It was 80 degrees and beautiful in Hawaii. The air smelled, as it always did, of flowers and sea, salty and sweet in equal measure, so rich Lorna could taste it. Her heavy jacket was draped over her bag, evidence of the whole world away from this tropical paradise. She hadn't bothered renting a car, just caught a shuttle back to campus and walked to the apartment from there.
The sun was setting by the time she was walking along the beach, surf kicking up around her ankles, the wind catching her sundress and flattening it against her. She smiled absently at a small child staring open-mouthed at her hair. She had left her hair uncovered deliberately--the point was to be obvious after all. A deep breath steadied her against the nearly crippling fear. She dropped her shields.
The disturbance was easy to sense, she hardly needed to have been here, a decent piece of equipment could have told the same thing. Nevertheless, Lorna chased it obediently back to its source and marked it. The sun had vanished from the sky when she pulled her cell phone out and dialed.
"Cyclops? I've got something here you'll want to check out." Oh so innocent. She didn't have to fake the worry, at least. "Yes, you'll need the team. Yes. Good night." She closed her phone.
