As he does every day, Shiro checks up on news in Japan. But he's not expecting today's headline.
Shiro yawned and threw his book bag down on his bed, taking a seat at his desk. Too much damn homework right after spring break. And still more to do. His portfolio would have to wait, though, because it's morning in Japan and that means time to check the news. Once his computer booted up, he opened Firefox, stifled another yawn, and clicked the Daily Yomiuri Online icon on his personal toolbar.
The yawn turned into a violent cough when he read the headline: METI Official Found Murdered, Brutalized.
Shiro leaned in and gasped as he read the article. Katori Shinji, Deputy Director-General of the Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, was found murdered in his home this morning. Police reports indicate an armed robbery gone horribly wrong, although no witnesses can be found to validate this claim. Sources also suggest that Katori was tortured before his death, and the shape of a hand was carved into his chest.
Tokyo chief of police Tomoe Suichi issued . . .
He couldn't read any more. Shiro knew Katori, quite well in fact. He was very close to Harada, always working to make it easy for big business to grow even bigger. Shiro couldn't remember even one business affair where Katori wasn't present.
The government was already trying to cover up the truth, he could see. Armed robbery? Hardly. The impromptu body art suggested something quite different: Tsurayaba Matsu'o, chief of The Hand.
Amaterasu only knew how the Silver Samurai would respond. That thought sent violent chills down Shiro's spine.
