Wednesday evening. Kitty gets out of class and has more admirers than she thinks.
"Hey, Pryde, wait up!"
Startled by the cry, Kitty stopped at the bottom of the stairs, peering up into the glare of the entrance lights. Seemed like night was coming and they were coming on earlier and earlier. Which, given it was October, was not actually wrong. "Oh, hey Todd," she said when she finally figured out who'd been yelling at her. One of the less obnoxious physics majors, at least he didn't make her feel like it was a crime to be clever. "What's up?"
"You busy?" Todd asked, hurrying down the stairs.
Checking her watch, Kitty shrugged. "Not just now. I've got another half hour till Jamie's out of class."
"The boy who was sitting class for you last month? What is he, your boyfriend?" His tone rather suggested he hoped the answer was 'no'.
Kitty grinned. "Actually, yes. Just over two years now. We went to high school together."
"Oh." Todd's smile wavered slightly, but was quickly restored. "Well, he seemed like a nice guy. Never did tell me what he was doing about his classes while he was covering yours, but whatever. Any rate," he added quickly, "was wondering if you could explain what Parker was going on about? Isn't the TA supposed to make the prof's lectures less confusing?"
Kitty laughed. "Pete's not so bad. You just have to learn when what he's saying is relevant and when it's completely off topic. The boy has no focus. But sure, I've got time. Coffee house?"
Todd nodded. "Sure, sounds good. My treat."
---
They were too far away for his his preternatural senses to make out though the way the young man hovered over the girl made him hiss in dismay. She was destined to be his and he would permit no interference from such a would-be suitor. Gliding steathily from shadow to shadow, wrapping the darkness about him like a cloak, the night in sympathy with his cause, he closed upon the couple. If he could just separate her from the boy-child then she would surely come to him willingly. It was his right and his due. She was to be his.
The coffee house was loud and boisterous and more than a few strange looks were directed his way. He hissed at a table full of girls when they giggled and decided to try again another night. He could be patient. The rewards would be well worth it.
