care people were puttin' me. Just hightailed it from San Fran to here an realised I hadn't planned it too great. Those first few days, had no idea what I was doin', nowhere to stay and my money was startin' to run out. Knew if I didn't find some place and soon that, well, you know. That's when I found out I could hide out in the mall. Hadn't been game to try it before, cause of the rent a cops. First night I was so damn scared I'd get caught. But they weren't lookin' for a kid, ya know? An they weren't exactly well paid to be vigilant. I thought I'd died an gone ta heaven. No adults to boss me around; mostly warm place to stay. Food wasn't exactly growin' on trees but you could usually swipe somethin' from the food court. People were always leavin' their food half eaten." Jubilee continued, dangling a toe in the sand, idly doodling.

Nodding wisely, the cat had to agree. She'd done that at times herself during the harshest times of winter or during heavy rains, when making it back to her usual haunts had been problematic. With a flick of her tail she sent the crab tumbling towards Jubilee, the creature landing in the sand with a scrabble before turning to face them both, pincers waving defiantly in the air as though daring them to try anything at all.

Jubilee looked down at the small crab, smiling as she reached out a foot and let it snap a pincer on the toe of her sneaker. It was a determined little thing, attacking a creature so much larger then itself. It reminded her suddenly of the mansion and how no matter what was sent against them, they'd always managed to pull through. Seeing where she'd been, it made her think more about where she was now, and where she wanted to go.

"It's not paradise, the mall, not like I thought it was. It's just a place, four walls and a roof. There's nothing, there's no family here, ya know? There's no one I remember, and all that's left is some old building about to be torn down. Everything I know now is back in Salem Centre. The mansion, the teachers and the kids. They're my home, I made the choice that it would be and now I want to protect that, ya know? I want to make sure nothin’ happens to it. Don't know why I had to come all this way just ta realise that." Jubilee said, careful not to hurt the creature clinging to her shoe.

A hand stretched into her field of vision, a claw tipped finger very lightly tapping her cheek, before withdrawing. Once she had the girl's attention, Catseye offered her a small smile. "Catseye knows... exactly what BrightSparksGirl means." Her tail curled about around her legs, perched as she was on the wall, and she didn't change back just yet, content to wait a bit longer to see if Jubilee had anything else to say.

Jubilee smiled at Catseye, meeting her eyes for a second before turning back to the sea. She'd gotten so used to Catseye's cat form that seeing her human form was still a little surprising. "Does it get easier, do you think? Seems like half the time I've got no idea what I'm doing and the other half, I do but I can't do a damn thing anyway. It's hard just sitting by and letting things happen, even if it's the best possible thing you can do."

"Catseye does not think that far ahead." Starting to do a full body stretch she paused in mid-motion, tail flicking out to restore her balance - full length six feet tall humans did not manage balancing on a wall the way a cat would, she was reminded. And thankfully did not fall flat on her face this time. "Catseye deals with things as they happen and that is that. Those are the things that need to be done. Or not, sometimes." A small, minute shrug followed, echoed down her spine, unsatisfactorily so. A cat shrug was so much better. "No one can do everything."

It made sense to Jubilee then, she could suddenly see why Catseye reacted the way she did at times. It was that very notion of thinking in the moment, reacting in that moment and letting the future take care of itself. It wasn't something Jubilee herself could do, as she'd learnt to her pain that reacting in the moment most often then not led to disastrous consequences.

Still, she was right about no one being able to do everything. "No, no one can, although some people do try. Not sure if that's a trust thing or an arrogance thing, maybe both. Maybe it's just, a human thing, ya know? We all try an do more then anyone could ever possibly do because we can't imagine it all getting done without us."

Lips curling just a bit, Catseye still stared ahead. "Cats are not the only ones to think it's all about them. Sometimes." The last word was added as an afterthought, and accompanied by another of those full body shrugs. "Catseye thinks things get done, whether we want them to or not. So long as Catseye tried when it felt right, that's all that matters."

Jubilee smiled. "S'all that counts, ain't it? Doing what you think is right. It's what I've always tried to do. S'what I'm going to do when I get back. Get more involved with training, try and make it as an X-man. Protect the things and people I believe in. S'all that counts in the end."

It's what she'd finally come to, after all the thinking and staring out at the sea. But she'd already made that decision some months ago, it had just taken till now to realise why she was really doing it. It was a relief, to know it was the right thing.

"Mrrr." People thought too much, sometimes - it was an annoying thing in its contagiousness, and Catseye decided that it had been going on long enough this time. With a small sound she leapt off the wall after the crab, thankfully remembering to shift from girl to cat in the process. The crab started running about in circles, Catseye gleefully in pursuit, stopping only long enough to hop away each time a threatening claw was waved in her direction.
