Where Alex was while Alison and Lorna were not talking
"Okay." Repeating the word was enough and Alison let silence take over after that, not releasing her hold on Lorna's hand once.
Alex had heard who was at the door at the same time as Lorna, but had stayed put on the bed where they had been tangled together, him reading to her softly. He watched her go, swallowing down the rush of protectiveness and longing. He missed her before she was out of the bedroom door, having been spoiled by their constant nearness.
Sighing, he kept an ear bent toward the living room, attempting to continue where he left off in the book. Hushed voices reached him for only a few moments, until silence reigned. He’d read the same sentence over and over, as he strained his hearing.
Curious, as he had not heard the front door open nor anymore voices, Alex marked his place in the book with a finger and held it in his hand as he got off the bed. Shuffling in bare feet, he walked over to the bedroom door, stopping there at the sight before him, which caused a small, relieved smile.
After watching them in their silent grief for a few moments, he quietly returned to the bed, getting comfortable as he found the place he had stopped reading, his full concentration on the page.
